The Wrap is reporting that actor Jared Leto is being approached to play 'The Joker' in the 'Suicide Squad' movie. They report that script initially did not include the Joker, but script re-writes specifically included the Joker in a final draft of the movie. They mention intriguingly, that the character of the Joker may be optioned for multiple movies, as this was the reason why a previous actor rejected the role.
Our take: The inclusion of the Joker would mean a wealth of story possibilities for not only the Suicide Squad movie, but also future solo Batman stories as well. The Joker is Batman's archnemesis, and thus could feature in one of Batman's solo movies, as well as in other Justice League movies. The interesting thing is that the Joker is known to be a chaotic wild-card, unpredictable and random, even when working with others.
This news is also interesting in the light of recent rumors that Cara Delevigne will be joining the project in the capacity as Harley Quinn. In this case, his apperance may be factored in as a cameo or flashback relating how the Joker's past association with Harley Quinn was. Given how tied the two characters are, We do speculate also that they may name-drop Joker in some way even if he does not physically appear.
Suicide Squad is currently set for release on August 5, 2016. Justin Marks will be writing the Screenplay, and David Ayer is assigned to directing the movie. It will be the third installment in the DCU after Dawn of Justice, and the first DC movie to be centered directly around villains. As of now, there are no other actors confirmed to play a role in this movie yet.
