Engineer Pilot's Helmet

The below images were enhanced to bring out the detail in the Engineer pilot's helmet.

Nice pictures, Ingeniero. But one wonders why the engineer pilot would need a helmet in the spaceship? Also, the engineer seemed to cope quite well with the atmosphere on LV-223, without a helmet, when he chased Shaw? Or did he take it off in the airlock? He was also bruised/burned on the side of his head so the helmet didn't fully protect him?

Really nice images. The first time I saw the SJ/Engineer suit it reminded me a lot of the jet fighter pilot helmets.

Thank you Dark Nebula. Yes, the Engineer pilot helmet and the examples you show are too close for coincidence. Great examples above and thank you for those too.

Giger had to be considering the human example when crafting the Space Jockey suit.

I believe that the pilot's suit is linked up with the Engineer's body similar to the feeds in the Engineer hypersleep chamber chli. The Engineers also wore the suits for protection inside the pyramid on LV-223 (see hologram below).

Our modern pilot's suits provide vital resources such as air, water, etc...while the Engineer's pilot's suit most likely provides a more "intimate" link with the Engineer's anatomy.

The Engineers have incorporated magnetism into their FTL travel and I can only project that the additional protection of a suit is needed in this propulsion system.

The Engineer's face was burnt from a penetration of heat from this blast into the chamber he was located in. The brilliant flash above overwhelmed every protection in between the Engineer and the Prometheus explosion.

As far as the atmosphere, the Engineers seem to be stronger than humans and I can only further assume that they would be able to walk a short distance on the surface of LV-223 without issue. The trilobite was more challenging than the air quality for the Engineer though.

You're welcome Ingeniero. I forgot to mention this;

In the first alien film there was supposed to be a mural with the alien lifecycle that also depicted SJ victims. The mural was never used because they couldn't find a place for it in the derelict and because Ridley thought it would show too much (which I agree with him). There were 2 murals (both made by Giger himself) featuring victims having different "helmets" like the previous examples I showed.

In 2004 in an interview with Dixieme Planete, someone asked Giger why are there 2 murals and he said;

Q: One last question: why are two versions of the mural representing the cycle of the Alien?

GIGER: In fact, I modified the appearance of the victims because they resembled the extraterrestrial ones too much having a head of AlienI wanted to make them more human so that there is no confusion! My work on Alien is far, now, but I m happy to have contributed to create perfectly credible monster, in spite of the constraints imposed by the cinema.

Btw, while I was searching through my files I found some of photo manipulated images I recreated a year ago from Giger's concepts. Here they are:

Ingeniero - Great details again!

I know I am the only one but I don't like this elephant head helmet. :/

Nice enhancements on the Giger Engineer image Dark Nebula. Great shading. The interview details from 2004 are good too. Nice to read Giger explaining his intent associated with the drawings.

I understand Ati. I can't say I like way the helmet looks but I sure like how it sits ready to wrap the pilot's head.

@Ingeniero - I also imagined the Engineers on LV-223 were in there suits because they were under attack & were scrambling their fighter pilots to engage a yet-to-be-seen enemy?

Great post again!!

The Engineer suits are badass looking.

Nice contributions/observations Dark Nebula!

Ingeniero - I like these helmets much better. They can be seen in The Titan Find (1985):

I do like those Ati and I also thought the Weyland suits/helmets were really cool (especially in Prometheus).

What I like about the Engineer tech is that it is hard to decipher what it actually is or used for at first glance.

Ingeniero - 'really cool (especially in Prometheus)'

Totally true! Cool spacesuits used on cool 'dead' planets discovering abandoned spaceships and alien bases... Grrr... :D
