I don't really understand why people hate Prometheus. I hear everybody complaining about because there was no aliens in it.

1.The cast is well picked

2.The acting was top notch

3.The story itself was great

4.It made the Alien universe much larger.

5.A great movie is all ways supposed to leave you asking questions

6.The man himself Ridley Scott made it so put some respect on his name.

@Chowe I don't HATE prometheus, in fact, I loved it. BUT, I'll have to disagree with several of your tenets:

1) The cast was NOT well picked.

2) the acting was quite terrible (Holloway, Old Weyland, Rapace (at times), etc.)

3) the story was "interesting" and artsy, having many interpretations, but I wouldn't say "great".

4) I can agree with that.

5) I can agree with that.

6) I can agree with that.

I love prometheus too, alot of people like to bash it and complain about it because they don't like characters in it doing some silly stuff, unanswered questions, story a bit confusing to them,SJ being just a suit worn by bald humanoid engineers not the elephantine creatures they've always imagined,no xenos etc.

On the positive side people do agree that the visuals and Fassbender's performance of David 8 are outstanding, but for the rest, they immediately start complaining about everything I mentioned above.

I enjoyed PROMETHEUS, and while it could have been better, and did have some dumb tropes in it (Eg; Holloway then the rest removing their helmets) I can overlook those little things.

I like Prometheus a lot but it could be way closer to my ideal for a serious Sci-Fi movie. Why? There's way too little "Sci" in it. It just didn't feel at all like a real exploratory mission. The whole team acted like a completely incoherent bunch of randomly selected characters who didn't even know where they were going and what were they expected to do there. That's a recipe for disaster. Remember - Fifield buggered off followed by Millburn once he discovered what was the expedition about. And both were just waved goodbye "OK, guys, see you back in the ship, hope you know the way out!"-style.
Not to mention the crew taking their helmets off and dissecting alien biological specimen wearing nothing more than surgical masks in a non-contained environment (while being observed by a curious guy in hipster-clothes gobbling alcohol directly from the bottle). There was a total lack of protocol and coherency which, to me, nearly ruined the movie. The guys from Scooby Doo seem way more systematic and reasonable than the crew of Prometheus.
From what I saw in the Alien: Covenant trailers so far it won't be much different than Prometheus in this regard - people walking around in an uncharted and apparently alive planet wearing nothing more than funny-looking hats as protection...

My ONLY real regret is that as Holloway is dead, I cannot have him somewhere in ALIEN: Manticore to learn some horrible lessons about stupidity in extraterrestrial environments.
BUT...I MIGHT drop that character's brother into ALIEN: MANTICORE; Paradise as sometimes siblings share career-areas, and i'm sure a sibling would want answers about WTF happened to the Prmetheus Expedition and his brother.

David, agreed, he really stole the movie!!

It's flawed but most people don't hate it.

Hate is a strong word, I don’t hate any movie even though I can think that it sucks but that is not my opinion about most movies. Prometheus has some good things about it but it also has many parts that stink.

I will go through the list

  1. I can’t say a lot about that since I haven’t watched many of their movies

  1. Not sure about that, if they did the best that they could being given the underwhelming script (which was better before Lindelof and Scott F’ed it up).

  1. Sorry but it was not. I don’t care about Weyland’s quest for immortality, I don’t care about Shaw and her role and the connection between the Engineers and the Xeno was lame.

  1. At what cost? I don’t care that much about the Engineers after seeing that movie because they were not made to be very interesting. They could have been well done but they were just handled in a bad way because the connection Xeno-Engineers wasn't done too well. Sure we were given some new monsters that were alright but no, it was a miss.

  1. It depends if you leave questions if it is a movie that is well thought out, if there are characters that you care for, and so on. Yes it left things to think about but for bad reasons, namely bad writing. They should have explained more about the Engineers-Xenos and not made it so vague. An audience shouldn’t have to watch a movie ten times before they can figure things out, Prometheus requires that so it works for those that are really interested but not for those that just want to end the working week with watching a movie with their friend, woman, what ever.

6. So just because he has been involved in some classics (I give him that) he is above criticizing? I don’t think so. Any movie that I find underwhelming is a movie that I feel free to criticize as much as I want (as people should be allowed to).

