I think its disappointing but fingers crossed it can break the $200M i feel the reception has not been to good and as we wont be seeing a $250M+ Return it raises TWO concerns.

1) The next will be have a even less Budget and will be used to Wrap up the Prequel Connections to Alien... no more Prequels after the next.

2) They will consider backing some money in the next one, maybe even increase the Budget but at the cost of making a decision to bring in a Direct Ripley Connection via at least a Younger Ripley and God Forbid a older one.

Dave -- Let's imagine a scenario in which the movie brings 20 million in China and 2-3 (domestic) million a week from now on and this lasts until the end of summer, then the movie opens in Japan in September with plus 20 million... and we'll have 250 million. Would it work? Could it work?

The movie has yet to break even. China's pretty much its last hope.

@GH exactly.  It just made about 2 million in foreign markets over the weekend.

For the poorly received The Mummy, it did do well in China with 52 million in box office.  Let's see if China is going to go bonkers over Covenant.

I am just waiting to see 20th Century Fox's announcement that they scrapped the plans for a Ridley Scott sequel to Covenant and that they are moving forward with the production a proper Alien movie.

Disappointing. I really want a decent follow up to AC. The less it makes, the worse movie we will probably get....

It might make AVPR look great...

So much pessimism! Geez, enough already.

Don't forget about Japan.

DVD pre-sales, soundtrack sales/downloads, novels and NECA Toys - The franchise is healthy, especially for one that heavily relies on its loyal fans. The core task at hand is getting average moviegoers into the theater for the next one, most likely just one more prequel.

Fox will need to increase the budget for an A-lister or two and to have ADF write the screenplay.

Maybe it's best if there's just one more Ridley prequel film anyway. RS seems to be losing fans with what he's doing lately, there's quite a lot of negativity toward him.

If FOX back one more film of Ridleys and it involves living Engineers (and some more depth to their story possibly) and is a decent, believable enough connect to the original ALIEN I think this prequel project as a whole may not be looked on too harshly when the dust settles.

sadly Tdby money talks. If the film doesn't make money the chances of us all getting a sequel anytime soon go down the toilet.

Is there any way to account for the money that will be coming in from VOD/streaming sources once the movie is available for home viewing?

AdminTrilobiteJun-13-2017 5:29 AM

There are other factors outside of money Fox will consider when looking at a prequel, but overall this doesn't bode well.

I also wouldn't expect Japan to be much help. I'm not entirely sure how viable the Alien franchise is over there, but given they don't typically like a lot of Hollywood movies (or darker films) I'd be surprised if it make more than $10 million (give or take). I'll let you know.

China would be a more likely helper.

The funny thing is, when you look at critical reviews and posts they're extremely similar. Usually something along the lines of "Ridley Destroyed his own universe"
"Dumbest characters ever" (even though a lot of the dumb things were done in Alien and Aliens as well)

"Ridley pulled a George Lucas"

"The new chestburster has horrible CGI and looks like its about to dance."

"Gay android and flutes"

"Ridley Scott is a senile hack"

"Ridley Scott should be in a nursing home"

Most of the criticisms are personal attacks on Ridley Scott. I think it's fair to say that a lot of the negativity surrounding this movie is due to a popular narrative getting established on social media. Something you could ball a "bubble" (see this video at 1:23 for a definition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JEk5jIEf_U )

As big fan of Alien (but not of the "extended universe"), I just have to say I'm disappointed in the reactions. This movie hit most of the right spots for me, and I thought those spots were general to Alien fans, but maybe most of us/you are more of the AvP sort...

@Barf the Mog THANK you for being the voice of reason ITT. This INTENTIONAL, passive-aggressive pessimism is getting ridiculous. There's the "I want this to fail because I said it would" crowd against the true fans, who only want to see "more Alien!" (count me in!).

It is disappointing but I will probably watch it again tomorrow because I like the movie in general.

Well its a bit of a mess really, and the whole Fanbase has a lot of different opinions and expectations its just hard to please them all.  With AC we had..

*Prometheus Fans who are disappointed in the lack of answers and they was looking forwards to those and felt that AC just took the Hicks/Newt route with the Engineers and Dr Shaw

*Alien Fans who would be disappointed this movie did not bring back what made ALIEN  Great there was no real Tense Horror Elements, it did not Scare the %£^£$ out of people and really only the Neomorph Back Burster Scene came close to giving what Alien had.

