Your expectations for the first Alien: Covenant trailer
Chris
AdminEngineerOct-07-2016 12:09 PMThe first Alien: Covenant trailer is inbound. Some fans speculate the trailer could drop at NYCC this month, while others expect it to debut this winter, likely attached to the theatrical release of Rogue One. Regardless of when exactly, we do know one is on its way sooner rather than later.
My question to fellow Prometheus fans is, given Prometheus' cryptic trailers which led up to its release, having not totally and accurately portrayed the film, what are your expectations for the first Alien: Covenant trailer?
The Prometheus trailers did make it difficult to decipher the film's plot and series of events, which was good in my opinion. However, some argue they expected a completely different film than the one we got after seeing the trailers released.
Are you hoping for a similar approach to Covenant's trailers? Or do you want them to be more inline with the film's plot elements, essentially making it easier to "piece together" the series of events throughout the film.
Personally, I'm hoping for fairly cryptic trailers, ones that don't reveal much of the film's plot, but enough to engage us in a roller coaster of speculation leading up to its August release date.

MemberChestbursterOct-07-2016 10:37 PMWell Chris the first thing is I am relying on you to tell me whether it gives to much away - NO PRESSURE. Because if it does then I am out of here.
On the other hand if it is a number of tantalising images with just one or two pieces of dialogue then I am good to go.
I would love to see :-
1) A sweep over Paradise.
2) A hand that may or may not be Bio Mechaniod/Big Idea David.
3) Enigmatic dialogue from Daniels and David Covenant.
4) A flash of the technically alive Shaw.
5) A visual of what the Covenant Couples look like. "They went in search of Paradise they found hell"
If this is an A L I E N series film they have to tease the life cycle so those whom were confused by Prometheus/casual fans get the clear and simple message "THIS IS AN ALIEN MOVIE".
Also to reinforce the brand it needs to express fear. If there are unique design elements like the teardrop ship I would rather wait for August 4th.
Put simply i want a lot of obscurity which leads to some great conversations here.

MemberDeaconOct-08-2016 5:09 PMWe have to remember the purpose of the trailers is to tease and not spoil...
Prometheus stuck with this but the last trailers was a bit more spoiler-ish... (showed Engineer and Trilobite) and also the trailer of the Engineers Legs as he stood above Shaw...
The clever thing with Prometheus was it teased a bit to set up the Prologue and Plot of the movie... the synopsis. Which was that Shaw/Holloway found Star Charts from Ancient Cultures that pointed to a STAR SYSTEM and they had set off to this place.
The way the trailers covered this was mild, it did not spoil much as we knew this was the Synopsis....
Alien Covenant has a similar part of its Synopsis that is about the Colony Ship and its mission to discover what they thought would be Paradise... And so i think a few shots of some of the couples giving us some insight into their anticipation at finding a New World to Start a New, will be a definite part of the Trailer... and a shot of this Paradise World.
The other elements of Prometheus Trailer, was cryptic... first we saw the Sacrificial Engineer only just a glimpse with Vickers speech to her father "a king has his reign and then he dies"
At this point not many of us would be aware who this being was or what was going on, especially those who never followed the build up to the movie on websites like this... so this scene gave us a glimpse but we was not 100% sure what this shot was from at the time of the trailers.
Engineers are not a Mystery now... we know they was the Space Jockey or so its hinted...
Alien Covenant could tease us with a quick shot thats to do with the plot in the same fashion maybe its David, maybe a Engineer or a being who we cant see clearly (maybe just a hand or silhouette). But have this scene with a quote from the movie... again maybe by Shaw, or from Weylands old quotes.... or David or Daniels. It could be something as simple as a Shot of David with one of the Urns... just a quick shot like from Prometheus (Big Things have Small Beginnings)... with a Shaw voice over "what is unique about creation, is their a purpose" or something that would tie into Shaws Questions about obviously Creation and Why... because before Prometheus her belief would have been we was unique Earth was unique and God created all for a purpose.
The next part of Prometheus Trailers was to tease the Monsters and Xeno connection with the quick glance at the Mural... so viewers would see a Xeno connection and build up ANTICIPATION that we would see more Xeno than we did and answers... we knew it was a Alien Prequel and would have some answers or so we thought!
Alien Covenant could do similar if it shows in one shot for a moment a Xeno Egg or similar... maybe it starts to open and fade to black.... We know its got Eggs, and going to have Xenomorphs... but we dont want to give to much away... so no Chest Buster hints etc....
Prometheus gave us quick look at the Hammerpedes, we could maybe see a glance of a Face Hugger... it only has to be the quick shot of the fingers or something.....
Prometheus also gave us Fifield... and so again maybe we could see something related to the Xenomorph from a distance and not full on... in the Alien Covenant Trailer.... not enough to make out the Monster but only that it is Xenomorph looking..... or we could have a shot of the disaster scene on Paradise.. especially if indeed it shows some of those beings fighting..... this fighting could be shown quickly just as the quick Fifield attack was in Prometheus Trailers..
Maybe with a Quote by one of the cast or a Narrator relating to the Fall of Man or Rebellion it could be related to Prometheus Mythos.... or a Paradise Lost Quote!
I think we will get the Shot of (Daniels) in that Cryo-pod or what ever, and a few explosion bits and bobs...

