Coming off rumors that Pacific Rim 2 has been delayed indefinitely, Guillermo del Toro told Entertainment Weekly that while it's true the project has been pushed back, Pacific Rim is still a go.
"We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it."
Apparently the delay is fairly significant, del Toro continued, “It moved further. I may do another movie in the middle.”
This is bothersome, because del Toro has a history of passion projects not seeing the light of day. He even lumps Pacific Rim 2 in that category:
“I can tell you this, if I was a billionaire, I would definitely do Hellboy 3, Pacific Rim 2, and At the Mountains of Madness. And I would quickly become a millionaire.”
Putting Pacific Rim 2 next to the much desired, but unlikely, Hellboy 3 may say something about Pacific Rim 2's true fate. Will the movie ever get made? We hope. The fact that del Toro is considering other work in the meantime seems like a bad sign. "Pushed back" is often a flowery phrase for "dead" in Hollywood.
Hopefully good news will develop soon.
