Domestic: $73 million

Foreign: $155 million

Worldwide $228 million

/Jun. 27, 2017/

Opening weekend in China brought 30 million which is a great news – we expected half of it.

Will we see the same pattern with 20 million in Japan in September?

Not bad. I mean, it could be better but overall not bad. :)

Now we wait for Japan.

"The global world market place is changing…entertainment looks attractive when you read about the few films that makes these insane amount of money, but what they (investors) don't know is that they don't always do that. There's a level going about it on the business side, and that's not necessarily the box office. If it does fine in the box office, that's OK. But - it will play for years on television, reissuing DVDs…and so on, and so on. So there is an industry just in that…a lot of the revenue comes in from that over the years…The important thing to do is make it." - Ridley Scott 2012

Does this mean we'll get a sequel?? I REALLY hope so.

I stopped by the theater today to see if I could watch Covenant while I waited for my car to get worked on in the shop - but it wasn't playing at my local theater any more, sadly.

I did see it four times in theater already, though. I learned that the ticket sales guy had watched Prometheus in theater six times.

So whatever we lack in numbers we fans more than make up for in dedication.

This was an awesome movie, and to all the haters out there: You just don't understand the lonely perfection of Ridley Scott's dreams. :)

Those numbers still look awful. Covenant got the second worst box office numbers of the whole series. And for a reason. The movie is bad.

Kethol

MemberChestbursterJun-24-2017 7:51 AM

Definitely not "bad". Just not as good as it should have been because Ridley decided to change direction to appease the xeno whiners.

I don't like the Ridley who does this when criticized:

"…Because everyone said 'I missed the Alien'. I said, really? And I said, ookaaayy (rolling his eyes). So I came back on…So I thought we had better include it and try it out, so this (Covenant) is the trail run"..."I think you’re not sensible if you don’t actually take [the fans’ reaction] into account."

I liked the old Ridley who use to say things liked this when criticized:

"I don't make films for other people. I make films for me...So there's a great expression, 'f**k you very much'."

And what if Ridley Scott will not take the fan reaction (engineer whiners) into account and just develop further the David story, how would you like that? Stop whining, this has done a lot of damage to the box office already And it is no better than the chinese censorship. This franchise has the most exigent critics all of a sudden, lot of fan art, fan script, everybody can do better than Ridley Scott. And Ridley Scott just left enough to be developed in the next movies, just have a little patience.

That would be awesome. Keep going with the David and Engineer story, or give us a prequel that actually continues where Prometheus left off. The Prometheus fans are who they should have listened to.

And that would be John Logan, not Ridley. Ridley may help steer the ship, but he and Fox hire writers to actually write these stories.

Am I the only one who truly enjoyed Covenant? It was an unconventional sequel to Prometheus but I felt it was natural, especially considering now that we are getting closer to the back door of Alien. I love the Alien movies and Prometheus, idk, I thought it was pretty cool. Covenant embodied everything about the franchise so I'm not getting the hate. The crews decisions aside (which I felt was real, these people may be scientists but they're fallible people, foolishly optimistic ones at that) and the weird Lope facehugger (which I think has to do with it being a prototype which still needs modifying) I thought it was a great film. Love the David storyline, best character in the franchise by far imo. I can't wait till the Blu-ray comes out to watch the commentary lol

If Japan does well, and i think a greater % of Japanese will see the movie compared to the Chinese... but we need remember China has a larger population.

But indeed if Japan makes that kind of Money then the movie would break even i think.... i cant understand why Japan had to wait for September... the release Schedule is one of the things that Damaged this Franchise.

I think if the Movie came out in Europe and North America the Same weekend or a Week Apart with the Premier no longer than a week before USA release... Then other Markets had the movie up to a Month later i would think AC would had been past the $250M mark for certain by now maybe even pushing $300M

As for a sequel i think its on the Cards... but a lot could be changed due to reception of AC....

As far as RS goes, he has the ideas but he gets writers in to bring those to Life in a draft and also change some parts.. then RS and FOX will look what needs changing for a Shooting Script and then RS will then Put this to Screen.

He can often change things as he goes along when Shooting a Movie and so things get omitted or replaced compared to how the Final Drafts looked.  He is very Spontaneous and sometimes this can be good but sometimes bad.

No, you aren't. :)

So, I guess it is looking like the box-office numbers will leave Covenant just about breaking even. Which is a little better than a lot of people were expecting (I think.)

Then, as Kethol said with that first quote, the game has changed. There is a lot of money to be made in the long run with TV, streaming, Blu-ray (and what not), etc.

I can't be sure, but with the way this franchise has been treated so far, I am expecting a sequel to this no matter what, really, so now I can only hope that Ridley and Fox put a little bit less of an emphasis on fan reaction and just make the absolute ebest movie possible.

cuponator3000 - I agree with you. But the absolute movie needs a lot of money. If Fox does not see that, they're blind.

