Part 5

The Edge

5/12/2015, 1349 hours, Vardak Province, Afghanistan

The bodies of men, women, and children lay throughout the mosque; some still hunkered over in the position of prayer. Quills, some of which were nearly a foot long lay embedded in many of them. Others were covered in bite and claw marks. The blood had dried already, yet only a few of the bodies were beginning to bloat. This had been recent. However, the most shocking part was without a doubt the one body that lay in the center of the massacre. It had a long, stiff tail that was covered in quills, two powerful legs with a sickle shaped claw on each foot, and a vaguely reptilian head, full of dozens of small, sharp teeth. White and brown feathers covered most of its body, some of which were stained red with blood not just from the people around it, but also from multiple holes throughout its body.

“Who shot the, well, dinosaur,” asked Mule, observing the bullet holes in its feather and quill covered hide.

“No. We aren’t sure whom exactly, but whoever it had been wanted it dead. We found spent casings about were you’re standing. Seven-six-two by thirty-nine according to the labels. Big ass bullets.”

Krieger merely sat there, the conversations of his teammates barely audible to him. How could such a thing happen? Dinosaurs had been dead for millions of years. How could one simply show up in the middle of a town in Afghanistan and kill everyone? It just didn’t make sense.

“Are there more? The dinosaur I mean,” asked Reeder.

“We don’t know. We think they’re related to the birds though,” reported Hugo.

“Let’s get out of here. It reeks, and I don’t think Krieger can handle the death,” Said Thumper. “Boss isn’t taking this well. Nearly tripped over his own boot on the way here.”

“Yeah, we’re just across the road. The others are treating Clinton’s wounds as we speak.” Hugo started to leave and the others followed him, except Reeder.

“Dammit Kriegs, you’ve got to stop being so hard on yourself. There is literally nothing you could’ve done to save them. They died not because of what you did or didn’t do. They died because shit happens, and sometimes shit sucks. As rangers, our job is to make sure that when shit happens, someone pays for it. Not because we want to, but because we have to,” Reeder said.

Krieger swallowed. “As rangers, we also try to keep shit from happening,” he retorted.

“And you know what?” Began Reeder. “But sometimes, we can’t keep it from happening, so we hunt it down, and make sure it doesn’t strike again.”

“Tell me friend, do you really believe that?” asked Krieger.

“I have to. If I didn’t, I’d be just as fucked up as you. It’s what keeps me sane,” said Reeder. “Now come on, you’ve got a squad to lead.”

“You know, I think that’s just what I needed to hear,” said Krieger.

            “Of course it was.”

The two rangers stood and left the building.

Author's Notes:

I miss comments. And cerato, what happened to your little review things?

That out of the way, I must admit that I could've released this much, much earlier than I did, but held off because... reasons?

Anyway, I just noticed they had a team raptor now, but that's beside the point. (Can I get anymore sidetracked, heck if I know! tune in next time to see!)

Next episode will hopefully be up around Friday.

SILVER_FALCON - This was an incredibly fun segment to read! I very much enjoy your, hmm, "gritty" manner of writing; it gives your work a sense of authenticity that I find to be most agreeable! Thank you so much for taking the time to produce and share this excellent work with us! :)

Nice chapter, like the four before it. I have been reading, and believe you me, I like comments too (my last fight got four comments from three people).

Now then, I, being the gun-nut around here, have something to say regarding the seven-six-two by thirty nine (7.62x39):

The 7.62x39 is not a very big bullet. It's small by centre fire standards, but mid-size when it comes to things readily available for the general population. Ever see a .308 Win bullet? A .308 is a 7.62x51, and a 30-06 is 7.62x54. .308 is considered a large game bullet, but isn't reccomended for much larger than a large deer. The 7.62x39 is cheap to make, has enough stopping power to drop a human, and light recoil, which makes it ideal for battle rifles, such as the FN FAL and SCAR-H.

Jack of all trades. Master of none

Ok, yes Mr. Happy, you are correct. 7.62x39 isn't the world's biggest bullet, but by US military standards (The M16, M4 and most of their variants use 5.56x45 NATO).

Although, I must correct you on one thing. The FN FAL and SCAR-H utilize 7.62x51. 7.62x39 however, is old AK ammunition (Although I suppose the AK-104 uses it...).

But, anyway, thanks for the compliments!

My bad. I'm not so much a military gun-nut so much as a "what can I legally obtain in Canada with my PAL license?" gun-nut. Just an FYI, Barrett M95 (.50 BMG, bolt action), legal. Ruger BX25 magazine (for the 10/22 rifle and charger pistol), illegal because a pistol can't have more than a 10 round mag (have to settle for somecheap butler creek mags that fit the 10/22 but not charger and have feeding issues and whatnot). Thanks Canadian laws.

I knew the FN FAL and SCAR-H used 7.62xsomething, but I wasn't completely sure. Something was telling me it was 51 though.

Also, SKS rifles use 7.62x39. Guess it's a Russian cartridge more than anything.

Yeah, I guess I'm the military nut here. And yes, 7.62x39 is almost exclusively used by Russia and ex-soviet states, but even then in limited numbers. Newer AK models fire 5.45x39, a much smaller round that is more effective against soft body armour.

And as an avid airsofter, I'm somewhat familiar with Canadian gun laws.

MR.HAPPY9097 and SILVER_FALCON - The amount of information that you two have provided with regards to man-made arms is quite compelling! I greatly enjoy the knowledge inherent in the exchanges that are initiated between you! :)

Thanks SR.

5.45? What is that? A .215 or something like that? That's smaller than the 5.56 NATO. Interesting nonetheless. I can see why they'd use it though. Sounds like it uses the same powder charge, so a smaller bullet will travel faster, and because there is less area to pass through something, it will penetrate deeper. Pretty cool.

Thank you SR

And yes, 5.45 is a very small round, but has much more penetrating power than 7.62. Fun fact, the Mujahideen called 5.45 the "poisoned bullet" because of the wounds it would inflict despite its small size.

I know. That's smaller than a .22 (5.5mm vs 5.45mm), and travelling a hella lot faster. That's a deadly little bugger right there. I can imagine its nickname though, assuming it's hollowpoints.