MemberDeaconOct-08-2016 5:17 PMAlso we have to remember the Money shot well one of them was the Space Jockey Chair Scene, and the Juggernaught Map that was detected.... Janek "is that a ship"
We knew it was a prequel of sorts and so seeing a Derelict/Space Jockey related quick shot... was not surprise, but they did it in a way to build up ANTICIPATION, it did not give to much away....
I think Alien Covenant could show a shot of the Juggernaught or Urns or something related or even remains of long gone Engineer Technology and Civilization..
Prometheus teased the C-Section and for those who paused the Trailer it gave to much away... i think it would be wise for Alien Covenant to avoid any Chest Busting Shots...
Have to remember the aim is to not give away too much, and show what we know from Synopsis and the purpose of the movie.... and so Engineers and connections to Evil Bio Weapons is known.... so showing a bit wont hurt.... but then we know so much background about the movie... that i hope they dont cover too much even though we know..
*Paradise is the Engineers Homeworld
*David left on a Engineer Ship that we saw other one in Prometheus with Bio-Weapon Urn Cargo that is connected to Xeno DNA
*Engineers are related to the Space Jockey and Xeno creation
*Movie is to set up a link to Alien and cover more about the process and why the Xeno was created...
They dont want to give that away in trailers to much.....
And they want to now show much so that those who never seen Prometheus and only Alien movies and see the Trailer based on it being a Alien movie... would not be spoilt to much as to what Prometheus was all about.

MemberNeomorphOct-10-2016 9:20 AMI hope that it won't give the whole movie away but it could very well describe what the movie is about in general. Hopefully the trailer won't be one thing and the movie will be another.

MemberDeaconOct-10-2016 5:54 PMIndeed lets hope so.....
We know more about the Plot and Direction of Alien Covenant than we did with Prometheus.... we have also had more clues given to us than we did for Prometheus.
It does leave little room for surprises... but i dont think Fox and Ridley would be so stupid.... and so i think there is more to it than the amount of images and comments they have released.
Some of Prometheus was a bit Spoilery.... especially latter Trailers with the Engineer seen more and Trilobite vs Engineer Quick glimpse....
Only thing they never gave away was 100% the Sacrificial Scene and the Deacon Chest Buster.
Alien Covenant seems to be giving more away... but i think there is more to it than that and a few twists and turns.

MemberFacehuggerOct-14-2016 10:13 AMWhat has come out so far seems very deliberate and I'm sure hasn't really given a lot away. I imagine (hope!) some plot twists and turns will throw us all off come next summer. So I think Ridley will want to keep cards very close to his chest. The list of 'off limits topics' that Danny McBride alluded to was very telling . . .
I have a guilty confession . . . basically, when Prometheus was being built up I was out of the country for a long period of time and not really keeping up with current affairs. In short, a couple of days after me getting back to the UK I saw a trailer for the film (having literally not heard one thing about it).
Boy did my jaw drop! Straight away I'm thinking 'Is this an ALIEN film?' Then I saw the Juggernaught, Engineer and some other Xeno links and nearly wet myself ;) Finally, I thought, we are going to see who the SJ was and why the Xeno was there! Which as we know . . . lol
After watching the film, literally the next day, I have to say I thought the trailer gave a bit too much away.
I hope they don't repeat this with AC but judging what has come out so far I think whoever is handling this is doing a pretty good job - we have a sense of what the film will be about (mainly to overtly tie in the Xeno links) but the set peaks etc have generally made us ask more questions than give answers. Hopefully the trailer will continue in this vain.
I can fully imagine the last scene of the trailer being a Xeno (or close relation) in a close up whilst pulling back its gums to reveal those familiar teeth and drool :)

I hope that they will not give too much away in the trailer and it would be interesting if they build it in a way that we will think that we know what will happen but then something else does. All scenes don't have to be like this but some of them.

MemberFacehuggerOct-15-2016 5:53 AM@ T_D Sounds good.
What could work very well, imo - and this follows from your idea, is if they portray the film in the trailer as a 'standard' Xeno/creature flick, but then the actual film reveals much more depth and twists. Audiences coming out and thinking 'What the hell have I just watched?!' . . . but in a good way ;)
A recent film I saw that did this well was Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson. I recommend it if you haven't seen it.
Showing glimpses of unfamiliar tech or glimpses of 'creatures' like MJ referred to will also be pretty effective, but doesn't (or shouldn't!) have to give too much away.
Hopefully we get to see it sooner than later . . .
