Let's pretend Katherine Waterston was not available for Alien Covenant. What actress would you chose next for the role of Daniels?

It is not Waterston's fault how bad her character turned out. Anyway, I don't think Daniels will be in the next film.

Most probably she will end up like Jacob. I feel Waterston was miscast as Daniels, it's not her fault, she gave her best.

Katee Sackhoff perfect lead for the Alien Franchise!!!!!

sackhoff would be an excellent choice for an alien film but I think shes more typecast as a tough chick straight off the bat so I don't think the daniels character would have been right for her. that character, much like ripley, isn't initially a tough nut but is meant to grow into that role as people around her get knocked off whereas with BG and Riddick, shes possibly played too many tougher characters for that role. if she hadn't played Vickers id have said Theron wouldv been a much better choice

ali81 agreed, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba were criminally under-utilised in Prometheus sadly. For such great actors they should been kept on for future roles.

iraptus, u think maybe they might be kicking themselves thinking 'we should have probably held off and cast Theron as daniels'?

I think Theron was used solely for marketing. that has to be the only reason as the part was so badly thought out and executed for such a top notch actor as her. their thinking possibly along the lines of bring in a big name to attract viewers as so many fans had been dismayed at the change of course of the movie from direct alien prequel to what it became?

on a side note, Waterston should have kept the long hair. 'she is severely f******e' in that pic lol

I liked Daniels, but this was clearly David's movie... IF she had defeated David, it would have completely changed her character.(everyone would have screamed 'Ripley clone')

Seeing Daniels kill David would have been cool....(Even just eject it into space....or blast it's head off....etc...)

Apparently Daniels was thought as a Ripley clone, or at least we were supposed to believe it until she gets locked into the pod and David reveals himself. She even used a Ripley line (I got you, you son of a bitch) when fighting the alien in the terraforming bay. But she did not convince me as a next in line of command character. She was not a match even for Oram. Although we are led to be compassionate and care for Daniels from the very beginning of the film, I wanted to care more for her in the end but unfortunately I thought the best of her died when Jacob died. If only she could have been stronger, self possessed,  not crying all the time.

I really liked how Waterson portrayed Daniels. Great character but didn't get a chance to really shine like Ripley did in the past- because it was about David. I think Daniels could have been a similar character to Ripley if written a bit differently.

It's a positive thing she does not get to build the cabin on the lake, it would have turned the film into a Doctor Quinn in space. Or maybe that's the quinn David talks about in Advent. His medicine woman.

I don't like Daniels and Waterston is just increasing my hate. I think this character is absolutely unnecessary to Alien story.  Maybe if she was portrayed by another actress I would like her a little bit more. I read that Rebecca Ferguson was cast for this role, I would prefer her much more than Waterston.

Sackhoff would be a interesting Actress to use, i think she could play well as a member of the Company Ship that is incoming and she then realizes the risks and evil in the pursuit of her Companies Plans, and she tries to Sabotage it, and prevent the Company and David obtaining the Xenomorph.

I dont think they need to re-cast Daniels, if they are going to use Daniels in the next movie then indeed they have to use Waterston and i think she would be interested in reprising her role..

A lot depends on what PLOT they have in store for Daniels.. as the Ending does leave it unlikely Daniels can be allowed to survive this movie.  Thet Set-up they have for the next movie does kind of Limit what can be done with Daniels Character.

If the movie ended where she was non the wise about WALTER, then indeed she could have played a larger role... and one where she uncovers the Truth during the Movie.

The way it ended now....  How does David keep Daniels on ICE and awake other members of the crew and explain where Daniels is, especially to Tennessee, sorry but the way its been done only leaves it Logical for Tennessee and Daniels to not last long.

Do they have a Plot where David, Daniels and Tennessee are on the ship... i think this would not be the case for the same reasons that FOX maybe thought a movie that would revolve mainly around David and Dr Shaw for most of the movie would not make a Good one.

And so....

Looking a the potential Plot having Daniels and Tennessee  awake and interact with other Crew does make for a limited Plot, or one where the awoken crew and Daniels with Tennessee must try and escape the Horrors of David and his Creations on the Covenant ship.  This would just give us a kind of ALIEN Meets Alien Resurrection kind of a Flick.

