And he's a very tough critic!
"Prometheus" is a magnificent science-fiction film, all the more intriguing because it raises questions about the origin of human life and doesn't have the answers. It's in the classic tradition of golden age sci-fi, echoing Scott's "Alien" (1979), but creating a world of its own. I'm a pushover for material like this; it's a seamless blend of story, special effects and pitch-perfect casting, filmed in sane, effective 3-D that doesn't distract.
My Lord, based on this alone half the posters here who registered this past week should bee immediately BANNED for deliberately being disruptive ! !!! This man just does NOT LIKE science Fiction AT ALL and look what he said!

Seriously Spartacus, have a word will you. So you listen to people tell you things are good, and take it as just that? Go see it and make your OWN mind up. I expect your hyperactive self convincing Saturday. The denial if you don't like it will be impossible to contain. "I'm a pushover for material like this"... Science-fiction...

Where'd you get the idea he doesn't like Science Fiction? I've seen him give some great reviews to science fiction movies over the years.

He must have seen a different Prometheus than the rest of the world saw. BTW... This is like the 5th time you guys have posted his review, just because you post this same review over and over, doesn't make the movie any more better to those of us who see it for what it is... a total let down ;)

I really do think all these negative reviews and thoughts on Prometheus are coming from an anti-lost brigade of people and fan boys who were expecting a new ALIEN or ALIENS ... it has been stated all alone along by RS et al , this was the start of a new Mythology ... and he has achieved what he intended ... of course there are plot holes ,,, there is going to be a PROM 2 and 3 ... if you had have just read Lord of the Rings or watched the first movie .. you would be LOST !!! without the next two installments of the franchise ... this is what has happened with PROMETHEUS ... it is the start of more to come .. Guys, you should be looking at this as a new movie and forget what you know from the past ... all the decent reviews are coming from highly regarded critics, unbiased by pre thought , Mark Kamode for example watched PROMETHEUS without prejudice or judgement by not picking up any of the pre-film buzz and watching trailers etc ... then he judged the movie on it's own merits .. result .. 7.5 out of 10 ... Now another review pops up from a respected critic and you pan it , he must be paid blah blah ... Grow up and go watch it again .. I did that ... and loved it , the score is fantastic second time around .. and more much more .. and as for the story , it is all there and perfectly well explained .. and i got that the first time .. i have no idea where this confusion comes from ... The movie is shot aesthetically well , with an incredible use of modern 3D film making ... it looks sumptious ... the staging is perfect ! the story is fantastic ... and fits in perfectly well within the ALIEN universe ... the Engineers and the Monsters on show .. look really unique and quite scary ... I loved the Engineers in particular .. They really are quite dead-pan .. and look Greek Gods made out of marble ... for me they are PROMETHEUS ... but not gonna split hairs here ... and guys , it is bloody movie ... it's not real life ... it's not real ... shouting about plot holes and stuff is just plain rediculous ... when you are arguing the toss about , spaceships, terraforming, movie-monsters , androids .. you know it's not real ... it is only a movie ... now keep repeating to yourself , it is only a movie, only a movie ... off to watch it again on IMAX 3D ... can't get enough ... you see so much more again and again ... can't wait for 2 , 3 and maybe a TV franchise ... now that would be cool ...

@Engineered68 - You are wrong...you are so wrong! But seriously, I really wish you guys would stop saying stuff like this. Your assumptions are all wrong in my case.

Engineered68 - Thank you so much for you comments. I am so sick of the fanboys here trashing this movie. Folks day one it's not an Alien movie! I am sick and tired of you hopeless Alien prequel fans trashing a great movie and a great director. And this is only the first installment. Any movie that can go this deep and answer alll your questions regarding not 1 but 2 or more movies that span 30 years would be 6 hours long at least. Hello - did iq's drop while I was away?

'Just watch the birth date of almost every account of people trashing the movie ... 90% are post june ...' ....And? Maybe that's because those people waited until they'd seen the movie first before they posted anything at all? Maybe they don't like posting about speculative information gleaned from trailers which could bear no resemblance to a finished product? I have nothing personal against speculation. But it's not for me. It goes on endlessly, and gets nowhere because there no facts to base it on.

Oh, and a long residency in one place doesn't give you dominion over what you might dub 'credible opinion'. A fat kid might sit at the back of the bus bullying everyone by shouting 'I got here first, so this is MY bus!'. But we all know it ain't true.

If I had to pick one critic to trust for a movie, it would be Ebert. Not that he is the 'greatest,' but I find that I am often in agreement with his outlook on movies. If he said it was 4 stars, that makes me very happy and even more excited.

@Engineered68 It lazy and disingenuous to dismiss all negative reviews as simply being fanboy rants, people with a hidden agendas against Lindelof or people who didn’t get what they wanted. Proper debate involves addressing the arguments and not simply attacking the individual. I dont see any coherent defense of this films faults, so they take the easy way our and thrown insults, ad homs and conspiracy theories at any negative views. This is fine, but people like Spartacus are beginning to look rabid and a little unhinged. I think what annoys me most is the blatant way in which the commercialisation seems to have got in the way of delivering the best film that RS could have made. It seems obvious that all the elements for a truly great film is there, but when I see talk of ‘holding back ideas’ to make sequels which, to a degree are conditional on Prometheus making a decent return, it goes from clever story telling, into the realms of arrogance and contempt for your audience and playing the commerical long game. Sequels are not justification for Prometheus's faults. The story just doesn’t have a strong idea and the script itself is a cliché riddled mess. LOTR is probably the best fantasy story ever written, and there is a key difference. We know it’s an epic trilogy, and if you’d actually bother to read and compare the film, you would see that the film breaks at different points to the book (which was anyway never written as three novels but as one story). Each films stands on its own and is consistent. Do we get to the end of FOTR and wonder WTF is going on? No, we see Frodo make a key choice and the film branches into two separate adventures. At no point is the narrative, or story lost. Compare this with the last scene in Prometheus. I had no expectations, but constantly being slapped in the face with Xenos, murals, the sets, the style and even a piece of stolen music, it’s pretty hard to escape the fact that this is an Alien film! I went with low expectations – I mean right next to f***ing dinosaur bones – and this didn’t even meet them! You’re wrong about the critical reviews, look at RT, 73% fresh and if you read the detail some of these are 3/5 ‘fresh’. The critics are not raving about it. Look at the Metascore (in a few weeks). Even those who like this don’t pretend it doesn’t have glaring issues like the story, script and characters. Personally theses are 2/3rd's of the film to me, so although it looks amazing it can never be regarded as anything above "average".
