Hey guys. Its been about 6 months since King of the Monsters raided our local theaters and man, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. It was a 5-year long wait for the anticipated sequel and honestly, it just wasn't worth the wait. Before I get shamed harder than Zilla '98, allow me to share my 3 big reasons why:

Sense of Scale

One thing Godzilla (2014) did was establish a beautiful sense of scale. When Godzilla appeared on screen, you can see that compared to the manmade surroundings, he was larger than life. There was weight when he was on-screen and when he moved. KotM didn't have that weight. There was no badass sense of scale. It was just an "oh hey, he's on-screen now" kind of deal. The cinematography didn't properly capture that.

Fan-Service does not equal good.

This was a movie for fans. However, that's where it falls flat. Its a movie that relies on references to past Godzilla flicks that only fans would know when it should be focusing on being enjoyable on its own. It doesn't cater to all audiences. It does nothing to keep new audiences interested. Even as a fan I was disappointed. That Oxygen Destroyer bit? Ruined the sense of terror that came with that name and it was used so poorly. That name alone carries emotional weight. Instead, it was used in the middle of the movie, and to show that Ghidorah was alien. Really?

Fights were underwhelming...

This one was the biggest turn off for me. All of the fights are completely boring and underwhelming. The shots before the start of the fights are better than the fights themselves. Even worse, they barely show the fights because the characters aren't directly involved in them. Why should character involvement dictate whether they can show a battle or not? Godzilla (2014) did that and it was annoying and the sequel shouldn't have followed that same formula. A sequel should improve the flaws of its predecessor, not use those same flaws. What's worse is that they had more iconic monsters to use in this playground and they were overshadowed by characters more wooden than Sequoias.

These are the big three for me. I can't be the only one that's annoyed with it. I can go on forever about how fight sequences should be done in monster movies. What do you all think? I'm open to argue.

I'm one of the few here that's with you, although for different reasons. I thought the fights were fine and the scale worked, but since I didn't care about the characters the battles had no real stakes. Why worry about the world coming to an end when you'd rather see mind-numbing characters bite the dust?

I completely agree about the fan service though. It was a bit much. Nothing like looking around a theater full of confused people wondering why there are multiple generations of twins randomly introduced in the film. I remember one person asking if it had something to do with the monsters' radiation. Couldn't blame them for the reach.

@GMan Out of a whole group of friends I went with. Only me, and 2 others understood the reference haha. I just feel so underwhelmed and frustrated when rewatching the film because I feel it should’ve been handled a lot better. They had so much to play with in terms of monsters and worldwide chaos and it just came up flat.

I don't even own the movie yet--The last time I watched it was in theaters back in July. I'll revisit it eventually.

You guys didn't like the movie and I understand your reasons why and your frustrations with it, but I honestly loved it. I probably agree with some criticisms of it, but it was fun and entertaining for me. Basically, I had/have a good time watching it.
The 2014 movie is perhaps a better made movie, and Gareth Edwards a better director/filmmaker, but at the end of the day that movie for me is dull. The first hour is very good, maybe even excellent, but as soon as Godzilla finally "appears" (for 12 seconds), the second half is like watching paint dry, and the end battle just didn't justify the rest of it. I own it and I've seen it probably five times since 2014. I also own KOTM and I've seen that 7-8 times. I respect that some people didn't like it and why, but like I said, for all it's flaws, the good outweighed the bad for me.

I mean you're clearly not alone. And I'll even admit it's a very fun movie, especially when you first watch it. The battles on their own were a blast and fan service definitely got me too. But after awhile I need more to justify rewatching it.

You know what? I used to think this was the best film of 2019, but now even saying that is just a "bit" of a stretch. I agree with these criticisms, and I absolutely love 2014 over KOTM 2019, and I'm disappointed because it is not supposed to be that way.

Plus I am surprised no-one brought up Kong: Skull Island to justify their arguments further, but for me, it flip-flops between that film and 2014 as my favorite/the best of the Monsterverse movies (even though it leans slightly more towards 2014). It's just so disappointing, and I hope Adam Wingard doesn't ruin this further in 2020.

King of the monsters still is my favorite out of the monsterverse.

Zwei Wing is the best singing duo. Change my mind.

I like it better than G'14. Now that I have watched all 3 MV films again That's how I feel. I do agree that the excessive fan service did alienate a lot of the GA and was one of the reasons it under performed. The cutting away in G'14 and the 90 minute build up just rubbed me the wrong way. I will admit the fight between G and the MUTO was cool. K:SI was decent; That's pretty much all I have to say about that. KOTM's characters had bizarre motivations and Charles Dance was criminally under-used. The monster fights and designs are the cream of the crop (Love me some Behemoth!); I'd be lying if I said otherwise. The only thing I didn't like as far as the monsters go was Rodan's roar; I would've liked it to sound closer to his 1956 roar. That roar was just savage; It sounded like a homicidal maniac!

