Mexican director Guillermo De Toro loves monsters; be they big or small, evil or benelovent, ugly or strangely beautiful, GDT loves them all and has featured many throughout his illustrious career as a movie director including the little imps from Are You fraid Of Trhe Dark, the Satyr from Pans Labyrinth, Luke Goss' Novak from Blade II, the Angel of Death from Hellboy II and of course the Kaiju from Pacific Rim. So it seems baffing that Universal Pictures have not contacted or employed GDT as at least a consultant in their planned Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe - can you imagine what GDT could do with characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Creature from the Back Lagoon. One of Hollywoods biggest mistakes I think most will agree.
Actors Burn Gorman (left) and Charlie Day (right) will return for the sequel in much meatier roles!
Regardless, the light and open hearted Mexican director has plans of his own, which include Justice League Dark, Mountains of Madness and a sequel to last years mega-monster hit Pacific Rim. Speaking recently to Collider GDT revealed some of the details and plans he has for the movie...
"It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”
“I think that two of our main characters, like in the first one, are Burn and Charlie. They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing, along with Hannibal Chau, so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them. I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Burn's] in Crimson Peak for that reason, because I love working with him. You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of robots, I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”