*Aliens Fans who thought we would see more Xenomorphs and Action and Ultimately the Action was not even on the same level as Alien Resurrection.

*Had Aliens Fans upset at the lack of Xenomorph and how the Origins are explained... SO What there is no Queen! etc

*Had Alien Fans upset also at how the Xenomorph Origins seem to be handled as well as the Gestation/Growth Rates.

*Had Prometheus Fans upset too about the Origins, as they would have wanted to see more on the Engineers role in all this.

RS/FOX Toned down the Engineers and Shaw, and for Prometheus fans this was a let down, for General Fans maybe some felt this was a Good Direction and for some they may even had wondered why  they needed to touch upon Prometheus and be about David the Robot.

RS/FOX Felt bringing in the ALIEN and Eggs, Face Huggers etc would please Fans... but they way it was handled had disappointed some Prometheus, Alien and Aliens fans and ULTIMATELY did not do the Trick.

so it leaves FOX to wonder now...

*Do we change the Curve-ball about David creating the Eggs to he recreated it, and thus his Eggs dont end up in Alien... but then surely some fans would want other answers to the Space Jockey Event and how do they then do this? surely they cant keep it a Mystery now.

*Do we Cover the Engineers so that we can gauge what their purpose is and what Paradise was and LV-223 etc etc.. but then do they worry other Franchise Fans want to know less about these beings and this would put them off the Franchise.

*Do we go the Aliens Route and so turn the Covenant into a Hadleys Hope in Space with numerous Xenomorphs and maybe even a Queen. But i dont think this is what RS would want and it would only appease  40-50% of the Fanbase

ULTIMATELY...

They have a tricky situation and have to Gauge which route would please the most fans... but Ultimately also which would make the most $$$$

Sadly if the General Public are more in Tune with ALIENS and a majority of the Fanbase like Aliens and have no Problems with the Queen route and also if they are not Prometheus Fans.

Then i think FOX will simply be FORCED to Bring Ripley into the Franchise and Hope this works.. and if this does not then the FRANCHISE will be DEAD.

As far as Movies goes, as FOX just wont risk it again..

Well Prometheus did 30 million in China in 2012.  I know it's not listed on Box office mojo, but if you do a little googling you can find it.  Also Japan did just over 20 million, so even if you go worse case which I think and half the total for both.  That's still an additional 25 million.  Based on the increase in the Asia Markets however it may do equal or better.  However the way I heard the hacked up the China cut of the film it might not do so well.

BigDave "I hope that the only AWAKENING we are in for is FOX/RS wake up and learn from their mistakes."

Exactly. A sequel in the line of Covenant with more Fassbender as a protagonist will only sink the franchise further.

Starlogger

MemberChestbursterJun-13-2017 1:35 PM

@joylitt I'm gonna have to agree with you on that last sentence. I love Fassbender, but I'm tired of the whole "AI is God" thing...

Thoughts_Dreams

MemberNeomorphJun-13-2017 1:53 PM

Starlogger: OK but then there is the question what kind of enemy that you replace Fassbender with or if the enemies shall be Fassbender and something else. I don't claim to have a very thought out answer about this.

For it to make $100 million in profit it would have to do somewhere between $294-342 million worldwide. At its current $181 million worldwide, that is a long haul. I doubt China will make up that much.

Like BigDave said,"...it did not Scare the %£^£$ out of people...".  Ridley Scott said in an interview about Covenant, "This movie is going to scare the $*!# out of people."  Guess what!  It didn't.  Not even close.  I was seriously let down based off of how Ridley Scott advertised the movie!  Look!  I like the Alien franchise, but I also expect to feel scared and be caught in the mystery that is the Alien universe.  Prometheus had scarier parts than Alien: Covenant!  The only reason I say Alien: Covenant is scarier is because the whole movie almost always maintains a type of suspense.  Prometheus wasn't as exciting throughout the movie as Covenant, but I still enjoyed the slower parts because the movie had amazing visuals and a great mysterious story.  There were some other things BigDave said about what people didn't like about Covenant that I fall in too, like Points #1 & #6.
