First extra for the home video release for "Alien Covenant" emerges. Juggernauts appear in what it seems to be an underground hangar. Any theories about the reasons for discarding this scene? Maybe the audience would question why these starships were not used by David or by Shaw to escape the planet?

Totally... I wondered as much in the other thread.

The Hanger appeared to be similar to the one in Prometheus where we only saw ONE Juggernaught, when looking at the size of the Juggernaught and Hanger in Alien Covenant from the released official stills or stills from Trailers, it appeared to be about the right size for A Juggernaught.

Then we saw some concept work released that featured a larger bay underneath that held 3 Juggernauts and would imply another could be where the POV originated from.

Seems this deleted scene is pretty much the same.

Indeed the image shared by you is off the Hanger from Prometheus as with these.

These are concepts... there was actually a like Platform that bridged the Hanger Bay Entrance (entrance to inside) and the Juggernauts Front.

joylitt yes. I did not find a still for the clip. But I thought there were more than one juggernaut in there.

However some Prometheus concepts had more than One Ship per Hanger.

Sorry for only finding low res thumbnail... i will try and replace with full size when i find it

Here is one of Wayne Haags concept for Alien Covenant

This whole Scene on the deleted/extended section would not have taken up much time, and so potentially we have to look at other reasons for its removal apart from Pacing.

And indeed the knowledge to the viewer that Paradise had at least 3 Juggernauts would have rose a lot of Questions, regarding the Engineers response/welcome for the Juggernaught and why David never attempted to use the others

The Deleted Scenes may now not be classed as Canon and so RS/FOX could go the route to explain there was just a Empty Hanger on Paradise/Planet 4

BigDave Of course many are going to say that David didn't care for leaving the planet before he had completed his experiments. And yet, if the arrival of the Covenant was indeed a chance event, then David would have been very dumb not to use the ships.

What if the arrival of Covenant was not by chance? At the end of the movie David uses two security codes on Covenant: his own (David) when asking Mother for entry of the gods into valhalla and Walter's when reporting the mission log. Why did he use his own code if not to inform Weyland-Yutani that he took charge of the two thousands good souls? It could not be yet another 'malfunction', sort of Byron/Shelley confusion.

Another question is: when David told Oram the eggs are waiting for Mother, was he insinuating that the Covenant's computer had the secret assignment to deviate the ship to Paradise and he was actually waiting for their arrival? David did not look at all surprised to see them. Daniels as well insisted a lot in her argument with Oram that it could have been impossible to miss Paradise in their research for a new planet. What if some data was deliberately omitted / obscured by those who had  a hidden agenda with Covenant and her cargo. And there is also the prequel novel to Covenant stating about a conspiracy and attempts to stop the launching of Covenant. Can be all these put together or are just coincidences?

There is more than meets the eye in Alien Covenant. That is the gift of Sir Ridley Scott.

It also gives Walter (if still intact) a way to pursue the covenant.

daliens That's what I'm guessing. The Covenant was probably meant to go to Paradise. There are many clues about that, like you say.

Considering the new teaser "Phobos" that shows members of the crew of the USCSS Covenant being subjected to a psychological "fear" test I can only assume that they were destined for something frightful. I don't believe Fox would invest so much around Covenant story if the movie would not be important to the development of the franchise. Let's see it again and try to find why it's so important and where it can take us next. Big things have small beginnings so if some considered Covenant a small / filler movie it may be because it prepares us for something big. I hope that after the next movie Covenant will be regarded for what it is, a beautiful, dark and timeless gem.

My only concern is that by keeping things under wraps for so long, it will inevitably burden the next movie with a lot of exposition.

In the novel it says that after the payload was deployed, the Jugganauts were grounded to stop the infection getting off the planet.

My thoughts have always been that there is a decent chance David has not been on the planet for 10 years. He has been travelling to other places maybe ? It is only his words that he has been there for 10 years.

The Jugganauts not working is also from him if i remember correctly. I think David caused the event that lead to early crew revival. The crew ending up checking out Planet 4 due to this is also all part of the plan.

Take This.... This is the blood of our lord

quite plausible that each hanger could facilitate more than 1 juggernaught if say, when the ship lands it lands on a rolling landing mechanism that when the ship is secured it the rolls out the way and clears space for another mechanism for the next ship

MemberFacehuggerAug-01-2017 10:49 AM

This is confusing.  Didn't all the beings on the planet approach the Juggernaut due to them thinking they are going to see their god like visitors but it turned out to be David?

ali81

MemberNeomorphAug-01-2017 11:11 AM

to myself anyway that's what it looked like. they saw the ship but simply thought it was their gods returning to make sure they hadn't trashed the place.

Amazing. A juggernaut parking garage in the deleted scenes (enhanced).

You speak the truth daliens.

"I hope that after the next movie Covenant will be regarded for what it is, a beautiful, dark and timeless gem."

The movie gets better each time I watch it. I agree on content that Alien: Covenant showed a narrow slice of what's going on. That is the format of Paradise Lost, in medias res or "in the middle of things". I still believe Ridley Scott filmed more in 2016

Each update we get on the Alien: Origins novelization, the more I believe this. The novelization focuses on the crew and the challenges on Earth in launching the Covenant mission.

Ridley Scott mentioned in an interview that the Engineers will be in the Alien: Covenant prequel, see here. I would expect to see the moments after David 8 wiping out the Engineers in the prequel following what Scott mentioned. The updated name of the novelization of the prequel is called Alien: Covenant Origins.

He had similar sets with the Covenant ship, same actors, parallel development of a VR experience...why wouldn't Scott take advantage of having most of the resources in place in 2016 to film the prequel sequences?