Also looking at how they are setting up the movies to eventually lead to ALIEN and how David is off to Origae-6 we assume, i cant see them having a movie that covers a lot of shenanigans on board the Covenant

so Sadly i think Daniels and Tennessee will maybe play a short role, maybe as Flash Backs.

I'd just get rid of her role. I thought David was the most fascinating thing about Alien: Covenant. I was so into the movie when David was shown but when Daniels came on screen I lost my fascination. I think they need to put a halt on female lead characters for a while. Ripley was absolutely perfect, Shaw was good, Daniels was bad. They need to stop trying to recreate Ripley. Ridley needs to mix things up in the franchise. Star Wars did a similar thing. After all lead characters being male they made the lead character a female for change. Even though Star Wars is shit now I'm sure the Alien franchise would only improve with a lead character like David or Tennessee.

I enjoyed Waterson as Daniels and thought she did great for what the character was. Obviously she was meant to evoke Ripley as the females in the Alien universe are strong characters. I believe her role was simply meant to showcase how much of a threat David is if he can take out someone like Ripley as he did with Shaw.

I liked her dad from Law & Order (Sam Waterston)...a real stone face assistant DA with good one liners making fun of criminals and the time they faced. So, Waterston as Daniels worked for me to begin with. I thought she was great in Alien: Covenant. She was convincing in her grief..my opinion.

The prequel novel has so much more from Daniels, Lope, Rosenthal, and Branson and my opinion may be skewed because of this character development in prequel novel. Sergeant Lope is the main character for great portions of the novel (a great thing).

If Katherine Waterston wasn't available for Daniels then I would throw all my support behind Bryce Dallas Howard. She could be my hero.

I would try Brit Marling as Daniels.

I still like Waterson. I have no issues with the women pictured, but Waterson was like Weaver in that she was strong yet vulnerable and wasn't sexed up. They were regular people.

Lets just hope Awakening doesn't turn into some type of Aliens Hunger Games with the Colonists pitted against David's beasties......

I think that she did the best with what she had to work with but the character of Daniels was too anonymous. At least she wasn't as annoying and stupid as Shaw so I didn't have to endure that crap. Most of the characters were too poorly written in AC so it is not just Daniels that could have been better. Unfortunately they put all the thought into David and reduced the humans because of that, which was stupid.

IRaptus: I like the character of Janek but Vickers was just kind of boring. She was an asshole and didn't care for her father issues but that was all that she had, I didn't feel anything when she died I was just like “OK, that's that”. Unfortunately most characters in Prometheus were like that (either I didn't care for them or they annoyed  me). Fassbender and Elba saved Prometheus from being worse.

Ali81: Nah, she looks better with short hair.

MonsterZero: She could have blown him up using dynamite when they were on the planet. That could have been a great scene. Imagine David's head flying some kilometers while his body is a pile of ash (no pun intended).

A "David's head" comet...that's pretty good Thoughts_Dreams.

Thoughts_Dreams I agree about Vickers characters, they wasted a really good actor on a 1 dimension character that they could have cast anyone for.

Theron should've been used for a more robust lead role.

iraptus totally agree with u on Theron, she would have made for a better Daniels imo

dk, have to disagree with u bud. Daniels was nothing like Ripley and I think she was written deliberately to be different so to limit the amount of obvious comparisons between the 2 characters. ripey had character, something about her that jumped off the screen. u wanted her to make it off the ship or kill the xeno. daniels couldv died and it would have had no effect on the film. she was poorly written and not well portayed imo.

MemberTrilobiteOct-25-2017 10:37 PM

ali81 Fair enough. I perceived Daniels as a character who was tough as nails yet had vulnerability and I admired that. Unfortunately, the character development/possibilities were over shadowed by David.

On Daniels killing David:

I think it would be much better if she beheaded him and threw him in a sack.  Maybe use it as a basketball.(David likes basketball)

MonsterZero: All done while David laughs and says “look at me I am a flying head!” :D

There was a band named The Bouncing Souls years ago.

Yes I have a strange sense of humor.

Thanks Ingeniero
