BlackAnt pointed out a detail about Aliens I had never noticed. The problem is that the injury is inconsistent with the scene. First, the iconic scene:

Here is the issue. The knife blade game was played with palms and fingers down:

But we see Bishop's injury was on the opposite side of his finger that was on the table surface:

That's what I like about this Forum. Sometimes we can see things decades later that we didn't notice before. Thanks, BlackAnt.

Overthinking. This is common in films - just another movie blooper. It doesn't give us new information about androids or anything else.

Somebody: Points out the mistake in Aliens (1986)

Aliens fans:

"We all have our time machines, don't we. Those that take us back are memories...And those that carry us forward, are dreams."

@Dark Nebula

This is not some ordinary mistake.....please read the Alien: Vengeance topic http://www.alien-covenant.com/topic/49910

So you can understand that this is not a movie blooper.....I believe the cut is on the right side of the finger where Bishop slips with the knife.

Synthetics such as Bishop are not capable of making those kinds of errors in fine motor skills....has to be a deeper programming issue....but please read the topic and see why we are really discussing this before you make these daft statements.......@Leto you just enjoy saying the first thing that comes to mind too don't you....daaaafffft!!!! LOL

VivisectedEngineer

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2020 10:12 AM

Hm...I do think it would be possible to graze the side of one's finger in that position.

And, I also think this scene was intended to show that while synthetics are more dexterous and precise than humans, they're still fallible.

BigDave

MemberDeaconAug-14-2020 2:49 PM

Another thing to Consider is we have a HUMAN HAND that is under Bishop.... any Slight Movement by Hudson by even the Slightest could also move Bishops Hand above by the Slightest amount that could Account for a Error/Wound.

@BigDave

Good point. I'm blaming Hudson for a) goading Bishop into playing the knife game in the first place, and then b) getting him injured with his panicky inability to keep still.

In conclusion, Bishop is awesome and Hudson needs to chill.

dk

MemberTrilobiteAug-14-2020 5:34 PM

It's easy to read a lot into this decades later, and I will continue!

Although Hudson goaded Bishop, Drake grabbed Hudson's wrist and Bishop did not pause, seeming to quickly read Drake's intent. Bishop simply said, "Yes- YOU!" That almost seems like a form of passive aggression- a human trait.

VivisectedEngineer

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2020 8:31 PM

Yes! Do let's continue!

Hmm, just re-watched the scene. Isn't it Drake that says "Yeah you."? And then Bishop says "Trust me."

Well, regardless, Bishop going through with it DOES seem passive aggressive!

And I too would be passive aggressive towards people trying to put my safety at risk for their amusement.

Aggression (passive or otherwise) is also a protective/self preservation measure. Bishop's actions will likely deter Hudson and others from trying to goad him into doing the knife thing in the future!

(Humans have been well programmed by evolution for survival, and Bishop's programmers have done well to synthesize similar traits.)

dk

MemberTrilobiteAug-14-2020 9:05 PM

VivisectedEngineer You are correct- it was Drake.

It is also interesting that the crew was all in for the entertainment and was not bothered when Bishop's identity was revealed. It only bothered Ellen. It was a different story with Alien.

Someone should do a similar topic about Call.

Ahhhhhh mutiny against the obvious now! is that how it's going to be? Well well well and there be the ends of the democracy and freedom we all thought was right and just throughout all the lands, LOL.

I suppose next we won't be able to say those certain words that upset the king.......

No I am afraid I disagree le capitaine!!! The knife nor Hick's hand did not slip - but we now know there is no real freedom to disagree (with you know who_______) that it might have......or it be the digital prison me thinks!!! No I did not mention any names of course! No no no....no names were mentioned here!
Nor down here either.....or over -------> here......

Mate I suggest you read the Guidelines of which you accepted to adhere to when you registered, and stow the attitude.

Its pretty simple. Just show Respect to other members. You have a right to disagree and debate an opinion, that's fine, but insulting or degrading others is not on. You can call me the fun-police or the mutineer all you want, but I will defend our members rights not to be put down. We're here to get away from all that crap and just discuss a topic we all have in common.

