Spider-Mans origin story is pretty much common knowledge thanks to both Sam Raimi's and Marc Webb's movie adaptations of the event - Peter Parker, out on a school trip is bitten by a radioactive/genetically engineered spider, giving him the ability to pre-empt imminent danger, climb walls and ceilings, and have the proportionate strength and agility of a spider. Now, in a very daring move Marvel Comics are retconnning Spider-Mans origin story, but the changes have nothing to do with Peter Parker, well not directly...
What if Peter Parker wasn't the only person bitten by the radioactive/genetically engineered spider? This very question is the driving force behind the retconning of Spider-Mans origin story, and the introduction of new character Silk.
This new character has reportedly been in development for years and looks set to join characters like Venom and Carnage, as a fan favorite once the character is fully unveiled to us in issue 4 of the Amazing Spider-Man. Marvels Senior Editor Nick Lowe elaborated further on the new character recently to Newsarama...
“Silk is going to be a major Spider… character over the next couple years. She got bit by the same spider that Peter Parker did and we’re starting to tease her story in every issue of Amazing Spider-Man.”
“The story about Silk was something that Dan Slott started working on with former Spidey-Editor Steve Wacker and Associate Editor Ellie Pyle when the Original Sin event was in its formative time. The revelation that someone else was bit by the spider was huge and before my time. I’ve been involved in shaping who Silk is, which has made for some great lunch conversation with Dan and Ellie and many long phone calls. “
“Silk’s powers and look is very influenced in webs. Humberto Ramos did some incredible design work on Silk. I can’t wait to show it all off!”
