Would Matt Reeves be a good choice to direct Godzilla 2?

I think it is a perfect choice.

He Directed Cloverfield, another great monster movie and he did an amazing job on Planet of the Apes sequel, and they had good human characters as well.

I know that he is now busy directing the third movie of POTA, but that comes out in 2016 so it will be just in time to hire him to direct Godzilla 2.

I dont think Id like Gareth to return to direct the film because I have a strong feeling that he will tease the monsters again and dilever mostly poor human characters.

Max Borenstein to return as the writer? Hmm idk Ill see how the Seventh Son will do, then probably yes, but if it doesnt no then.

I don't really consider Cloverfield to be a great monster movie. If they were to pursue another director that isn't Gareth I wouldn't put Matt Reeves at the top of the list of potential directors I'd like to see take his place.

Gareth Edwards is already confirmed to be returning to direct Godzilla 2 and Godzilla 3 if it is made. I didn't mind Edwards' approach to Godzilla 2014, though I think the repeated cutaways from the battles were unneccessary and that perhaps a few more monster scenes might have done the movie some good, but I'm sure he will learn from what didn't work in the last film and improve on it for Godzilla 2.

I always prefer keeping the films consistent with each other when they are connected, hence why I think Edwards is the best choice. One thing that made the Gamera Trilogy so good was that Shusuke Kaneko directed all three. He kept them consistent, while improving with each entry. I don't want a drastic change in tone from this film to the sequels, I want to see what else Edwards can bring to the franchise. He's still a very green director, and for his first major film to be a successful high-budget Hollywood blockbuster revival to an iconic franchise is an impressive achievement.

As for Matt Reeves, I think if Edwards couldn't direct a sequel for whatever reason, Reeves would be my next choice. Honestly, his approach to Cloverfield involved more teasing and cutaways from the monster than Godzilla 2014. One thing I liked about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was how Reeves characterized the apes just as much if not more than the human characters. The human characters were nothing special at face value, but their interactions with Caesar and the apes are what made the movie. It would be interesting to see Reeves give some serious character to the monsters in a Godzilla film, while still fleshing out the humans and making them relevant.

Long-winded reply aside, I still think Gareth Edwards is the man for any future Legendary Godzilla films.

@The King of the Monsters, I agree. I'm fine with Gareth returning, but we need better characters. Hopefully Max Borenstein will do better with the characters.

Ihave to agree with everyone else, it's better off to have gareth drict the two squeal. There's proabaly better choices but it would be an awful idea to go from the tone gareth established to another pacfic rim big action movie. Beside this was Gareth's first major movie I'm willing to be the will get better, same with max he hasen't actually done a lot of big movies before this, before godzilla 2 he is doing some other movies(skull island, seventh son, and maybe something else don't know off hand). All of this is a growing process anyway, besides I like it when the director pulls a fast ball on the audience.

I for one love Cloverfield and find it to be an underrated masterpiece. The way its story weaves its characters and themes has more in common with the original 1954 Godzilla than the 2014 film does.

That said, as much as I love Cloverfield, it's not Matt Reeves best film. That would go to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It's impressive he's basically a director-for-hire that has made good on so much material that's not his own. He's not what I consider a "great" or "visionary" director, but the man makes some very, very well made movies. He's proven his worth thusfar.

I don't know if he would have been my first choice, but I could've gotten behind a Reeves directed Godzilla.

Seconded, Danielle. :) I absolutely adore that film.  It was a masterpiece of mood and suspense.  I dare say it was the best ORIGINAL American giant monster movie since the original King Kong.  The concept was well implimented, and man... the hype leading up to that movie. 8D

But back on topic... Matt Reeves would most likely do a great job, but... despite all that Gareth Edwards hate out there (which baffles me but hey... welcome to the Godzilla fandom), he remains the best and only man for the job in my eyes.  As one of the few fans (it seems) that actually appreciated what he brought to the first movie, I can honestly say I am pumped to see him return in 2018, especially since he will have hte experience of a Star Wars film under his belt by then.

Indeed. Like I said, I could easily get behind a Matt Reeves directed Godzilla if it came down to it. But I like Edwards. I don't think he's quite proven his worth yet like Reeves, but he's clearly got the potential. Hollywood obviously sees the potential as well or he wouldn't have recieved the Star Wars job. I hope he becomes the director we all want him to be.

I think that it would be amazing if Gareth returns. He may have ruined the movie for some, but for alot of us true fans, it was an experience more than anything. He should definitely come back JUST for the monsters and his cinematography.

would love to see matt reeves, dawn was my favourite movie of the summer and the best one imo and cloverfield is one of my favourite movies, fantastic director.

Dawn was a perfect example of how to mix human story with the 'monster' story, perfect time split between the humans and the apes and got both their stories across beautifully.

Not going to lie I don't have much faith in Gareth with this sequel, just because i'm afraid hell do the same thing he did in the first one with this movie, in terms of teasing the monsters and not letting them get much screen time.  I hope he improves on that for this sequel.