Hate isn’t a word that describes my feelings for Prometheus, rather the word is disappointment because it could have been so much better. I would still give it a 2 out of 5 which means that it doesn’t stink and it isn’t great but it is OK.

Chowe: Of course you are allowed to have your opinion, that is alright but it is just that I disagree with you.

As Dark Nebula says, Fassbender did good work there and to a huge degree saved Prometheus from being a disaster.

R&D Engineer: Sure Fifield and Milburn acted stupid but they were not the only characters that did so

“The guys from Scooby Doo seem way more systematic and reasonable than the crew of Prometheus.“

That made me laugh so much! Thanks! Even though there are many characters that I dislike there are also some side-characters that I never remember the name of like the two co-pilots for example, that is how bad many of the characters are. You are correct about removing the helmets, that was just dumb. Holloway was probably the drinking from a bottle guy, I didn’t like that character either.

Haha, I must admit I plagiarized it from the Prometheus forum where a guy had written "Even Scooby and Shaggy would run more cleverly from the falling Juggernaut than Shaw and Vickers". (citing by memory). :)

Well, plagiarized or not, it was good for a chuckle and it did sum things up pretty nicely. :)
And yeah, they would have enough smarts to run truly away from it (intentionally or panic-driven random course-changes) whereas Vickers...man, I felt that she would have been smarter than that actually.

Actually I find the connection between the Engineers and the Xenos probably the best and most thrilling part of the movie. The lack of obvious direct connection but the hints for some connection leave many questions to the fans and their fantasy. I find it a great thing for a movie to do so. Personally I would be rather disappointed had we seen facehuggers and Xenos running around in the prequel. We saw plenty of these in the 4 episodes of the franchise already. The chain black goo -> Trilobite (analogue to the facehugger) -> Deacon (analogue to the Xeno) was a clear hint that the Engineers at least created something that maybe created the Xenos at a certain point. I'm still banging my head with the question where and how.

I fully agree with you that nearly half the characters were just stats - this is untypical for the franchise. And also that nearly everyone with a major role in the movie except for Janek and Vickers did incredibly stupid things.

And yeah, the drinking guy was Holloway. He was acting like a ghetto gangsta all the time. I was so happy when he died! :)

Vickers and Shaw do change course while running away.  Hard to believe the myth about them running in a straight line still persists.

I dislike Prometheus because Scott should have kept the Aliens Engineers draft which was far superior in almost any single way. The human and especially engineer technologies were more impressive. The engineer was  outstanding and the characters were way smarter, relatable and likable especially Holloway. Not forgetting the protomorph and ils amazing capabilities.

We see Shaw fall (I think she fell) and roll to the side, thus escaping being crushed...

Vickers, I've watched that scene more than once and there's some minor deviations in the course, but not enough to save her life obviously.
If there's a significant course-deviation Vickers made, I'm sorry but I missed it, where did she change course in a significant manner?

I pretty much agree. For me personally, Prometheus ultimately failed to keep me invested in the "story" and the "characters", except David who was the only quality bearing pillar left to prevent a total collapse of interest from my part.

I have read the available drafts and such of the original scripts, and more should have been used from them, I agree.
However, there was so much happening in that script that it might have been possible cram it all into a 2 hour movie-window without making things feel crowded'.

I am hoping they re-visit that original script and at least salvage some ideas from it. There were some great ideas in there that'd be a shame to waste.

1.The cast is well picked

To a degree yes, Ridleys likes to give unknowns or upcoming Actors a break, Alien was the same, and so is Alien Covenant.  Each Ridley Scott Alien movie had a % of known names, % relatively unknowns and % of upcoming ones.

2.The acting was top notch

I dont agree with this, some was Good, some was bad, overall it did its job to drive the Plot.. i dont think Alien Covenant is going to be having Nominee after Nominee for Oscars either.

3.The story itself was great

The idea was interesting and i think the Story needed a bit more work, it needed to borrow a few bits from Spaights Draft but i felt a Majority Prometheus type movie would had been better than a Majority Alien Engineers (Spaights Draft) one...

4.It made the Alien universe much larger.

Potentially very much so.... but i think this is now a concern for Fox/Ridley and they may now want to shrink it down a bit, well not got to some places that could have been opened up with the Revelations in Prometheus.