Glad you liked it Kethol and really sorry you have to whine about "bug" fans wanting Ridley to tell a decent story. The general public spoke to which one can't ignore, sorry again. As Joylitt says and I agree, it's a great looking and sounding film with very bad characters and storytelling. The actors in both prequels are fine it's that Sir Ridley gives them aweful speaking and terrible decision making. I think fans will see someday that a competent director can have Xenomorphs and an intelligent plot mixed in. Maybe some actual suspense or even horror. Hoping Ridley either sees the light or hands the keys off.

SuperAlien

MemberXenomorphJun-24-2017 12:23 PM

I hope you realize the damage done by James Cameron with his Aliens as since then some people started to call the xenomorph a "bug". No wonder that Blomkamp was considered to continue the franchise at some point after his prawns from District 9. I am glad Ridley stepped in and even if he considered the beast is cooked he did it some justice. After all, it was feared even by engineers, only the dumb colonial marines could call it a "bug". It is hard to get past the Aliens fuck up. That should be removed from the franchise. Just watch it again, after A:C and see the difference.

Ah, so you are one of those bug whiners? :) And I loved the story.

"Sir Ridley gives them aweful speaking and terrible decision making"

I think you mean John Logan, the writer? The actors speak the lines in the script. Ridley directs the scenes in the script.

Lawrence of Arabia Cheers, mate. I am glad you enjoyed it and speak openly about it. I haven't see it yet, but by all means I trust Ridley Scott on this one. So you are not the only one, only that the critics are always louder and they seem to be many. I am not ready for the announced war of worlds if that may be the end of the franchise, I want at least two more movies from Ridley Scott and him alone.

I tried to see it again today.....would have been my 5th showing...but it was gone!

Going to really miss watching it on the BIG screen.

@Capt Torgo and @Joylitt........Are you going to buy it on DVD/Bluray?

joylitt

MemberNeomorphJun-24-2017 4:50 PM

MonsterZero It is sad to admit, but Covenant doesn't work for me even on the visual  level. It sorely lacks the "awe factor" that is fundamental for a space movie to put you in outerspace. I rewatched Danny Boyle's "Sunshine" the other night, and I found the visual aspects of that movie to be much more accomplished than those of Covenant. And I don't like how Ridley Scott has embraced the digital effects this time around: it killed the atmosphere and the soul of this film. And I am not even going to start talking about the story, all this grand guignol crossover involving David. This is not what an Alien movie is supposed to be. So no, I might not be buying the blu ray.

MemberXenomorphJun-24-2017 4:55 PM

Joylitt, Okay.    I just think this franchise is going to need support from all it's fans. Good or bad movies are going to happen. Maybe the next one will work for you? But I fear we'll never know.

MonsterZero I supported the film by going to the movie theater :-) I would agree with the poster who said that we are hyper critical of the Alien movies. And this is because the first two movies set the bar pretty high. We expect at least an immersive experience, good characters and a high stakes story. When Prometheus came along, we got a promise of a bigger scope, and even though the characters were stupid, it made it possible for the franchise to go in a lot of interesting directions. Covenant seemed to have taken the least interesting path though. I hope the studios understand this is not the case where a franchise has been milked so much that the audience lost interest. This is the case where there has been a misstep which needs to be corrected. I have the impression that if they make some surveys targeting both the fanbase and the general audience, they will find out exactly what went wrong. But they need to ask the right questions.

Covenant was more of a set-up of things to come. The marriage of Alien and Prometheus (which was already the marriage of Alien and Blade Runner but I digress). Covenant had a great story of Paradise Lost, Frankenstein (The Modern Prometheus), and of a pilgrimage. Ridley had planned to introduce the Alien mythos later but I guess decided now was a better time than any. I feel like people need to be more patient. The characters make dumb decisions but when it's least expected it makes sense. The people being "stupid" is a minor issue that is being made into a mountain imo. The Covenant said the planet was safe and hospitable to humans, so why wear the masks? Cuz of evil pathogens (which the ship should've detected but didn't) that they had no idea of? We as the audience are aware but not the characters. I guess everyone in Star Wars is stupid for not always wearing protective gear on alien planets (Dagobah for example). While I watching Covenant for the first time, it was a great film full of suspense and terror (I wasn't totally scared cuz I've seen a ton of horror films but I felt the dread). I feel like Covenant is being unfairly hated. Yes it has its flaws but so did Alien and Aliens guys. Let Ridley finish his story before jumping the gun, we'll get our answers.

Lawrence of Arabia Why borrow from "Frankenstein" and "Paradise Lost" when you already have the seeds of an original Mythology in "Alien" (1979), and even in "Prometheus"? That is what I find so disappointing... trade something original for something we have seen too many times already.

