German actor Gottfried John, who memorably played the role of General Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov in 'Goldeneye passed away this Monday at the age of 72. The Hollywood reporter has reported that Gottfried John passed away iin Munich after a long battle with Cancer. He is survived by his wife.
They report that Gottfried's first breakthrough role was playing the villainous General Ourumov in 'Goldeneye' alongside Pierce Brosnan. As General Ouromov, Gottfried's villain menanced Bond during the course of the movie, allying himself with the film's other villains Alex Trevalyn and Xenia Oniatopp in order to steal the titular 'Goldeneye' satellite.
His Role in Goldeneye enabled him to get roles in films such as 'The Ogre' alongside John Malkovich, and in 'Proof of Life' alongside Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan. The Hollywood Reporter describes him as continuing with acting until his illness became too advanced and he was forced to retire after a succesful career with several films to his credit.
Our take: This is indeed a tragic loss, and not only to all Bond fans, but to the film community at large. His role in Goldeneye was extremely memorable, and he did convey a dedication to the role as well. Our condolences go out to his family in this time.
