Domestic: $73,7 million

Foreign: $157,6 million

Worldwide: $231,3 million

/July 4, 2017/

During two weeks (between June 16 and July 2) the movie brought over 45 million in China, which is a great surprise. As a comparison, the Prometheus total box office was around 31 million there in 2012.

Alien Covenant is released in Japan in September. The big question is if it will reach the Japanese total of 20 million brought by Prometheus five years ago.

Nice! That is a pleasant surprise from China, especially considering how heavily censored it was there, from what I understand.

If it reaches 260 million, we'll get the sequel, I think... I hope...

@Ati

Well, what about merchandise sales, do they count for anything? Man, I hope we get that sequel. I've already seen it in theaters 5 times! The rest of my money is going to merch.

Ati

MemberPraetorianJul-02-2017 3:45 PM

ViviEngi - Yes, I don't know much about that, but members here claim that the real business is the money coming from the merch sales.

MemberChestbursterJul-02-2017 3:50 PM

I've been buying tons of merch so I hope it helps :)

I think the Asian Markets may Save AC skin...

I wondered a while back if these markets could take the movie between $220-250M Mark but i felt a lot would depend on China... as i felt Japan would have taken it to about $210-220M mark

I would expect now that AC will have a Final Box Office of about $250M  which means it would have about Broken Even.

I think this is better news for a Sequel but i feel a Sequel was gonna happen anyway.. i just hope RS/FOX learn from their mistakes and also invest more of a Budget and Time.

But this is he tricky part... figure why AC did not attract as much as Prometheus did.  I think FOX Genuinely thought this movie would do better than Prometheus.

A conservative estimate is I have spent enough on merch to see AC in my local theater at least 14 times. That should count for their bottom line at least some.

It's starting to hit dollar theaters around the country as well, so it should get a small domestic boost from that.

@Ati - Not merchandise sales. The real money comes from the home video sales, streaming, and broadcast sales. Theatrical is typically a money loser, but a necessity to promote the movie.

Good news, thanks Ati.

As far as Japan goes, some of it depends on how many that liked Prometheus. If most of those that watched it were disappointed then it might be difficult but we will see about that.

Having a sequel to Alien Covenant is important otherwise it would feel like having a story where we would just know 2/3rds of it. They should at least do one more movie until we get to what happened in Alien.

I did what I could for them to do a sequel, I have watched it three times in the movie theater.

If this was 230 million domestic; we will be in another installment territory at this time.  Remember, the studio took in 36 million stateside and 1/3 from foreign receipts.  That is about another 51 or 52 million.  That amounts to about 88 million out of 97 million for its production budget.  Mucho millions went into advertising that is not part of that 97 million.  Merchandising is also a portion of what is being sold at retail.  But I do not thing Alien toys are so big now and days lol  With the hopes of Japan, money will come in from DVD/Blu-ray sales and on-demand.  I do believe it will break even in the near future and profits will come years down the road.  My buddy had me hysterical yesterday because it said he got away from some fan sites.  People (actually grown-men) fighting over if Superman is better than Batman lol.  He says people take fandom a little bit too seriously lol.  And I do seem some of those types on this site.

Can you give some examples? You don’t have to if you don’t want to but what you wrote is interesting.

It is fine to be interested in movies and to discuss what ever about it I just don’t like when people get fanatical about it or when people just live for movies. There is a difference between having an interest and to be fanatical about something (like you live your life for that hobby).

Don't forget people I think it's inevitable we are getting a sequel no matter what pans out money-wise from here on out.

What I mean is if this move terribly underperformed Fox might of said it's cooked.

Its made a profit and it's like gambling.

Im sure Fox  is that nking the next one may hit the jackpot.

There is always that possibility one of these ALIEN movies could be huge.

@colonialsoldier & Thoughts_Dreams

The reason people get into heated arguments over fandoms is closely related to the reason people attend horror movies in the first place.

Not regrettably, most people's day to day lives in first world countries are paradisiacal compared to what we've evolved to deal with, so we have a vestigial urge to experience fright, disgust and enmity.

