There's a Road on this Alien Planet... ?

Just looking at the teaser screen caps again.. and looking through old threads and I don't think many have thought about this. In the screen caps/trailer when the Prometheus lands.. there is an evident road cut out on the planet's surface... See what I mean: Now, I don't recall seeing any dozers on board the Prometheus, but how odd is it that on an "Alien" planet, we have a convenient path laid out for the crew's land rovers to take a trip on. It's not a major debate topic, but just a curious observation I decided to note. Care to offer ideas?

These sick puppies probably laid the "road" out to lure visitors into the temple. Then again, who knows. Have you read the leaked script? Maybe some clues there

Well BH, it could be an old river bed that is all dried up. But the sides of the "road" look like it was plowed. I have no idea how they were made. On a separate note, I haven't really heard anyone ask the question, why is the SJ on that planet? As a Weyland/Yutani executive put it, "its a rock, no indigenes life". What was the SJ doing there. Maybe he/they were studying something and made all the roads to get around. Of coarse that would mean that is LV426, we still don't know if it is or not. Sorry a little off topic.

Funny, I was just going over the same thing... The road looks pretty long.. Ship/Road

Well if there is a temple, that might explain the reason for the SJ to be there. Maybe its not a temple, it could be a lab for them.

Well, it is said that the leaked script is a Fake (which is very likely) but according to this script the artificial roads are the equivalent of the Nazca lines.

Apparently its function is to minimize risk when driving on the ground hostile to the ruins, as the planet's terrain is full of razor sharp rocks.

Shambhala, Funny how the size of the roads are the same size as the "cargo bay".. lol.... The "Prometheus" is makeing them for some reason.. I'm doing some research, (going back and reading "Red Mars"), so see if I can find anything interesting... Thanks @ danrald, lol I think the roads had a more reasonable and plausible explanation as you say. Totally agree with you. regards

Shambhala, Well had I not seen that picture.. I would have gone with Nazca lines.. lol...

danrald lol, yeah, i had overlooked that detail. I get carried away by the enthusiasm of the news. My apologies for that XP

This has probably been mentioned before, but there appears to be some forms drawn to the ground too: Picture from 1st trailer The markings appear somewhat part of a greater circle, and on the right side of the road there is also some triangular form too. We'll probably see little more of these in Saturdays trailer.

I have a explanation for the road. The Prometheus used a energy weapon to vaporize the rocks in order to make the flat and precise level road when it was hovering coming in for a landing. In fact they had no choice so their land rover vehicles could maneuver instead of going over the Tuff Rock formations damaging them. Yes I am a geologist and those pointy rocks sticking up everywhere are Tuff and Pumice rock formations created by hot pyroclastic volcanic flows from tens of millions of years ago.

@Shilliam Watner I love your theory! It also gives subtle support for little debate on ship-to-ship combat thread. Most of all, it's pretty logical theory you represent. Also, your name is full of win.

@Ghorgul Thanks. Ridley did his homework when it came to the geology of the planets surface. I noticed right off the bat. By looking at the current formations of Tuff and Pumice, there was a huge explosive volcanic eruption millions of years ago and the reason they are pointed is from erosion, both wind and water. Any questions I would be happy to answer pertaining to the formations. The road is fine dust so that means they used a energy beam that would have pulverized the ground into fine dust. The cooling would take place immediate just like lava flows.

No... not human made... What is more plausible, the crew bringing a high energy weapon for no other reason than to make a road... or the road made by the ones that built the "temple". The rovers should be able to navigate outside the road, bringing a vehicle not able to navigate different terrains, would be stupid on such a mission.

i think are human made and made by the crew ...it really start too much precisely from the hangar door . Its not possible that they land on an alien planet and they sit perfectly upon a line/road . Plus the road is a bit too "dirt" compared to the elaborated/mechanical decorations of the "temple"

If you notice in the new preview trailer scene as the dust storm is approaching the ship (extreme long shot), the road continues beyond the Prometheus. Therefore, I'd have to say that it was already there. It's a common tradition among civilizations to connect important spiritual(?) sites with roads (or lines). IMO it was already there. They see it on their approach, (maybe they see others too?), and decide to take advantage of it. It obviously leads to somewhere important and they are simply "keeping a safe minimum distance" from there destination. The fact that it's approx. the size of their cargo bay is a happy accident. Let's face it, why make the road 5 times wider than they had to? Do you realize how much of Weyland's energy they'd need to blast that sucker so far? Vickers would not be pleased.

True db, besides, being as wide as the cargo bay does not prove anything. It is a waste of energy making a road 10(+) times the width of the largest vehicle using it.

Especially when it goes off in both directions... for a very long way. We'll assume it leads somewhere, and that's why they're using it... yes? (Ash voice).

It could be that additional roads radiate out from the temple like spokes projecting from a hub. Seems like the road(s) would not have been manmade. Assuming the humans created the road with their ship, would they have used some sort of high-energy beam? Wouldn't that result in glass particles (from superheating) on the ground rather than the dirt we see kicked up by the vehices? Can someone with more expertise shed some light?

Hey Sparty, I get where you're coming from, but I may be able to justify this particular discussion based on the fact that: A. BH started it... (and it's really his playground, right?) . B. With the release of the new "preview to the trailer", we can see that the previously thought of "man-made" road actually stretches beyond the Prometheus and therefore was probably already there when they landed and the crew is just taking advantage of using it to get to their target destination. Make sense? Which brings me to my road-based question: Why does an alien race need roads? Do they use land-based vehicles too? How bad-ass would a Giger-inspired SJ driven Hummer look?

Would SJs have land-based transportation? Why not just smaller flying craft so you don't even have to touch the ground? The purpose for these roads is puzzling, indeed. In space, no one can hear you scream when a tire blows out.

I like the idea that it could be Nasca line type formations.