5.A great movie is all ways supposed to leave you asking questions

The movie was a tad bit to ambiguous, especially for many, but i agree its the many unanswered things that keep some coming back to the movie for multiple viewings. I am sure its a movie that after Alien Covenant will get you going back and looking at Prometheus again, i actually think Prometheus would be a movie people may have to go and check out a few times after AC, than say even Alien would be needed.

6.The man himself Ridley Scott made it so put some respect on his name.

Ridley Scott is a Legend he has some flaws, mainly a few Wardrobe Malfunctions and Scale mistakes.  But i guess things can get missed and overlooked when you are trying to put so much Detail into every movie that he does.   I know he will do well with a Good Draft, its a case of how good is the Plot of Alien Covenant, rather than how Good can Ridley Scott make it on the Screen.

Here are Links to how i saw Prometheus...

Not Bad.... Some Wasted Opportunity.. but Great Potential.

Love the Reply from Jump the Gun Spartacus shame he had it in for me and a few others, great ideas and was very committed to the site, sadly could not take criticism and you kind of had to agree with everything they said... still miss many of there debates though ;)

Legendary Poster as far as Replies in a Short Period of Time.

To those who are concerned about seeing movie

And i think those are actually very valid posts on the movie, it has grown on my with the more i saw it and its actually the Mystery and Things it leaves open, that left the movie open to debate and interpretations... if it was full of answers i am sure this Forum would have far far less posts.

Not sure of this ideal place to put this...

Saves me making a Thread on it... This was a Supposed Prometheus Plot i was sent in 2012 and was Early May 2012

See if you guys think this sounded a better movie, bit funny as this so called version which i think was fake, does nicely tie into potentially the Plot for Alien Covenant.

====================================

The film begins with a quote from the bible stating, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth' and then we see a space shot of Earth, the planet looks different, almost covered with ice and the subtitle reading Earth: 500,000 B.C. Large flying saucers appear hovering over our planet. We then get a quick glimpse inside some kind of alien room with a live hologram of the planet and we see a large hand reaching out for it. We then see these ships arriving on Earth and landing near a waterfall. After some credits we then skip to outside the craft and we see some kind of URN standing on the grass outside. These beings then kidnap some indiginous pre-humans and experiment with them, taking their blood. We then watch as several of these pre-humans are set loose outside the craft. They are changing, shedding hair and their physique and structure changes or mutates. We then see inside their bodies and watch as their DNA begins to change. These now mutated pre-humans who are turning human i think watch the crafts leave.

We then skip to Earth: 35,000 B.C and the crafts return once again. This time they enslave the humans and we see some scenes that feature humans inside some structure like pryamid kneeling down and handing baskets of golds and gifts to some unseen giant beings whom are sitting on thrones. We see a shot of the pyramids of Egypt and Central America and the Nazca lines and mountain holes. We then skip to Earth: 10,000 B.C. One of these beings can be seen wearing some sort of funny looking suit with a really weird looking nose (At first I thought that is how they look and found it dumb but i put my concerns to the side after learning what they were exactly). One of these beings is looking over its human slaves in Sumeria. It then spots a child creating fire using rocks and spotting humans speaking to one another and it i think gets angry about humans being intelligent.

We then cut to a night time scene and see these crafts hovering over some of the civilization cities it created and burning them to the ground before leaving. We get a nice space shot of the crafts leaving Earth and we can see the planet Earth behind them. There are dozens mabye hundreds of small firery holes everywhere. That is when we cut to a space shot of a spaceship named the prometheus travelling through space. we get a small subtitle of the name of the ship, details on how many crew and its mission and its destination (sorry forgotten the name of the star system). We then see inside some very nice looking room and a very weird looking man with a very bad haircut named David playing PRELUDE FOR PIANO NO. 15 IN D FLAT MAJOR, OP. 28 NO. 15 (i know it very well). As the music plays we see several cuts of him walking around the ship by himself. He does things like play chess by himself, paint minature figurines, inject himself with some weird milk substance, play basketball, goes into some cafeteria and sets up chairs and table, sets up a coffee machine, checks the ships computers and power, sits on a chair staring at a wall, walking around some more, sets up chairs in the same place he played basketball before going into a dark room with some kind of sleeping pods with people inside. He goes to a womans and puts on some kind of goggle/helmet device and enters the dream of a woman named Elizabeth shaw. In the dream we see the woman being in the highlands of some country which looks like new zealand to me. She is there with her boyfriend i persume and they find a very old cave with some interesting cave paintings.

