Roberto Orci has worked with long collaborator Alex Kurtzman as co-writer and co-producer on some of the most popular science fiction, comic book and action adventure movies for the past 10 years including - Transformers and its sequel Revenge of the Fallen, Cowboys & Aliens, and of course the 2009's Star Trek and last years epic Star Trek: Into Darkness.
After the monumental performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan in the last instalment a third movie is a given, and is planned to be released in 2016. However J.J. Abrams, director of the previous two instalments will not be returning as director, but as a producer due to his new commitment to 20th Century Fox's forthcoming and eagerly anticipated Star Wars Episode VII, of which has already entered production.
Furthermore Roberto Orci's long term co-writer/co-producer Alex Kurtzman will not be returniing for the third Star Trek movie, due to his commitment to Sony's planned Venom movie, of which Kurtzman will co-write with Orci and direct.
Although Roberto Orci will write the third Star Trek movie with co-writers Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, Variety reports that Orci is also hoping to direct the movie. Reportedly Abrams' Bad Robot Productions and David Ellison's Skydance Productions are confident in Orci's capability to direct the movie but, considering the sequel would be Orci's directorial debut, studio Paramount Pictures are unsurprisingly cautious.
