Alien Covenant is not easy to recommend to friends.

So as it turns out, most people I know who saw Covenant think it's a throw away movie that doesn't feel coherent and relies too heavily on Fassbender.

This has left me feeling justified in not recommending it to people as it is now more than clear than ever that it's not something most people I know would be happy with paying theater prices for.

I'm curious as to whether this is widespread or not. What is your experience. Have you had more people come back and thank you for suggesting it? Or have you had more people regret dropping the money for the big screen experience?

I think the reaction is mixed. Alien fans are disappointed because David can't possibly be the creator of the xenomorph and that everything happens a bit too quickly (otherwise it's a very good story). As I went to see the movie for the second time, I brought a couple of friends (who are not Alien fanatics) and they enjoyed it - they were excited. I think that Alien fans will come to appreciate the movie in due course (also with extended/deleted scenes).

My hope is that they get to release the next (2-3) movies a bit quicker than 5 years per movie!

I think the movie is probably better for non-Alien nerds (like most of us on this forum).

AC does tell a (somewhat questionable) story, characters are fairly developed, there is some pretty good suspense action and more than a little blood and gore.  Additionally, Ridley lets fans to continue to explore his crazed AI Theorems from Blade Runner in the form of David 8...

Me, I still am too emotionally attached to all the plot holes to fully appreciate all the good stuff from the movie...

I would recommend it to somebody who just wants to watch a good flick and not over analyze everything....

I actually took 2 friends with me who weren't really alien fans. 1 saw prometheus for the first time right before we left. Their general opinions were that it was ok, to pretty fun. One said he was happy he saw it.

I think that for all the mess A:C has it has enough fun moments once they land that they can keep the casual person interested. I think it's something that might appeal to a nonfan who just wants fun more than a story(like prometheus).

Not easy to sell this one. Even if Covenant was close to Blade Runner (which is not!), that movie, being my all time favorite, is one that I haven't been able to have my relatives sit and watch. Ripley is what sold the Alien saga to the general audience. I have no idea why Fox and Scott have neglected the "human" aspect of their films so much.

I really don't get all the hate and criticism around Alien Covenant. I was enjoying reading this site before the release of the movie, but now I cannot read it any longer. You can recommend your friends to see Wonder Woman, i bet they will enjoy it dearly. I hope RS will be so pissed off by you clever Aliens fans and let James Cameron send his favourite marines take care of David and save the Engineers. Ripley, Newt and Hicks included.

@daliens. My wife and daughter dragged me to Wonder Woman this past Saturday.

I was pleasantly surprised and I did enjoy it. Good solid movie that gave us a unique perspective on our interpretation of "heroine"

I know it fired my daughter up something fierce...

Good post

I've taken 3 friends to 2 viewings

Viewing 1 with a sci-fi friend, he liked it however he was critical of a few minor items, pretty much the same minor items as me.

Viewing 2 with 2 none sci-fi friends, they both really liked it and got more out of it, as they didn't know what to expect, they were entertained for 2 hours

Ive also recommended it to others and received positive and neutral feedback

Pretty positive overall in my camp

@daliens Well said. It's not as much fun on here anymore after the general release.

That said, my wife enjoyed A:C much better than she thought she would, but wouldn't really want to see it again. She's not an Alien fan. BUT, I wouldn't have any problem recommending it to any reasonable film fan.

Well you folks can tell from the title that this thread is not a "worship at the feet of Covenant" . QueenE.S. is beating a dead horse as I will join in too. Wonder woman is probably great because it actually tells a coherent story. Told my sister it was a stinker but my buddy loved it although his cheap butt watched the pirated version. Half the film is so dark you can't see any of the sets plus a lot of sets were never even in the film like the Walter birth, Daniels apartment and others. Im sure wonder woman has its unbelievable moments but who talks like captain Oram saying "I saw the devil as a child and I will mess up your perfect posture"? That is absolute garbage and I'm sure it's Ridley over thinking things as he has a much bigger say in the script/characters than people think. I'll give him one more film but not two or three. This is not a soap opera or TV series. The domestic audience has declared this a bad movie here in the states. If that hurts your feelings then I dont know what to tell you. However I will stick to threads like this and will try not to goo bomb this whole seating picking on Covenant.

I would recommend it, personally.  But, I'm the type of person that would mention that it's more of a gore/action movie and without the big ideas like Prometheus tried to portray.  I'd also be tempted to say, "don't expect ANY answers to the mysteries of Alien at all"... but I guess that would spoil it.  It was worth the money to see it, and I am an Alien fan.

My experience (still haven't seen it) has oddly been this- story time:

I talked up Prometheus back in the day for a fair weather fan and was kind of meh when she saw it. I saw her at work a week ago and she was all "Did you see Covenant yet?! It is great!" And I was like, "um.....no. Not yet."

It was nice to see a casual fan become a fan!

I have to ask everyone: if Prometheus never existed and covenant came out as the long awaited alien/ridley movie (minus obvious plot probs), would it have been more enjoyable? Cuz I feel like everyone wanted the best of both worlds (covenant+Prometheus), and that appears impossible. FYI I liked covenant enough to see twice.

Looks like a stirred mess which tried to please Alien and Prometheus fans. In the end neither was pleased.

Reasons were plot holes, illogical character design and a thrown away Engineer,Dr.Shaw,Human origins story arc.

Chipperdoo1 If Prometheus never existed this would still be a bad movie.

Queen - Excellent topic.  I wrote the same thing in a post and ATI responded in kind.

'I just do not want to get blamed for people wasting their money.'

So the solution from now on is that you bash every movie, in this way every buddy and friend of yours can save a lot of money.

I responded that it is simply positive or negative word of mouth that will generate repeat viewings.  I saw Wonder Woman twice already.  That movie had a coherent story that was great to follow.

Joylitt, once again shooting laser beams of painful truth via your fingertips ! I could almost cry it's just so upsetting. As chipperdoo1 asked, I do think you could have melded them both but Ridley does not have the talent to see a path for that great story. He's too focused on his agenda of David, Walter and stupid dialogue or lack there of. Nobody bothers to ask who are these people at the Necropolis. I honestly think an ape could make a better film, sorry