I loved the movie... but I have to admit it has a LOT of flaws. I don't know whether I prefer 2014 or KOTM now. 2014 felt like it "meant" more and was perfectly balanced. There was mystery behind the titans, and you can actually enjoy the characters. I do have some gripes with 2014, though. They cut away from the first fight against the MUTO and put it on a little television. Seriously? I don't care if that first fight was supposed to be short, DON'T MAKE US WATCH IT THROUGH ANOTHER TV!!!!! Also, on the topics of fights, the last fight was kinda underwhelming, I feel like there should have been more moves or actions or a little bit more run-time for it, and at least have the MUTO try to fight back as Godzilla is about to rip its head off! Still, though, the final fight was AWESOME. The sense of scale was MUCH more superior in 2014 than KOTM, in my opinion. Hell, everything in KOTM felt around the same size or smaller than in Skull Island, in my opinion. Sometimes they got the scale right there... but they didn't feel like they had much weight in my opinion. I loved some of the fan service! But the oxygen destroyer... and the twins part probably alienated a lot of main audience. They wasted the oxygen destroyer and they used the twins when they could have been a plot point in a future movie! Though, if a movie where the main villain was born from the use of that oxygen destroyer, to show humanity its mistake in using such powerful weapons willy nilly and to make what seemed kinda unimportant ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS EVER would be an incredible use of the weapon, and it'd probably catch me off guard (I forget most of my and other theories by the time the movie I'm waiting for comes around lol). My other main gripe with 2014 is that they got Bryan Cranston for about 20 minutes... and killed him incredibly quick. Couldn't have saved his death for near the end, so we've had more time to bond with his character and the impact is larger for the audience, which in turns make's the impact on Ford feel much greater? They could have begun to start rebuilding their relationship and then BAM! Dead. Would have been at least a shock! It's like how they killed Graham in KOTM for a joke... but killing Cranston basically turned my mother off from the franchise for YEARS. He was basically the whole reason she watched it in the first place XD. I feel like if you go through all the trouble of getting such a high profile character to just kill them in the first 20 minutes, you're doing something a little wrong. Especially when you advertise them so much! It's like if in Rampage all the teasers showed Dwayne Johnson, but they kill him off when George breaks out of the zoo or on the airplane. It would feel like a bit of a waste and absolute lies in the trailers. Despite my main gripes with 2014, it was more than just a dumb fun movie. It felt like I was genuinely worried for the characters, it was mysterious, and Godzilla's reveal was AWESOME!!!! In KOTM... it kinda just felt like watching a bunch of jello shaped like Kaiju fighting, kinda like at the end of Jurassic World, but in the latter it was a surprise and like HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS THE JURASSIC PARK FIGHT WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!! A RAPTOR AND A T-REX FIGHTING A HYBRID AND THE MOSA WOOOOOOOOO- where in KOTM it's entirely expected. Especially when so much of it was spoiled in the trailers... I mean come on? You spoiled Burning Godzilla? On the subject of Burning Godzilla... you kinda wasted him! Not only could that have made an awesome movie about Godzilla's death like in Godzilla V.S. Destoroyah, not only did it only last a minute, not only was it used on GHIDORAH of all creatures, BUT IT WAS USED IN THE SECOND MOVIE?!!!! It was awesome at first... until you realized that if every opponent he faces gets stronger, he has to go Burning every time or get some other kind of power up, instead like in most Godzilla movies, you just enjoy Godzilla in his standard form. I'm fully expecting Godzilla to go Burning again in GVK or the next one (if there is one), or already get his Spiral Atomic Breath or some other ability. Still, KOTM had pretty good action, especially in Rodan's scene with the jets. Had a good message... but some stuff was done wrong. Also, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MYSTERY?!! They basically knew everything about the Kaiju in this one! What happened to the sense of wonder?

But worst of all... they put all the Kaiju in the same genus. THAT IS NOT HOW BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE WORKS UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHLGOYIGLKHKYFJH<FHKLGKLH-

Sorry, still bitter about that bit...

I love KOTM. It’s easily one of my favorite Godzilla films.

I liked the fights and thought the sense of scale was really good, but I agree on the fan service. Some references were fun but the Oxygen Destroyer was too much.

Overall I thought it was a pretty good movie. Liked Kong more though.
