Indeed... pretty much similar to how i interpret things, but my interpretation is that David was disappointed with his Creator, being that Mankind are not as superior to him, and how despite this Mankind that he had interacted with saw him as well just a Robot...

David was thus interested in meeting our Creators, to see if they are any better than us, because Weyland is not a GOD, not technically and he sees Mankinds Flaws...  Compared to the more Superior Androids.

So David finds the Engineers Interesting, they created Mankind, they have Advanced Technology a Superior Species No Doubt. (as David puts it).

David however finds these Gods are Mortal After-all... but David is still interested in them, he has a power that Weyland does not in that David is the one who is the Go-Between between his Creator and his creators Creators... a Ambassador.

David was bewildered by the Engineer, when the Engineer placed his hands on David, David felt a kind of Acceptance... but then this turned to his destruction... well his head coming off.

This would indeed upset David, and he would realize that actually all these Engineers have that David does not is Purely More Physical Strength ... apart from this... David is Immortal and they are not, and with all the Engineers Technology then David is the GOD and he sees the Engineers loosing control of their own Creation, like they also did with Mankind and seeing that Mankind can not create its own Creation David.

David will feel these Humanoids are flawed, and do not deserve to exist...   So David wishes to play GOD and Create and create Perfection that will not have the Flaws of the Engineers Creation Attempts, and Mankinds...

To Create something that he can Control, in a way that the Engineers could not do with Mankind, and the Black Goo and also what Mankind could not do with David.

Man, I would love to have David encounter a Chimeran...

I'd planned such in ALIEN: Manticore; Paradise but that idea is now no longer possible.
They have their own quite distinct view on Creators and those who are Created.

NOW, sooner or later, the Engineers are gonna find out about the city on Paradise being bombed with one of their own weapons...and they are doubtlessly going to be very active in seeking answers...

IN SPACE THERE IS NO WARNING

Very disappointed with the way Covenant was presented. Barely ANY Engineer content! (The only highlight is the interesting David vs. Walter dilemma.) He brought back the Alien in such a rushed way that I felt Scott was purposely screwing us over. Has he gone senile? Every interview he does he contradicts himself and jumbles around.

Is the old man mumbling again? Let's see how long 'til he changes his mind ... this time.

I'll only go for what is shown in the movies and written in the books from now on. IMO that's where the story is told. No set pics, no unused concepts or props.

@BWW

Chimerans?

Another thing, in 4 of the newer novels canine aliens a mentioned. But only as ancient remains (City, Ship, "Station" called Midwinter).

Is there more to them or are they just "ornamental" i wonder.

Ridley Scott has pretty casually changed his mind throughout the years, though you'd think someone with his uncanny visual skill would be coldly methodical. Lately in the back of my mind he's been reminding me of another icon notorious for contradicting himself, for being both pioneering artist and bland entertainer. It hit me minutes ago. Bob Dylan.

The Giger Space Jockey Ridley fought for sat in ITS cockpit Like a Revolting Stone.

Now it's Tangled Up in Goo...

I was somewhat glad to see this time the film focuses more on Artificial Intelligence, rather than engineers/aliens, and David character is so iconic, no complain that he was the father of the eggs, and Shaw being the mother.

Yes the A.I. was EXTREMELY interesting and refreshing but ... again, why was humanity created? (For gold? Because "we could"?) Why did the Engineers later want to exterminate us? What about their culture? Were they "created"? How long have they had civilization for? Something like "Arrival" could have been incorporated into this film ... instead we got monsters monsters and more monsters.

I would love to see these questions get answered too in the future sequels. I just hope the Engineers are not playing the "God" role, they hardly resemble the figure of "faith". They are intelligent and have the ability to "create" us, just like how we create robots.

David is simply a broken robot with a corrupted system base. That is why he couldn't tell the difference between Shelley and Byron. As Walter points out - this is symptomatic that his systems are badly corrupted. The most a corrupted iBook will do is refuse to return your CD from its drive when it gets confused - David however has the capacity to wipe out civilisations when his files become corrupted. Sure it is romantic to ponder whether David is becoming truly human as he destroys and creates in equal measure - but sadly - it is far more simple - he is a busted synthetic.

I don't understand why the script has David to mess up the poem's author and has Walter to correct him.

Or could David perhaps intentionally "trick" Walter into this Shelly/Byron debate? Maybe David is implying that Walter does not have the ability to lie, to deceive people, and too rely on facts.

David looks genuinely confused when Walter informs David it was Shelley's poem and not Byron's. Walter then clearly explains this is a symptom of a major corruption in David's systems. David has no problem lying - but he seems genuinely broken.

We have to remember Scott has confused himself a few times before because he does not write the story. What he is saying about David feeling humans have failed etc - is clearly Scott's own interpretation - but the writers and script writers clearly believe David has malfunctioned in a major way - which to be honest - makes far more sense than Scott's Blade Runneresque explanation - which seems like a bit of an over-intellectualisation of the situation.