Would this explain the seconds we saw Branson in Alien: Covenant?

Branson, James Franco, has a lot larger part in the prequel according to the novelization summary, see below.

The Covenant mission is the most ambitious endeavor in the history of Weyland-Yutani. A ship bound for Origae-6, carrying two thousand colonists beyond the limits of known space, this is make-or-break investment for the corporation—and for the future of all mankind.

Yet there are those who would die to stop the mission. As the colony ship hovers in Earth orbit, several violent events reveal a deadly conspiracy to sabotage the launch. While Captain Jacob Branson and his wife Daniels complete their preparations, security chief Daniel Lopé recruits the final key member of his team. Together they seek to stop the perpetrators before the ship and its passengers can be destroyed.

An original novel by the acclaimed ALAN DEAN FOSTER, author of the groundbreaking Alien novelization, Origins is the official chronicle of the events that led up to Alien: Covenant. It also reveals the world the colonists left behind.

That's great ali81. What kind of insurance are you required to carry when handling black goo and/or parking juggernauts?

Daliens, love your passion for AC and very intriguing perceptions. After watching the film on the interwebs over 20 times all I see of the crew are (one dimensional meat bags) sent to David for his agenda. The hidden message stuff is cool and I kinda dig what you're suggesting. Prometheus is the gem after the first two though, sorry. There is no way Oram is stress tested or that many of the crew are professional soldiers. Oram's symbolism is Ridley's idea that religious people are fools, imo, which pisses off many potential customers. As for this hangar scene and the hydroponic ark lab, they surely played a role to what Walter can do now that's he's left behind and maybe where David got the facehugger embryo gel balls. It's just sad seeing how the direction I liked got dumped along the way but that's life. The hidden treasures may hold up to time but the lack of quality human interaction/narrative like Alien 3 was blessed with, will not get better w time. Maybe Ridley is not all to blame for my disappointment but isn't director where the buck stops. At least we have intelligent dialogue/banter here among us humans, rant over , bowing out.

MemberXenomorphAug-01-2017 10:58 PM

Capt Torgo imo Alien Covenant is level with Alien3 with regards to quality human interaction, it has a very good script, tells a story and it is action packed. At that pace and in only 2 hours it is hard to imagine a better quality human interaction. Faith is touched in both movies, as well as in Prometheus.  I don't believe Ridley Scott considers the religious folk as fools. Remember how valuable was the cross pendant for Shaw, how David tried to strip her of faith, same thing between David and Oram. Oram, on the other hand, was raised as a religious person but he was not quite a believer as opposed to Shaw, his curiosity and awe to a luciferic David playing God were stronger than his faith. Oram was the perfectly chosen type for portraying a captain who would wreck his mission. I loved as well Prometheus, the quest for origins, the search for answers, the hope we are left with when the movie ends. But Alien Covenant I found to be much more complex and unsettling, haunting as Prometheus never was. You said yourself you watched it 20 times.

Covenant didn't get better with repeat viewings for me at least. Even if we forget about the plot's assault on the audience intelligence and on the Alien canon, I found it to be visually lackluster.  Even the props (the eggs for instance) look cheap, and the spaceship design is very uninspired, both on the inside and on the outside. The film is also lacking the layered cinematography of previous installments. To me, even lesser sci-fi movies like Event Horizon, Life and of course Prometheus, have much more visual appeal than Covenant. I hope in future movies they hire a better set designer. The absence of artists like Moebius is sorely missed. Honestly I don't get those who say Covenant is a "beautiful mess"... this has to be the ugly duckling in Ridley Scott's filmography!

SuperAlien

MemberXenomorphAug-01-2017 11:30 PM

And Capt Torgo I think the direction you liked was not dumped along the way, it is part of the big plan to make a stop first on Paradise. We may not see Shaw again but Shaw and Daniels are not vital to the story, as was with Ripley. Now they opened a whole alien universe to discover. What's eating me is the Engineers on Paradise. What was their place within the Engineer civilization? For me their welcome of the Juggernaut was like welcoming the returning troops from battles, if they returned safely must be with the good news. The Juggernaut might be their military craft, while the discoidal ship from the beginning of Prometheus might be their research/exploration craft. What about the scorpion ship?

Even if we don't get all the answers in the next movie, it has to be by Ridley Scott. I would be really disappointed if Fox would decide otherwise.

joylitt did you watch Covenant more than any other alien movies? That's the case for me. I don't remember watching a new movie so many times, except maybe for Gladiator and Prometheus, although there must have been many other good movies around. I even un intentionally learned a lot of lines from the script (except from Prometheus that I watched mostly for visuals and novelty, sometimes frame by frame).  I don't deny that I am a Ridley Scott fan, but there has to be something special about these movies.

What made you watch Covenant repeatedly, except the visuals which I get you are not thrilled with? Don't tell me that you were only looking for reasons to criticize it, I don't buy it.

daliens I really want to like it, I just can't. I am a big Ridley Scott fan too, if it would depend on me he would have several Oscars already. Blade Runner is the movie I've seen most times. But in Covenant I think he is not being himself, something seems to be off in this movie in one way or another. So many off-putting stuff, all those familiar insects on another planet and the lack of scientific curiosity of the characters... nobody ever wonders why?. As for the reasons why I watched it more than once, I would say it is because I will give every Ridley Scott sci-fi movie the same treatment. The only difference is that I will continue to watch Blade Runner, Alien and Prometheus on a regular basis, but not Alien Covenant. I want to watch the deletes scenes though...