Only, we'd all prefer to experience those emotions in contexts where deep down, we know the threat is illusory.

Grown men like to defend and attack Batman and Superman because defending and attacking is part of human instinct.

If nothing of genuine importance to an individual is under real threat, we will take the luxury of forming a new sense of attachment or antipathy towards inconsequential things that we can attack and defend.

Just like going to horror movies, haunted houses, or amusement park rides. People enjoy loosing themselves in the moment and experiencing their range of emotions, and then stepping away and remembering that none of it was real in the first place.

colonialsoldier you may be right, sometimes we forget to enjoy a show because we can't figure out who created the xenos and what is the origin of the pathogen. However, some great minds are working on the issue and as soon as everything is clear the Batman vs. Superman story will be dealt with. Many tried to get away from this fan site but as it happened to you and me, they returned looking for the news. We are hooked, man. Not a map, an invitation.

What merchandise is currently available other than the novel and couple of making of art/photo books (all of which I have)?  Are there any officially licensed shirts, etc?

VivisectedEngineer

MemberChestbursterJul-04-2017 8:40 AM

@Unadan

Me and my husband and my sister and my friends are all wearing Weyland-Yutani: Covenant shirts to my birthday!!!

...Also, I wound up buy two copies of the novel, because my friend loved Covenant but hadn't read the novel so I insisted she had to read it and gifted her my copy.

But like...two days later I bought myself a knew one.

I think there will also be a general uptick in sales for all Alien related merchandise.

There's some pretty cool Prometheus merch out there, like a Dr. Shaw action figure that comes with David's severed head.

I'm looking forward to my birthday because I know all my gifts are going to be Alien related. I especially want that "Making of" book, though. Thinking off just buying and wrapping it for myself in case no one gives it to me, lol.

@VivisectedEngineer

Love your profile pic :) Also the Art and Making of is astounding lol There's a lot of fun tid bits, nice art and photography work, and a lot of insight into the movie and franchise. Hope you get it for your birthday! I'm wanting to pick up some of the figures now from Neca (like the cute Neomorph scaler) and some Funkos.

Thanks Lawrence of Arabia! Figured it was time for a profile pic, lol. Oh man, that book sounds great...I am probably just going to order it on Amazon. If I wind up with two, I'll similarly foist the extra one onto a friend to enhance our range of conversational topics, like I did with the novel.

Just found the neomorph scaler! It's not for straws, is it? I wish I could find something like that, to put on our straws at the party.

@Unadan

Awesome! We got the black shirts too! We're wearing them to a crashed-spaceship-themed escape room!

@dk

That's very cool too!

I also saw a bunch of chestburster shirts, some were like an x-ray showing a chestburster inside and some with like...a picture of the chestburster bursting out with blood and all. I'm definitely gonna get one or two of those.

My guess or assumption is 25% of China is $11 million take home, then roughly $190 million global not China at ,40-50% =$90 million take home so $103m +half of $20 m Japan is $12ish so my rough(generous math) guess is $115 to $105 million studio take before dvd streaming services/income. Who knows what was spent on marketing but maybe they are kinda close to break even or edge of slight profit right now. Bet they hoped for a better showing but is what it is. Will Scott get the chance or sign up for another adventure? I'll be waiting anxiously for the reviews

People might have instincts but then we also have to wonder if what ever it might be about is that important to invest that much interest in. I don’t think that a movie is that important. You mention fright disgust what ever and I am sure that it might have got something to do with why some people watch these movies but you can experience these emotions when you watch the movie but to get that invested in it so you get annoyed or angry when someone has an opposing view about it is just strange, it is just a movie. My point is, choose what you react heavily to, from an objective point of view a movie doesn’t make sense to get up in arms for. From my stand-point it just gets a bit silly when people get that heated by discussion a movie because it isn’t like life depends on it but I see what you mean. I say this in a respectful way and I don’t want to ridicule your opinion.