After waking everyone up we get to know all of them. Shaw and her (very annoying) boyfriend are really sick and we learn theyve been asleep for years (I hate that whole concept. Thats why i stay away from scifi) We meet Snow whites nemisis who is revealed to own the ship and funded the whole thing. It turns out its also christmas and they all celebrate before being taken to the gym where we see a hologram of an old dude who really has no point in being in this film. I was also surprised it was Guy Pearce; found that out later during end credits. Shaw and her BF explain that for years they have been following every ancient civilization and come to the conclusion that a race of beings came to earth long ago and they found a star map leading to this star system. And this star system it turns out was already being watched by the company years prior but found no reason to travel there untill the BF/GF found a star map. They land on this planet, find more than one seemingly intelligent structure type pyramids and prepare to enter. It turns out that David knows a secret about Shaw but we dont find out what it is till later and she makes him promise not to tell anyone.

Another scene involves David approaching the evil woman; Vickers i believe, and asks her about a room on the ship that he cant gain access too and she even hits him and pins him against a wall and warns him to back off. As they set out to one of these structures they find a way inside and find out there is oxygen inside. They find some very strange things including a giant head and a pile of dead alien bodies. they find a decapitated being (the same ones from the start of the film) and take its head in a bag. Shaws BF finds a bowl and some sort of worm things attach to his suit without him knowing. As they head back to the ship a storm hits them. After returning to the ship they find out that inside this head is another head????? David examines an URN he brought back and finds some kind of gooey stuff inside and runs a scan on it. Vickers enters the room David was talking about and inside is another sleeping pod. It is then revealed this is the reason why her room is using so much power. It is that old man who is dead! But wait! to my complete and total shock, which i found laughable, is that she brings him back to life using a remote control device LMAO. She enters the examination with the old man who is revealed to only be alive for 15 minutes. He congrats everyone and then suddenly the head which looks human explodes and its acid blood burns everything. The gooey stuff is revealed to be some kind of DNA rewritting thing that can turn anything into a living organism.

Sometime later after a few scenes here and there including a make out session between our female hero and her BF. It is revealed later that the BF has something inside his eye. the captain of the ship calls everyone to the deck. It is then revealed that some floating balls have picked up sings of a life form inside the deep dark tunnels beneath the structure and even found what appears to be a space craft. Vickers is against going in surprisingly but the old man persuades them to do so. The second crew inclouding the captain this time go back inside. After going through the tunnels they arrive at some kind of storage facility lol no joke. They then encounter a black swamp and some kind of snake like creature which looks pretty cute. It then snaps at them but they leave it alone and leave. they then venture into another tunnel and arrive at the ship. After entering through a hole they find large beings standing by the walls not moving for some reason. they find a room which has pods like the human sleeping pods. David activates a holographic mapping device. David stays as others wonder about. the same snake thing arrives again and attacks a crew members with a really weird haircut and tattoos. Another crew member, shaws BF faints and begins showing signs of some sort of infected probably caused by the little worm things. the tattood mowhawk guy then struggles to get this thing off which is really doing some nasty shit to him under his suit. It then explodes inside his helmet causing it to melt into his face. This scene really freaked me out. Shit then starts to happen, wall painting appear all around them and change like a slideshow.David is confronted by a giant unseen being. the mohawk guy is dragged into the black water by something. The crew grab Shaws BF and leave.

After returning to ship vickers doesnt let them enter but is talked down by the captain. Shaws BF is looked after as everyone gets their shit together. shaw then really annoys me by stating she wants to stay on the planet to find out the Answer to our creation. The captain goes into Davids computer and discovers he was hiding a secret he learned whilst everyone was asleep; shaw is 7 weeks pregnant. Shaw then begins to feel sick and is taken to a medical capsule of some sort. It turns out some sort of mutation in her body (i have no idea how she got infected) is causing the fetus to grow rapidly. She gives birth to some ugly looking creature which is taken away. It manages to escape causing the captain and others to hunt it down. back on the alien ship David is spared by this being who realises he is not human. It then shows him stuff via holograms of who they are, where they came from and it turns out they arent the beings who created us after all. They are androids like David and their creators are intelligent giant humanoids with banana shaped heads and these alien androids were punished for giving mankind too much freedom and technology and had a war with their creators. These alien androids have been trying to recreate their own androids/clones that resemble their creators but failed which led to their own kind being destroyed instead by their creation. The android alien takes pitty on David and infects him with something before sending him on his way.

