Distress Call

"Covenant discovers a "rogue signal" of "human form," and that distress call is what leads them to a paradise-like planet, one that looks better than where they were originally headed."

moviefone.com interview with Mark Huffman

“One big thing, time-wise, that producer Mark Huffam revealed to us (that the synopsis fails to mention) is that the action in "Alien: Covenant" takes place 10 years after the events of "Prometheus." (Kind of a major point, actually.)

Huffam also dropped the detail that the crew of the Covenant discovers a "rogue signal" of "human form," and that distress call is what leads them to a paradise-like planet, one that looks better than where they were originally headed.

The crew then lands, as Huffam put it, "on what appears to be a very beautiful, unspoiled paradise of a planet, but from there on, it just all goes downhill for them."

David 8 sent a distress signal of "human form".

Is this image below a portion of recovered human technology (along with ship transmitter) used to send the signal that brought the Covenant crew off course to the planet Paradise?

David 8 and Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (if alive) could have visited many human worlds or outposts or lured other space travelers to Paradise in the ten years in between Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Dr. Shaw appears to be singing or humming the same song played on the record player in the above image.

The assumption here is that she spent time listening to this record playing a song over 100 years old at the time and David 8 could have used it maybe when she was gone (dead). The song included in a transmission to the humans would fit as a primer pattern easily decoded by listening satellites.

Of all the songs written by the year 2100, Dr. Shaw is humming the same song (in the below hologram) heard when the record is playing in the room with the view similar to the wheat field near a mountain on Paradise.

David 8 sends a signal recognized as human technology in the transmission (see above interview) and the Covenant colony mission is sent there because the feedback was that Paradise was a better colony planet than the Covenant initial destination.

Movie Description from Fox Movies below:

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the synthetic David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

well, transmitting a song like that WOULD certainly get attention and state 'Hey, Hoomans are here!', so if that's what he did, then it was a very clever thing to do as it would also serve to allay suspicion.

Blackwinter-witch, the song would go along great with "this planet is great, come rescue me" in a transmission.

True, it would. Yeah, if David uses this song as part of the beacon, that shows some real cunning and craftiness.

Like in the original Alien (and Prometheus) the beacon (paintings) may be an invitation, a warning, or both.

...or an impromptu desperate distress call?

@ Ingeniero... great theory. I also recall a still where Walter is standing with Carmen Ejogo etc and what looks like an image of the last engineer is apparent. Some of the footage from Shaws' suit camera probably got thrown in to the signal.

I think as covered in this Topic i made HERE

Potentially yes, it could have been used in the Transmission but then we have to ask where did David get the Record Player from?

My Topic was to discus the relevance of these scenes, not only as a possible transmission, but also to answer how come David 8 has different clothing to what he was wearing at the end of Prometheus... and also one on set report said there was area where Shaw had a Bed and Clothes thrown all around and i am sure they said it was a Metal Bed?

I cant see how David would fit another Ship on the Juggernaught though, or that he would fly one there and its unlikely another Ship would have got to Paradise before them.

Despite this shot being something that could explain how David could draw those things in his workshop and have the kind of lighting he had in the workshop and his clothes.

In my topic i gave this reply...

So indeed the options that are likely are.

1) Daniels Apartment view in a Flash Back (we have to accept its coincidence its similar to the setting of the Drop Ship landing). Oh and coincidence of the same Song.

2) Its a previous Ship, that is either in another location on Paradise despite the coincidence of similar back drop, or a previous ship that has left that area somehow.

OR.......

3) A Module from the Drop Ship, that has fallen off the Rescue Drop Ship and landed on the surface and then sank into the Water.

As i dont think it would be a Module dropped and then Daniels makes it her home, as this would mean she heads back to the Surface after the Encounter with the Xenomorph on the ship. Especially since the second Shot we hear the sound gets muffled which would happen if the Module was now under water.

So i think option 3 is the best explanation but the only puzzle is the lack of wreckage from the Blown Up Drop Ship which should be evident in the 2nd shot of the OT.

Unless we are to assume the wreckage like the Module is now under water?

So is it possible this ship with the record player is a life boat from the Prometheus that David 8 & Shaw brought with them from LV-223?

@Cerulean Blue It's definitely possible. Lifeboats are often equipped with random luxury items; a record player fits under that category.

And if Shaw was trying to escape, she would most likely try by means of lifeboat. David probably walked in on her in the process of deploying it from the main vessel. So this could've been where he discovered the record player.

What's the story, MUTHUR?

Blackwinter-witch, I read that the John Denver song was used as a beacon by David 8 to get the attention of the Covenant that broke down conveniently nearby. I am so sure that the incident that disabled the Covenant was natural too. Natural to the ways of David 8 conducts himself.

David 8 doesn't use the record player though. It is from Daniels' room beside the screen out of view.

Apparently they're awoken from hypersleep 7 years earlier than expected, then receive the beacon.

If paradise is assumed to look better than the intended destination, why not aim for paradise all along? O.o

@Ingeniero   I think you're right, you can see the folders on the bed look like they're almost in the same position

@M577  In one of the recent trailers Daniels makes a comment about the planet, Paradise, being hidden. The question is how was the planet "hidden"?

yesterday's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why
