Although plans (and hopes) for Pacific Rim 2 seem to be put to rest, the franchise will continue to thrive through other attractions--in this case, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California. Pacific Rim 5D will be a motion controlled, short film at the Discovery Kingdom's SimEx-Iwerks Turbo Theater. Park president Don McCoy announced the new attraction based on the 2013 film:
“Bringing in an intense, high-energy and popular movie like Pacific Rim to our Iwerks 5D Theater is a great addition to our thrill line-up. Kids and adults alike will be blown away being part of the ground-shaking action.”
A date will be released for the attraction in the next few weeks. In the meantime Pacific Rim 5D can be previewed at the Iwerks Theater at Six Flags.
It is with certain suspicion that this announcement come right after reports of Pacific Rim 2 not happening. Is there still hope? Or was a deal made to lighten the blow and continue to make money off the franchise? Is it just a happy coincidence?
Perhaps its naive to believe it's all a conspiracy. But with fans as heartbroken as they are over the fate of Pacific Rim 2 speculation can't be helped. In the meantime we know at least some variation of the franchise will soldier on.
What do think of Pacific Rim 5D? Are you close enough to experience it? Will you go even if you're not? If the attraction is a big success do you think studios might take notice? Let us know and as always we'll continue to reset the clock.
