Stan Winston (deceased)

I have just returned from my Alien Day experience at my local theater. All in all, it was a thoroughly worthwhile investment.

It all teed off with a showing of Prometheus. And it was just as painful as every other viewing I've ever had the sadism to endure. Only two notable points: they seemed to dub out words at seemingly random points; they silenced the word "straight" when Vickers instructs David to fix her a drink, "Vodka ________ up". The other occurrence I can no longer remember.

Once finished, Ridley Scott came on screen to thank fans and introduce his seminal masterpiece, Alien. The wonderful surprise for me was that it was a director's cut / special-edition version, which included deleted scenes and subtly different dialog in parts. Notable was the inclusion of: Lambert slapping Ripley; the Alien rocking before attacking Brett; Parker and Ripley explicitly witnessing Brett's capture; and of course, the cocoon scene. However, the most notable for me was a slight extension to the scene where the Alien is examining Jonesy in his box -- it then swipes the box away!

Alien was tremendously enhanced by this version, in my opinion. It was absolutely riveting, and I was constantly looking to the sides of my empty row with the irrational fear of something creeping up on me!

The juxtaposition of Prometheus and Alien only highlighted the poor quality film that the former is -- plot, acting, props, effects, etc. Frankly, the opening credits of Alien looked a bit dated with the jittery wording in front of a jittery mining ship, but that was soon forgotten as I indulged in a tour de force of acting, effects, camerawork and suspense.

After that, Ridley was back on screen to introduce the footage that was shown a few months ago involving the backburster and the landing ship exploding. It was actually very compelling and the acting was exceptional -- that scene alone is better than the entire debacle that is Prometheus.

Finally, Ridley treated us to "the crossing" footage, which others are discussing elsewhere. I will just say that, I'm glad the plot does not look like it is following the obvious path I certainly thought of.

Suddenly, my pessimistic disposition has been lifted into feel-good optimism. I think we are going to love Alien: Covenant.

I respect you view on Prometheus we are all welcome to our own,  i will say i have heard about AC and the flaws people had with Prometheus do appear in this movie also... But with Aliens running around and Eggs, some Fanboys will forget to notice.

I do wonder if Prometheus had Face Huggers instead of Hammerpedes and Milburn gave birth to Xenomorph and Fifield became a more Xeno mutant, and Vickers Survived and got it by the Deacon then a lot would have enjoyed Prometheus, because of the Alieny Additions...

I do think its interesting with the Cut of Alien you saw, i think that would have been interesting... maybe once he has finished i can see him release his Prequels with a Directors Cut of Prometheus and the Alien Cut that was shown Today.

As a Ridley Scott Alien Boxset

Stan Winston (deceased) Thanks for sharing! I do not envy your having to suffer Prometheus. I must admit that my passionate hatred for Shaw disappeared after watching the Crossing or Prologue- that short bit had way more impact than the entire Prometheus movie imo.

That leads me to BigDave. I think Prometheus would have been much better with the deleted scenes added. Instead, they were added as extras on the Blue Ray. I had been screaming for a proper DC but it never happened.

@dk I totally agree with you. We were TOLD that Prometheus would NOT have xenos over and over and over and over, but that it WAS in the "Alien Universe". Other than bad acting (Logan Michelle Michael morgan Green) and a pretty bad script (thank you Damon) it was a good story, but not well executed. AND that story is ripe for a future of amazing and intriguing exploration, which is why it isn't NEARLY as bad as it seems to some.

Stan was the scene as brutal as others have described?

Indeed Prometheus could have been better...

AC will have a lot of things that may bug some who expect everything explained, how did this happen, where did that come from..

I made a Topic on this... about what Shaw and David had done and obtained and how long was they on LV-223 before they left.

Drake,

 *** SPOILER ***

The preview scene is indeed brutal. If anyone is at all disturbed by blood, then this is not for them because the gore level is turned up to 11. The back-bursting was intense but the mouth-bursting was spine-tingling. I would say that the humans slipping around on blood, misfiring guns, and jamming feet in doors was a bit slapstick in hindsight, but I still feel excited about this film.
