No to another AVP sequel, but yes to an AVP origin movie?

While tossing in some thoughts on the Front Page post about picking AVP back up, I realized that even though I really am not looking for AVP to continue, there is one type of AVP movie I wouldn't mind seeing. If Fox gave as a stylish origin story on the Predators' first encounter with the xenos, it might actually be a success.

This would really depend on Writer/Director/Producer choices but in giving more thought to it over the last few hours, I came up with the skeleton of something I could actually get into.

What does everyone think of the idea that the next AVP should be an AVP prequel. A depiction of ancient predators first acquaintance with the xenomorphs?

If this is premise you could get into, how would you set it up? What would be the focal plot points?

Personally, I'd prefer it be a movie without humans or words for that matter. It would also need to showcase xenos collective intelligence and strategic nature as it's weapon instead of full contact combat. Ideally it's be a survival story. A situation in which a predator finds itself unexpectedly marooned on a foreign planet. One where it would eventually learn, the planets only inhabitants are a hive creatures it has never known before. Creatures unmatched in their pure hostility and capacity to operate in groups. Something the predator would have to survive and conquer if it hopes to ever leave.

I'll kick this off with my own idea for an opening in the comments

Yeah it's a great idea but here's the kicker. The general public in the United States will not go see an AVP movie with no human characters in it. It just won't appeal to the regular moviegoer just to the hardcore fans and the studio, 20th Century Fox in this instance, won't spend money on this knowing the general public will not go. They need to make money off this movie and they won't make enough profit off of it, maybe none at all, with just the hardcore fan base. It would do a lot better in the foreign market and as great as that is they still want the movie to be a success domestically and it wouldn't.

I mentioned this on the thread I believe kanes new face got the realisation from. I don't want a movie like avp again but agree something that show cases the first confrontation between the 2 species. something like, a hunt takes place in space, same timeline-ish as alien. the predators r hunting a human ship bound for a planet to terraform, unaware of a xeno nest on the planet. the humans land and after a bit some go missing. the predators scan the planet from orbit, though looking only for humans completely miss any detection of the xeno. when the hunter is sent to the planet only a handful of humans r left and the predator has to use all his skills to avoid becoming prey to the xeno himself. not interested in the predator teaming up with the humans, this becomes a battle for him to survive as much as the humans as he has never encountered the xeno before so is unprepared

would love to see a scene where the predator is cloaked, moving silently toward his prey. we see the heat vision of the lone person who hears something. the predator assumes it is himself the human detects. the predator is 10 feet away and we see his heat vision. clear as day the human stands. all of a sudden the human is hoisted into the air by some unseen force. we see, in the heat vision, an impact on the humans skull and then the human is gone, vanishing through an air duct or something. the predator stands, bewildered and confused and now goes to investigate

I would love the OP plot, but we don't live in a world where that could be made financially viable as stated above.

However, the original AvP novel would not be far from the other storylines presented here and I would support that movie being made. Weyland-Yutani seeds an agriculture/ animal husbandry type colony with eggs to infect the populace and finally grow their very own xenomorph colony. Predators show up for "normal" hunting excursion. Outbreak happens and Preds are killing everyone (colonials and colonial marines) and everything (xenos) just to survive.

They do end up working with main character, Mahiko Naguchi, at the end but from the human perspective I found it quite terrifying throughout.

I didn't realize this thread actually came into being. When I tried to create it originally I was getting an error. But since it's here, this was the initial idea I had for an opening to such a movie. Keep in mind, I punched it out pretty quickly and it really only should cover about the first 20 minutes of this movie that we'll never see...

The movie would open with some sort of fire fight in space between a small Predator craft and some other alien species with advanced tech. The Predator craft would take a critical hit and be sent plummeting towards a nearby planet.

At the crash we see two predators. One is unscathed and the other has some decent injuries. The the injured predator remains on board the crashed ship while the other exits to survey the planet. Shortly after, the injured predator witnesses his shipmate taken off-guard by several snarling black creatures. Within moments screams and howls of pain can be heard. By the time the injured predator collects itself to aid his shipmate, he exits the ship only to find a trail of neon blood leading off to a cave at the base of a cliff.

