As you know, the killer pods have a significant role in Alien Covenant. They appear in this scene:

And they appear here as well:

Between these two I've found a third scene where these killer balls are shown. They are hiding on the broken tree trunks:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mutagenic pathogen (black goo) --> Host --> Hybridized creatures are produced (trilobites, insect-like motes in pods, parasites) --> Host again --> Xenomorph-like hybridized creatures are produced (deacon, neomorph)

Applied to the movies:

Prometheus:

Mutagenic pathogen (black goo/virus) --> host (Holloway/Shaw) --> hybridized creature (trilobite) --> host again (the last Engineer) --> xenomorph-like hybridized creature (the Deacon)

Alien Covenant:

Mutagenic pathogen (black goo/virus) --> host (fungus) --> hybridized creature (insect-like motes in pods) --> host again (Ledward) --> xenomorph-like hybridized creature (the Neomorph)

Mutagenic pathogen (black goo/virus) --> host (Planet 4 Engineers) --> hybridized creature (parasites bursting from the dying Engineers) --> host again (not revealed in the movie) --> xenomorph-like hybridized creature (not revealed in the movie)

Alien (1979):

/Mutagenic pathogen --> host(s): segment of the process controlled by the Engineers or David 8/ --> hybridized creature (facehugger in the alien egg) --> host again (Kane) --> xenomorph-like hybridized creature (the 1979 Xenomorph)

Those were shown so quickly I missed them while watching- nice grabs!

Interestingly, other members have observed their similarities in appearance to the egg silo:

dk - It can be said they have the same role.

Nice catch, the eggs sacks are very similar to Lycoperdon pyriforme puffball fungi, that also when poped releases spores into the air (well not the ones that cause neomorphs to grow inside the abdomen).

dk/Dark Nebula - Thanks for the images.

Yes, If I know correctly, that fungus-idea is included in Covenant as well.

If you look at the chart I included, fungus has the role of the (first) host in this process.

GREAT CATCH!

That really throws a Spanner into a Theory i had, because we see Ledwood gets infected near a stream so the Spores were Growing in Moss located near the Water Source, we see that Hallet is infected inside the Juggernaught's Cargo Hold and as they enter this area we can see Water, and it appears the Juggernaught may have crashed on top of a Stream running down the Mountain, so Mold and Moss has grown inside and eventually evolved into those Spores.

The only Logical Theory i have is that some Urns that were never dropped had tipped over the Black Goo contents during the Crash, and this infected the areas of Moss and Entered the Stream and worked its way down to where Ledwood was infected.

But the finding of those Spores on the Trees, means its likely the Bombardment left particles of Black Goo that infected Mold/Moss that must have Harbinged Fungi that got Evolved into those Neomorph Spores.

Good job noticing the mutated fungi on the tree trunks!

The pathogen which leaked out from the juggernaut into the stream might also have reached the lake where the lander was? Probably there was once fish and other animals in that lake? Faris was walking in the ancle deep water there . . . :)

Not talking about David's bombing which infected the whole city and the mountains around it...

Nice catch, Big Dave!

I never realised it and after reading your post, I firmly believe that it was some of the left over Black Goo urns which got tipped over and spilled all over the place all the way down stream and mutated the fungus pods which came across.

Till now, I had theorised that after the Black goo was bombarded, killing all the humanoids on the planet, it settled down and the remnant black goo mutated the fungus pods. But that doesn't sound as a likely scenario.

The pods were interesting, I did not get the connection between the pods and the Giger drawing but I see that now. It was too dark so I did not see the pods in the tree trunks. Unfortunately we did not get any connection to those that were infected by the spores.

I think the connections are supple much like Deacon and Hammerpede's they was not TOO HR Giger Bio-Mechanical as far as the Xenomorph Aesthetic, but saying that every movie after Aliens the Giger Aesthetic is toned down...  The New Born in Alien does not look much like the Xenomorph, because its a Hybrid, the Xenomorphs also not 100% the same as those in Alien, they look much more Organic... again because they was from Ripleys Blood so we have to assume contained Human DNA, hence why the Queen was Pregnant with the New Born.

Prometheus did steer a bit away from a Direct Xenomorph Bio-Mechanical Aesthetic as far as the Organism looking Part Mechanical and Part Organic. With the route they are taking now we have to wonder how the Mechanical Element will be introduced....

Originally before the Prequels the one thing that stood out was Genetically so to speak, certainly Aesthetically the Xenomorph and Derelict Ship seemed to share similar Traits and had to be connected, which is something Gigers Mural and ideas implied.

It would be nice to see a more Giger-esque Aesthetic introduced in the future.

Stellar find Ati. Thank you so much.

I believe Dark Nebula nailed it with the puffball fungi. Great job.

BigDave - And look at David's son in the background. :) Look at how happy he is. :D This is the moment when the fungi make you happy. 8D