Meanwhile on the prometheus this creature shaw has given birth to has grown up and kills some crew members. Down at the cargo bay the mohawk guy returns but is a mutated monster. It kills several crew members; and in one violent scene hacks one to peices using a hatchet. It then opens their mouths and inserts some worm like mutated tongue down int otheir throat inserting something into their stomachs. The dead crew members then mutate and kill others. A huge fire fight with guns and flame throwers come to screen more most of the time in some very tense scenes.

The old man unfortunately is revived and protected by his small group of hench men who at the start were revealed to be engineers but turn out to be weyland ex colonial marines or something like that. shaw is attacked by this thing she had given birth to and kills it using an axe. He BF who is now awake is mutated into a monster and she kills him too. She is now broken, hurt and scarred and at this point i like her now, she's more tougher now. lots of action, gore and death follows. David contacts the crew and against vickers orders shaw sets out to rescue him. After more gore and death scenes and mutation the old man, some scottish woman and some hired guns also flee to the alien ship with Shaw. In the ship David approaches them and tells them about his new friend but begs them not to interfeir with it or try and harm it as it has no qurals with humans. He explains he can ask it to take the survivors home. David meets with the being and it sets up its pilot chair to take them home But after one of the hired guns fires at it in fear it kills him and chases the others through the ship and structure tunnels where it then kills the other hired gun and the scottish woman.

David and the old man enter the alien ship and reach the hologram room. The old man reveals they must try and use the alien ship to leave but david warns against it by warning that stealing their ship may cause an interstellar war but the old man ignores him. David tries to stop him but is killed by the old man who shoots him many times. The old man climbs into this cannon type chair and a suit begins closing in around him sealing him into the chair as the room begins to glow with holograms. David whom is still active but unable to move looks up at him in horror.

on the prometheus the captain and vickers are the only ones left and try and avoid and struggle to survive against their ex crew members who are now mutants who are constantly changing and slowly morphing into something else. shaw arrives on the surface but is contacted by David who is still active but unable to move. He tells Shaw what is happening and reveals that on board this alien vessel is a biomechanical weapon that these beings created by accident that may wipe out our species if the ship travels to earth. Shaw contacts the prometheus as the ground opens up and as the alien craft lifts off. she begs the captain to stop it or else. The captian sets a course for the rising alien craft in an epic kamakazi type sacrafice. Both he and Vickers get to an escape pod and eject and later land. vickers then risks her life to save the fleeing shaw and leaves the pod to rescue her. The prometheus collides with the alien craft sending it crashing to the ground in an epic scene. Shaw and Vickers make it back to safety.

They then take off using the escape pod which is revealed can hold them in their sleeping pods for over 50 years. They are now in space and things seem settled and calm but they ain't. The 8-10 foot android alien thing is on board and kills the captain. vickers and shaw then fight this thing and it turns out Vickers was good after all and that surprised me, usually these types of characters are bad guys but she was good in the end and it also turns out she is that old guys daughter (and hates him) who wanted this mission to find nothing so his empire falls . Vickers however is revealed to be infected. She is attacked and brutally maimed by this being but in the end Shaw kills it with an axe no less. Vickers whom not only dying but is mutating pleads, 'Kill me. Kill me. Mercy!' and shaw screams and cuts her head off. She sets the course on the escape pod which wont even have enough power to last the journey home. with the sleeping pods disabled Shaw begins to pray but soon gives it up claiming why should she pray to something that tried to kill her. In a beautifully shot scene we follow shaw into the sleeping pod as she prepares to go to sleep. she has a flash back of being with her religious father who died in africa and she then drifts to sleep. Screen fades to black but then we are catapulted into a new scene.