 I Raptus is right, we need to find a way to get along and disagree respectfully.

...Maybe we need some kind of team building activity or something. Perhaps an escape room! (With an ovomorph in the center of the room for good measure. It's perfectly safe, I assure you... The countdown is on!)

(And, as Bishop has demonstrated, the knife blade game makes another viable option for a game of trust among colleagues.

...Really we could do a whole Alien themed office Olympics here.)

dk

MemberTrilobiteAug-15-2020 6:07 PM

Or just do as Burke suggested- build a fire and sing a couple songs.

I.Raptus

ModeratorPraetorianAug-15-2020 7:11 PM

Outstanding. all we need now is a deck of cards :)

VivisectedEngineer I like your idea of a team-building activity. We need to do that group video!

But Perhaps some trust falls in an egg-room too lol

MemberChestbursterAug-16-2020 10:11 AM

@I Raptus

Oh yes! The group video! I'm still down for that! (Although, Now I kind of wish I'd done it three years ago, before I'd aged by about ten years in that time...)

Hey! We could take some inspiration from all those quarantine videos people have been making! You know, like, the ones where one person throws something off screen and the next person appears to catch it?

We could throw a facehugger around at each other lol.

"Someone should do a similar topic about Call."

Oh yeah, that would be interesting! I need to go back and rewatch Resurrection first. (This is my last week of summer vacation and I'm trying to rewatch all my favorite Alien movies)

"It is also interesting that the crew was all in for the entertainment and was not bothered when Bishop's identity was revealed."

There's nothing to reveal.  They all knew he was a robot.  He was originally supposed to be awake on the ship while they slept and handed out towels like a valet after they woke up.

As to the original post - not seeing a mistake.  Every machine can develop faults.

VivisectedEngineer

MemberChestbursterAug-17-2020 4:41 PM

 @S.M

Yeah, but I think dk's point is, it's interesting to see the different ways people react to the synthetics.

Like, on Ripley's mission his presence was unexpected. Nearly 60 years later, in Aliens, Bishops presence was very normal. Then by the time Resurrection rolls around, Autons are outlawed. It's just interesting to do a little comparative analysis on that.

I think the supposed mistake in the scene is that the cut on Bishop's finger is on the wrong side.

AND I think BlackAnt was making an interesting observation that Bishop was in fact able to put humans at risk, because the injury proves that his success in the knife game was not assured.

(In another thread we were having like, a general discussion about the synthetics and that's how the whole topic came up. )

MemberXenomorphAug-18-2020 2:07 AM

Hudson wasn't at risk though - he cut himself.

BigDave

MemberDeaconAug-18-2020 5:32 AM

I think IF there is the Potential of a Mistake then Bishop would have been UNAWARE he would make a Mistake and so while he ONLY had Cut himself there was the SLIGHT chance he could have Cut Hudson.  We have to look at the ODDS in the Mind of Bishop for this TRICK/ACT having a Mistake and he would have Determined the RISK to Hudson being EXTREMELY LOW.

If you look at the KNIFE THROWING TRICK....  and we have all seen these surely?   The Person who is getting the Knives thrown at them is in SAFE HANDS as the Knife Thrower would be VERY SKILLFUL... so NOT many Accidents Happen.

The GREATEST RISK to the Person who is having the Knives thrown at them would come from HOW MUCH they MOVE!

And so i still think this is the most Plausible way to explain HOW it was that Bishop made a Slight Mistake.... you could Perform this Trick Flawless but you would be at Risk of Error  due to the Movement of the Persons Hands under your Own.

A long journey through the cold and dark places of the Outer Veils of fiction, and I return to find...

That not a whole lot has changed, for which I am very glad to see. The Bishop Error, I have to go with the idea of a slight error when doing the trick owing to Hudson's slight movement. It's very likely Hudson at some point had a reflexive jerk-back movement in his hand, and in compensating for such Bishop nicked his finger--possibly as a deliberate action to spare Hudson even that slight harm.

