esoteric
MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 3:41 PMI have a strong feeling this movie will not be at all what most of us think it will be. It may have very little, if hardly at all, anything to do with Alien. I hope it reveals the origin of the Aliens or something along those lines, but it may not. Clearly the focus is on the SJ and from the poster, the origin of man somehow? Keeping that in mind, I haven't heard anyone on any forum yet mention how that big statue of a face looks awful human for an alien statue. Perhaps the SJ are actually some distant ancestor or cousin? Maybe the human race are actually Aliens, product of intelligent design placed on earth by SJ. I can speculate and create ideas and scenarios aaall day, but until we see the movie, I don't think any of us will be that close.

MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 3:57 PMI'm in total agreement with you esoteric. This is going to be a very different film from Alien, tackling much bigger themes and issues. I think the xeno too will also be very different from what we are expecting. I like the idea of life being seeded on Earth but I doubt it's the SJ's that do it. In the teaser trailer there is a shot of a large ship hovering near a waterfall. Could this be part of the "beginning of time" sequence Ridley talks about? If so the ship looks mighty different from the typical SJ's ship we are familiar with. Could this be another alien species, perhaps "father" to both humans and SJ's???
Food for thought.

MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 3:59 PMThis movie probably has less to do with Alien than we think and probably has to do more with the concepts and universe in Alien. We'll probably not see any Xenomorphs, eggs, facehuggers, and chestbursters.
I certainly hope the movie is not about a mutant cabin-fever space-zombie kind of story. I'm hoping for something much more visceral with a psychological subtext to it. Alien is great because of the subtext of fears about rape, the mechanics of reproduction, and unwarranted pregnancy. The icing on the cake is that there was a monster on a confined spaceship with flashing lights and sirens.
So far, we don't know what Prometheus has going for it.

MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 4:26 PMActually this "intelligente design" motif is that makes me vaguely ill about the movie. I would rather prefer that all the talk about "von danikean" plots were only a decoy by Ridley Scott but unfortunately I think not.
One more thing, Mr. Scott himself exposed the trick: that "Alien" is merely a "haunted house" tale wrapped in a very attractive package. He surely is a skilled magician enought to not coming to the silverscreens with the same trick. That´s why I agree that "Prometheus" probably will have a different gist from "Alien".

MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 4:32 PMGiven Riddles' blatant previous attempts at misdirection I think it is safe to assume that that this movie is not going to be what we go in to the theater to see. I am expecting to be pleasantly surprised.

MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 4:41 PMIn the comic con interview Scott says to Lindelof he wants him to get started on the sequel right away. I think it's likely, as with most big, anticipated movies, that he's holding back quite a bit from the 1st in hopes of a sequel. Hopefully it doesn't flop. I'm sure I'll love the movie whatever direction he goes but I also know there are always those die-hard purist fans who just don't like anything, who the only way they'll like it is if it's EXACTLY what they imagined/wanted it to be.

I think that round object above the waterfall is a wormhole, not a ship.

MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 5:04 PMBut that's the trick isn't it? Loving alien as much as many of us do and building up this anticipation, yet still being able to just enjoy whatever he delivers when we finally get to see the movie.
I expect to:
1. Be impressed with the special effects
2. Enjoy the basic story
3. See an SJ suit or no suit in live action
4. Learn a bit about how or why the alien simply "is"
5. (if I'm lucky)see at least one persons brains get blasted out of the back of their head unexpectedly by an alien like creature... Might be asking to much there.
If I get these five, I will be glad I spent the money and will buy the DVD.
ALL generalizations are WRONG!