Shaw awakes seemingly fine inside a medical pod surrounded by doctors. She is frightened and attacks them before escaping. she is caught and brought back. It is revealed she is on a ship named the Magellan. On board a man approaches the scared and confused Shaw and reveals himself to be the C.E.O of Weyland-yutani and that it has been 15 years since the prometheus was launched. It is revealed that everything they recorded was automatically sent back to the company. When Shaw asks where are they, the man shows her a scroll of murals and a star map and claims that the beings they encountered were mearly just tools used by a greater craftsman and that they have found their creators home world. It is then revealed that not only this ship but a full colony of ships are heading off towards this 'planet of gods'. We then zoom into a mural drawing of the android aliens creator and OUR CREATOR which is humanoid with a long narrow banana shaped head. The film ends.

It has it's flaws.  I think it just comes down to whether the overall movie outweighs those flaws.  And for some people, it might not.

Also, people had a lot of expectations for the movie, some of which were possibly too high, and the movie didn't meet these expectations.  For example, some people didn't like the fact that there weren't many xenomorph-esque creatures.

Frankly I think it just wasn't some people's cup of tea.  For instance, I know some people (not big 'Alien' fans) who could sit through other Alien movies that couldn't sit through Prometheus.  These are the kind of people who have to have some kind of action happening every 5 minutes in movies or they're not interested.  So yeah, not much "action" = not as commercially appealing to some.  Also, the length of the movie only added to this lack of appeal.  And I think some people just found the movie just downright confusing.

Lastly, I think it was most appealing to hardcore Alien fans.  Having seen all the Alien movies before Prometheus, I was looking at it from the POV of an Alien fan.  So I can't say what Prometheus would have looked like to someone unfamiliar with any of the Alien media, but I'm sure that played a part.  I'm not saying Prometheus isn't a great movie in its own right... it definitely is.  And the concept of "meeting your maker" is also very interesting in its own right, and I'm sure I would have still been wowed at the end, had I not already been an Alien fan.  But I'm sure the context of other Alien movies/media added something to the "big picture" of Prometheus and the questions it was trying to answer that just didn't impact non-Alien fans as much.

I don't personally know anyone who watched the whole movie and hated it, but I have seen the movie get a lot of "hate" online, if that makes sense.  Some of the criticism is warranted.  For example, leaving it up to the audience to figure things out and put certain pieces together a little too often.  David's motivations for infecting Holloway come to mind, among others.  Granted, it is a fine line trying to decide what information/scenes to keep or cut from a movie and exactly how much information to give out, especially when the movie is just a piece of a larger puzzle.  And I know pacing and length are factors in that decision as well.  But I feel like the movie could have used a little more clarity overall.

Despite its flaws, I love it.  By far, one of my favorite parts of Alien was the exploration of the derelict, and Prometheus expanded on that aspect.  And despite the hate Prometheus got, I personally know some people who weren't big Alien fans before they saw it, but after they saw it they immediately became hooked on the Alien franchise.  So while I think some of the criticism is warranted, I still think the overall impression of the movie is a good one.  Also, everything is always going to be hated by SOMEONE.  You can't ever please everyone.

I have to say, PROMETHEUS did somewhat re-ignite my love of the ALIENverse. It was a return to the Darkness, where NO help is coming and scary, unfathomable things/elements/story-elements are involved. I loved the visuals, and Fassbender really added some depth to the Synthetic character role which will likely influence many if not all future actors/actresses portraying Synthetics.

It returned to the 'feel' of the ALIENverse as originally laid as a foundation by R. Scott and O'Bannon, Schussett, etc. all those years ago.
Thus because of the 'feel' I can and do tend to overlook the flaws/accept them but will also admit that I share many of the common complaints about the movie.

Let's just hope that Alien Covenant will fix some of the confusing plot holes.

The Gaps, yeah...I think most of the fanbase is hoping for that, for answers to questions we've had for quite a long time now.

My only complaint was how criminally under-utilised Idris Elba was lol.

And i wanted more Deacon/Trilobite! A facehugger leaping from an egg is one thing, imagine have a friggin giant squid-spider chase you down a dark corridor hahha

Other than that, loved it.

Edit: yeah i always wondered why they bothered making Guy Pearce old, it looked fake and crap, should've just hired actual old fella instead.

Agreed on Elba, though he did make good use of what screen time he got :)

Trilobite, yeah, so much more could have been done with it and the Deacon !! :D