Maybe because Ridley Scott wanted to give us at least two more movies? What is wrong with that?

Joylitt: It sort of depends on how you look at it. You can compare it to how much money it cost to make it and look at how much profit it has gained this far or you can compare it to how much the other movies did. Me, I look at how much it cost to make and to market so with that considered it looks like it makes a decent amount of money. For or against I think that it is interesting that a franchise that has been around for so long still has people discussing the movies being them for or against. All Alien movies are not good, I don’t appreciate Alien Resurrection or Alien Versus Predator a lot and even Aliens has things that are not that good. To me AC has things that could have been a lot better but it is far from being the worst Alien related movie.

AC isn’t awful in my opinion but it could have been much better. Compared to the other Alien related movies I would say that it is better than some but defiantly not the best. One thing that I dislike is that it is too slow in parts and even though I didn’t want a clone of Aliens there were parts where it was just too slow.

Kethol: They should have gotten the characters better even though they were better compared to Prometheus. I think that it is good that they kept it closer to the Xenos. Unfortunately, it was a little too much focus on the Artificial Intelligence aspect even though I think that Fassbender did an interesting job and that it was fun to compare Walter and David. Maybe there is a reason for this but they could have reduced the AI part.

Daliens: I think that it is good that he listened to the critics because a pure Engineer and David movie would have been boring as hell. Sure there is a small possibility that they could have made that work but I doubt it. Prometheus was a disappointment to me. There are many different parts in this franchise just look at the difference between Alien and Aliens and that there are different fans that watch these two movies. No matter what they try will always be people that get disappointed but it is good that they listened to some of it. Even though Alien Covenant isn’t perfect it is at least alright and a lot better compared to Prometheus.

Thoughts_Dreams I think it would be more interesting to explore the engineers 's world in ruins, like visiting Pompeii, eventually to find a couple of engineers in the cryosleep, like in Prometheus. To find their way of creating the xenos, where the pathogen comes from. I would prefer to see the engineer 's world without engineers. I don't know, it doesn't seem ok to see a lot of engineers playing the flute or else.

If there will be a war of the worlds would be good to be briefly presented, all engineers wiped out except one who will crash his ship on LV_426. Better to learn about the engineers' ways than to see too much of them in person.

I think this Thread shows the Tough Task to try and please everyone... the Franchise has taken so many twist and turns and changes in direction that its opened up the Fanbase to view each movie in the Franchise in a different way.

So its become very Polarizing.

I think they need 3 Movies, to try and please the fans but its who do they cater for first?

I think we need a movie that will show us seeds of the Company and maybe underhanded tactics and inner conflict, this brings a new Scope to the Prequels.  One where AI is maybe explored more..   And so to continue Davids Story but then also bring back some of the more Alien Horror to this movie rather than a ALIENS movie.... then bring in the Engineers loosely at the end as a party who sets off to Prevent David's miss-use of the Xenomorph, and to attempt to clear up and eradicate all access to LV-223.

Then have the Engineers come in to try and prevent this and ultimately have this lead to the Space Jockey.

If  this is done over TWO movies then ONE could cater for the Aliens Action Fans... If not.... then once a movie ties to Alien... I think the ALIENS Fans deserve a Sequel to Aliens or indeed a Parallel story that revolves around the Xenomorph maybe located prior to Alien and so on Origae-6 to give a more Action based Flick.

Then its a case of would FOX feel another movie to explore the Engineers be something to interest a lot of Fans? Prometheus Fans certainly and maybe Alien Franchise Fans would be interested in finding out the Purpose and Agenda behind the Race that would create the Evil Biology that gave rose to the Xenomorph.

Sadly for FOX its hard to Gauge where to take movies and invest $$$$ without risking not making a Good Return.

The Prequel Novel sounds interesting... it again is misleading Title Alien: Origins... yet looks to not even tackle anything related much to the Xenomorph.. but be more about the Covenant Mission and why and also underhanded Tactics, Sabotage by different factions within the whole Corporate Background of Weyland-Yutani

60% of my Prometheus 2 tackled this kind of Plot... and why such a Story as the Prequel Novel may be a interesting part of the Franchise...  FOX would maybe not make it into a Movie because they would not want to take the risk that such a Movie doing justice visually and having a  Budget to pull off the Prequel Novel on screen to make it look Great... Would be RISKY as far as how many people would go and see it so the movie Breaks Even.. or even better.

i dont think FOX backs Movies to Break Even, and i think if the next Alien Movie struggles to Break Even it could mean FOX could abandon hope of doing any more for a Long time... where they may then go the Sequel set years after Alien Resurrection, or indeed after Aliens.. or even Reboot the Franchise... but not for many many years (15-20+)

If the next Alien Movie struggles that is.
