With the recent tease of the Oxygen Destroyer, I think I got enough information to predict the plot of both movies. If you're into that sort of thing, post what you think below.

Anyways:

Pressured by the Government, general public, and the awakening of 4 different monsters throughout the movie, Monarch is forced to develop a weapon against them. Much like the first movie, they want to lure the kaiju into one area to use the Oxygen Destroyer that Serizawa developed on all of them at once. However, it only succeeds in destroying King Ghidorah. Mothra and Rodan (possibly one or both is dead at the hands of King Ghidorah) escape. Furthermore, Serizawa may or may not sacrifice himself like the first Serizawa did in Gojira '54.

Godzilla, however, is adversely effected by the weapon. His radioactive core starts to meltdown; his form begins to burn.  In Godzilla vs. Kong, the Government realizes how Godzilla needs to be eliminated fast before he melts down and devastates Earth with the radioactive force of a thousand hydrogen bombs (or some other huge number of nuclear energy). So they get Kong (the only monster they think stands a chance against him), off of Skull Island and throw him at Godzilla hoping Kong would be victorious. That's when the titular fight happens.

However, the Oxygen Destroyer had another unforeseen consequence: the mutation of micro organisms. It mutates throughout the film and eventually reaches its final form: Destoroyah. Realizing this new threat, Godzilla and Kong face Destoroyah in a final battle.

Destoroyah is eventually defeated, but Godzilla is still burning. But, Kong refuses to fight him now; seeing how their fight was forced and they gain mutual respect for one another. So, the military fires freeze weapons at him as he begins to meltdown. Godzilla dies. Kong either succumbs to his injuries from the massive fight or lives to fight another day. If Serizawa is still alive at this point, he probably would retire. He (or someone else) would also probably hint that this Godzilla, while ancient, was not the last of his kind like Kong; thus fulfilling Toho's contract stipulation of "Godzilla must not completely die."

That's my instant take on the recent news anyways.

Love the fan plot, but I don't think Godzilla will die.

^^^^^^^

Godzilla Generations was a beautiful game! I loved the fact that there's a laser cannon inside of Dr. Serizawa's eyepatch.

Well, the Oxygen Destroyer isn't confirmed to be in the film for anything concrete yet. It could be an Easter Egg, a throwaway line, a foreshadowing of things to come, or a major plot element.

However, its inclusion doesn't necessarily invalidate Toho's stipulation that Godzilla not die in the MonsterVerse. In fact, its inclusion may be a blessing in disguise, as it could potentially serve as a gateway for the gradual easing in of other outlandish sci-fi concepts and ideas.

As for the OP itself, I'd say that King Ghidorah could potentially survive his encounter with Godzilla in King of the Monsters. Optimistically speaking, I think it'd be a pretty great idea to have him return in Godzilla VS. Kong. You have a ready-made threat that requires multiple monsters to beat, AND create a threat that'll require a team-up.

idk, I think I want to see Hedorah in GvK as a third monster for weird reason(Probably because GvsTSM happens to be in Adams's top 5 Godzilla films).

And the fact that the late Yoshimitsu Banno was an executive producer for Godzilla '14 and posthumous producer on Godzilla 2 doesn't hurt. I'm not in any way convinced Hedorah will show up, but it doesn't hurt its chances.

Sounds bad ass and I'd love to see the oxygen destroyer make a return. Hopefully it is somehow teased as one of Serizawas projects in GKOTM. I think it'd be cool to see him invent some new type of weapons and the government steal them to use on the monsters.

I don't wanna see Godzilla die until we get about 4-5 more movies though.

After all, the Monsterverse has made more money than the first 2 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies did if that says anything.

All right all right all right

I like the fan theory, I don't think it will go down like that at all. I see the Oxygen Destroyer being used as a way that gives Serizawa a unique back story. Maybe trying to use it releases King Ghidorah from the icy tomb.

also I would love to see Hedorah come into play. The more monsters the better!

^Is that true? Monsterverse made more money than the Marvel Universe movies? That's impressive! We are only 2 movies in.

riggzamortis68,
No, that's not true. He said the first two MonsterVerse movies made more money than the first two MCU movies. Iron Man made $585 million and The Incredible Hulk made $263 million--Both world wide grosses in 2008. So the MCU's total gross after two films was $848 million. Whereas the MonsterVerse's gross after two movies is $1.1 billion. (Godzilla $529 million, Skull Island $566 million.)

Of course we're not factoring inflation and the budgets for the MonsterVerse movies were larger, so there was an expectation for them to make more money--Especially in today's cinema climate. But as it stands, the first two MonsterVerse movies have made more money than the first two MCU movies. Not the MCU as a whole.

I don't know how much that really says today. Successful franchises are always "suppose" to beat around the $1 billion mark to be called truly successful, but I've always considered that an unrealistic expectation for most blockbusters.

Still very impressive,  some of these monsters have been around since the first years of cinema(with sound). For a monster to be racking in that kind of dough still is impressive. same goes for Godzilla, featuring in 30 movies and still bringing in new audiences for over 60 years is freaking impressive.
