Venom, to most, is recognized commonly by his black color, big white eyes, gaping jaw filled with rows of sharp teeth, a long tongue and of course, a giant white Tarantula symbol spanning his chest and back. However, it's apparent that Venom in Sony's latest adaptation starring Tom Hardy was designed without that final quality. The white Tarantula symbol does not and will not be present on Venom for this series of Venom movies Sony has planned. The reason for this decision? Simple, there is no Spider-Man. Of course fans will argue that Venom would not exist had he not bonded with Spider-Man first before finding Eddie Brock, director of the upcoming film Ruben Fleischer, told IGN during Comic-Con:
If you look at the comics, in Venom, there is just elements of white within his suit. Because our character does not originate from Spider-Man, it makes no sense to put a spider on his chest. We tried to be as accurate as we possibly could, even though some people feel it’s inaccurate, but there is a lot of white and we wanted to give him a distinctive pattern.
We already knew this Venom movie would exist outside Marvel's MCU which includes Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it's hard to neglect the fact that Spider-Man played a major role in Venom's character development and the reason for his bonding with Eddie Brock in the first place. They could have merely made reference to a Spidey in this alternate cinematic universe to avoid the confusion.
What do you think? Was it a bad move to remove all links to Spider-Man and Venom's Tarantula symbol? Does it even matter? Let us know in the comments!