In the end, I'm still just blown away that Lance Henriksen did the trick unaided with trick photography...and the table's condition shows it. lol

Missed you all, and will be a once-again more active member as I have finally worked out some long-troubling points about working in the ALIENverse and what to pursue as a long-awaited and talked-about sequel to ALIEN: Manticore

Also, updated where folks can find my previous works, Issuu makes it easier for readers.

@Blackwinter-witch it is so amazingly lovely to see you again! It really is a feeling like returning home, isn't it?

"...possibly as a deliberate action to spare Hudson even that slight harm."

You know what, I love this theory. I think you're right, Bishop was sure to move his own hand in such a way that it would get nicked instead of Hudson's.

(Looking forward to your latest work!!!! Also, I made some edits to one of my old stories and posted it on AO3, but maybe I should go back to the original post here, and apply the edits as well.

...Also, as I'm a mom now and therefore a captive audience to children's media, I have begun work on a crossover between Alien and a human A.U. of The Octonauts... Please just trust me, it's going to be awesome.)

CONGRATS!!! Motherhood...Fulfillment and frustration in perfect combo!! Give all my loves to your little one!! <3

Yes, it's so much like returning hom, something very important to me now. There was an online game Battlestar Galactica Online, it was an on and off fixed-point in my life for a long time, since closed Beta...they shut it down last year, and it left me feeling 'lost'...then the old 'oxcart' Retired itself, so I felt cut-off from all my works. Long, sad story short--I am very happy to be back!! :D

With Bishop, and his personality, his minor act of self-sacrifice would be fully in keeping with him. Even were he loaded with WY sleeper routines, he'd be the type to fight them I would say.

'AO3'? Can I ask for a link? I'm somewhat behind the times, and it's so insanely hot here right now y'all are lucky I'm actually communicating in a lucid manner. lol Also, I know the temptation to go and do edits...I would suggest as and when...take it piecemeal.

Alright, trust on Octonaughts meeting the AU is given...I admit, I'm intrigued and Curious!!

Thank-you for letting me know you're looking fwd to ORIGINS...it's been on the shelf for a while...ran into a minor stall as some things just needed more development...now though, I have that figured out, and it's time to get it done and out there. :)

Let's just say that the Prometheus Expedition had the grand good luck of NOT encountering the Engineers of LV-223 prior to the Black Liquid Incident that shut everything down. ;)

@Blackwinter-witch

Wonderful to have you home. I'm sorry that your Battlestar Galactica game got shut down. It's very sad when important main-stays of our lives come to an end. Especially when they're our ways of connecting with others.

I suffered a long absence myself and I've only just returned actually! And I really missed you guys!

@BigDave & @Blackwinter-witch

Lol, thanks for your trust and well-wish on my Octonauts crossover! Without giving too many spoilers, it's an alternate universe where they're human but still have the same names, roles, and personalities as on the show. (I.e. Shellington is still a workaholic biologist with terrible piloting skills, Peso the easily spooked medical officer, Kwazii the superstitious roughneck with a criminal past. etc...)

But they're in space instead of underwater, obviously. ...And they have an encounter with the perfect organism. And they have my sympathies. ... :)

Thank you Blackwinter-witch ! Very blessed to have my sweet little guy! He's a perfect ball of mischief.

I already posted these here back when I wrote them (but I edited them a bit before posting on A03:

@VivisectedEngineer Thanks for the Welcome back, and Likewise to you of course!!

Yes, it's sad to lose it, but we had some advance warning, and the players had a chance to do something special as a commemoration before the servers went dark. Sadly-missed, and fondly-remembered.

Okay....from your little teaser...I'm Sold on the Octonauts crossover!! You really have my Curiosity going...but, NO pressure, I can haz Patience. :D

Archive of Our Own....wow, heats really cooking me. I have a profile there...should have made the connection, but when it's too hot, I just cannot think. Heading over to grab a look and Bookmark to ensure I can find my way back again! TY for the links!