The predator follows the trail into the cave, wandering into the darkness. More commotion is heard from within the cave. The cries of a predator can be heard along with the sound of it's weapon discharging several times and some very high pitched squeals/screams. It is then that the injured predator stops dead in it's tracks as it notices the walls around it begin moving. Now leaving it's shipmate behind to some unknown fate it struggles to escape the walls as they close in.

Out of the cave now, the predator struggles to escape as it knows the walls of the cave haven't stopped their pursuit. Racing back towards the ship, grunting in pain. It hasn't finished treating it's injuries from the crash. Every stride is painful. It pulls a device from it's leg and throws it a few feet ahead as a hanging vine becomes a mechanism of escape.

The predator swings over the device it threw and into the brush ahead. It does not stop running as an explosion is heard behind. Moving now much more slowly. It's injuries have worsened. It reluctantly slows and begins to fall only to roll under a large bolder jutting partially out of the ground. It lays quiet, waiting. There is nothing but silence. The pursuers do not seem to have followed this far. The predator drifts into darkness.

Waking now face in the dirt. It is night. The predator pulls itself up, unclear of how long it has been unconscious. It checks the terminal on it's forearm which is now shooting sparks. It was destroyed. The predator begins limping with purpose. It's destination soon becomes clear. The lights of the fallen craft shine through the trees. The predator makes it's way into what remains of the cockpit. It reaches into a side compartment and pulls out a what appears to be a rolled up tool set. It begins performing surgery on itself. First it's outter thigh, then it's ribs. Completing the final steps of the procedure now, it's wounds seems to have almost vanished. It is then that something on the main control panel catches the predators eye.

The control panels are all but destroyed. It looks as if magma had been spattered across them. This damage wasn't present when he and the other had sent out the distress signal which now appears to no longer be broadcasting. Something had happened in the ship while the predator was out in search of the other. It became clear all too quickly. Without the ability to broadcast a signal from the cockpit, the predator would need to use it's terminal which was no longer functioning. It's only option would be to find the other predator.

The predator pushes against the back of the pilot seat. The seat of the chair opens, revealing several components of armor and a mask. After fitting these to itself, the predator exits the ship and begins walking cautiously in the direction of the cave it had narrowly escaped from.......

^^^^ more, need to know what happened to his ship

I think the only direction they could take at this point with AvP is Aliens + Predators + marines in space.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 1:22 PM

id like that but for me id like it to be the first time the predators encounter the xeno. say they are hunting the marines as the ultimate human hunt. the marines have been sent in to clear a nest and the predator follows them, unaware of what hes walking into

They first encountered Aliens thousands of years ago.

After 30+ years everyone knows what Aliens and Predators are now. An origin story is a bit redundant at this point.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 1:46 PM

that's no reason it cant be done. look at the dark knight trilogy, or what ridley is doing with his prequel trilogy. things can go in different directions than what has already been done.

S.M

MemberXenomorphFeb-08-2017 2:00 PM

A stranded Predator turning from hunter to hunted could work. But origin stories can get very tiresome, particularly when the audience is very familiar with the content.

Nolan got away with an origin story in Batman Begins - because we'd never seen it before outside comics.  In the Burton films, Bruce Wayne is already Batman before the film begins.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 2:09 PM

I was talking about the villains. the joker and 2 face more specifically. already done in previous movies yet Nolan did them completely differently. iv yet to see somewhere say that this cant be done in the avp universe. oh sorry, uv said it cant happen so I suppose that's it then

Dr. Curt Connors

MemberChestbursterFeb-08-2017 2:22 PM

It could happen and Christopher Nolan is the man!

