Deadpool has amazed fans this winter with his 'not to be taken seriously' bout of superhero action that saw the merc with a mouth team up with the X-Men's Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead to rescue his girlfriend from the douche-bag that gave him his powers. The movie industry has reacted as expected with the knee jerk reaction that fans will want more R-rated superhero movies, rather than learning the true lesson from Deadpools success; that if a movie is crafted with love and devotion rather than to increase profits, success is almost assured. To see this in practice you only have to look at James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy, Jon Favreau and Iron Man, Christopher Nolan and Batman. Movies such as the last attempt at the Fantastic Four, Superman Returns and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, each produced to captilize upon the success of previous successes only further prove the point.

While Deadpool could easily continue within his own franchise as a lone anti-hero, much like the Punisher or Riddick, the characters comedic tendencies and warped outlook beg for him to be teamed with a suitable partner, one with a more serious perspective and rule abiding manner. In the comic books from which Deadpool was born the character has often been paired with the future offspring of the X-Men's Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor (a clone of Jean Grey); Nathan Summers better known as Cable. Cable is, unsurprisingly, a powerful mutant whom travels through time in an effort to change the world for the better.

In a post credits scene Deadpool states that Cable will appear in the movies sequel, but unfortunately does not elaborate whom will star opposite star Ryan Reynolds in the eagerly awaited sequel. Some actors have already made known their interest in the role, while others are being speculated upon by fans. Here is our list of the top five actors whom we believe are most likely to be in contention for the role...

#5 Jeffrey Dean Morgan

The star of US TV shows Supernatural, The Good Wife and The Walking Dead last appeared as a comic book character in 2009's Watchmen. American actor Morgan, whom will also appear as Thomas Wayne in a flashback sequence in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a firm fan favorite for the role, but is the least likely to get the role due to his current commitments.

#4 Michael Biehn

Legendary science fiction actor Michael Beihn is best known for his roles in movies such as The Terminator, Aliens, Navy SEALS and the Rock. Like Morgan above Biehn is a common favorite for the role among fans.

#3 Liam Neeson

Although at the moment Neeson is enjoying playing a run of revenge action movies, the Irish actor is no stranger to larger than life roles having played Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jin, Zeus, Hannibal Smith (A-Team) and of course Darkman in the 1990 movie of the same name.

#2 Dolph Lundgren

The Swedish action movie legend has portrayed many heroes and villains on the big screen throughout his long career including The Punisher, He-Man, Universal Soldier Scott Andrews, Russian boxer Ivan Drago and many, many more. The Expendables star recently posted on Facebook (pictured above) that he was interested in the role.

#1 Stephen Lang

After doing a turn as a villain in Avatar as Col. Miles Quaritch and appearing in the US TV series Terra Nova as Commander Nathaniel Taylor, American actor Stephen Lang has proven his range when portraying hardened military characters. Lang was also the first actor to express his interest in playing the role of Cable in a Deadpool sequel, tweeting his desire for the role soon after the movie was released in theaters.

Other actors that have been mentioned in relation to the role, either by themselves or by their fans are – Jon Hamm, Ray Stevenson, Jean Claude Van Damme, Ron Perlman, Mel Gibson, George Clooney, Kurt Russell, Clancy Brown, Kevin Nash, Adam Baldwin and WWE wrestler Triple H.
