I've dug out my DVD of Planet of The Vampires, been years since I watched it!
I knew there were many similarities to A L I E N, and Prometheus, as NOOB said it's uncanny!
Bava made his film with a $100,000 budget. He never had trouble finding backers for his projects as they usually came in under budget and were guaranteed to recoup a healthy profit.
He was a great stylist. Whilst some of the ropey special effects equate to their low budget, and mid sixties era, his background as a cinematographer is evident in the composition of scenes, dark, foggy and mirroring comic book pulp with the use of vibrant colours. It's a wonderfully atmospheric and creepy experience.
Many comparisons could be made with regards to Mario Bava and Ridley Scott!

Yep, I remember O'Bannon saying he pinched bits from Vampires on the Alien Quadrilogy DVD extras ... but the more you look at it, the more it fits ... love the old classics, have most on BluRay now ...
Found this from last year ...