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 2:25 PM

his trilogy was awesome. and absolutely no reason that concept cant be used in the avp universe

S.M

MemberXenomorphFeb-08-2017 2:25 PM

I didn't say it can't be done; only that it doesn't sound terribly interesting, especially considering a much bigger audience is crying out for AvPvUSCM.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 2:33 PM

maybe not to u but others may find it a good way to save the crossover. in comics and books it is awesome but onscreen it bombed. a darker more origins themed movie could be just what it needs. and I think the AvPvUSCM would be a brilliant way to go. it brings the 3 species together though not in the way some might expect. the USCM's have been sent in to clear a nest/ samples to allow for terraforming though they have been detected by a far off predator hunting clan ship which has now followed them. the marines land followed by the predators who have no idea what else is down there, maybe? like I say theres no reason this couldn't be the first encounter between pred and xeno even though avp and predator 2 has shown it isn't. this clan may not have come across the xeno? the director may do a 'Nolan' and go another path

S.M

MemberXenomorphFeb-08-2017 2:35 PM

They bombed critically.  They did pretty well in terms of box office.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 2:38 PM

yea that's bums on seats. u have 2 of the biggest franchises coming together, ofcourse it was going to make money. but in general terms of what fans thought, IT BOMBED

Dr. Curt Connors

MemberChestbursterFeb-08-2017 2:41 PM

@ali81 Yep I agree, if something works than try to use the same method. They could definitely do what the great Christopher Nolan did for Batman, The Dark Knight Trilogy are my favorite movies ever, and apply it to AVP!

S.M

MemberXenomorphFeb-08-2017 2:44 PM

Nolan's Batman was drawing on existing source material from comics while creating a new film continuity.

Creating a new film continuity over an existing film continuity can be a little more difficult.

Dr. Curt Connors

MemberChestbursterFeb-08-2017 2:48 PM

@S.M.  True and yes I know what Christopher Nolan drew from for his Batman movies, The Long Halloween, Batman Year One, No Man's Land, Knightfall, etc. It would be a lot tougher for AVP, you're right about that.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 2:50 PM

only difficult if the viewers simply wont accept it. most people I have spoken to cant wait to see alien5 which is going to do just that. I think most people would welcome an alternative to the first avp. as ridley scott says without completely disregarding alien3 and AR, we r going to be given an alternative fork in the road. if u don't like what they do then u still have alien3 and AR. all that's needed is a bit of give and take from the fans but this crossover could very well be one that fans would welcome an alternative. I for one would, and I did enjoy avp1 as a popcorn flick. but is someone gave me a darker, more alien/ aliens movie and chucked a few preds in I wouldn't mind at all

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 2:53 PM

plus avp has a lot of material to be drawn on just like batman.

Dr. Curt Connors

MemberChestbursterFeb-08-2017 2:54 PM

@ali81   Yeah, I love the idea that I have read on here from multiple people talking about Alien 5 saying Alien 3 and Resurrection are dreams Ripley had in cryosleep, I think that's cool as shit.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 2:58 PM

dr curt. I don't think that's the way theyr going to go with alien5. I think from what I hear is theyr just going to give us a stand up alternative to alien3. I enjoyed A3 though not my fave but given the books and comics that depict hicks and newts survival, I welcome a different take on what happened to them. give them a story and not just kill them off coz they wouldn't pay Biehn the fee he wanted

Dr. Curt Connors

MemberChestbursterFeb-08-2017 3:22 PM

@ali81   Yeah that would be cool, I will be happy with whatever they do. Looking forward to seeing those characters again.

S.M

MemberXenomorphFeb-08-2017 3:30 PM

Not sure they're doing anything with Alien 5 now.

ali81

MemberNeomorphFeb-08-2017 3:33 PM

I think wel see alien5 after ridley has finished with his story and brought us upto alien. makes sense for him to finish before Blomkamp starts his

MemberDeaconFeb-08-2017 3:59 PM

I think potentially there was a better franchise cross-over to be had, especially some of the Comics and also the Video Games of around 16 years ago.

A AVP set in the timeline that the Dark Horse Comics are, could work if done right.  Same as a Alien sequel and prequels can but they can also Bomb too...  but still do well at Box Office because the Xenomorph sells $$$$

So if Fox think they can make $$$$ out of another AVP i think there is a chance we would see one again in the future.. how soon?

Who knows but i would bet within 20 years we would see another AVP for sure.
