Oh, what a great dinosaur to talk about! And also a great conversation topic! Well, im going to let you guys know where i stand in size and what not, so be prepared!

Spinosaurus, hence the dinosaur i got my name from. Lets me get started on size, shall we? The places where i get my estimations are purely through what ive saw on most sites that have its size stated and also through observations of animals it has similarities with. All in all, i believe its size is up to 60 ft in length and 14 or 15 tons at most. My reason being is there is no reason for a carnivore to be long and not have weight and height, as well as a bunch of muscle to go along with that length. Length and predation do not mix well, at all, end of story. Which brings me to my second point, which i have stated many times in the past, a land predator that large simply does not rely on the smallest prey in an ecosystem, and also, somthing that large needs to feed almost constantly to keep the energy it needs to kill more/defend itself from intruders.

Fish and small dinosaurs would not be enough to satisfy this enormous carnivore's hunger, so it would most likely resort to eating the much larger individuals of the dinosaurs in the area. Yes, it's skull shape insists it was adapted to capturing fish, but i look at it as more of an accesory to further satisfy its large appetite.

This information i dont look at as merely just OPINIONS, i look at them more as highly educated guesses as to what this dinosaurs was and how it lived, and to add another thing, this is obviously nothing that is meant for starting and arguement, so please, people with strong opinions against this, tread very lightly with what you say, or i will notify you about it and depending on how aggressive you are towrds it, i will not hesitate to give you that same back, but through PM's.

Well, first off, thank you for finally posting how big you think Spino got.

Now then, of course I don't agree, but that's human nature to disagree.

I agree with Mr.H. I'm not going to bother going into why I disagree with those sizes though.

Cat, relax, it's not a Rex vs Spino, and he gave his reasons, so don't worry.

I agree with those sizes but i say spino was 11 tons on average. And about 55 feet long but that's just me.

I have posted many times on what i think of Spino, just never a discussion. And the "of course i dont agree" was not really needed if i say so myself, i mean you could have just left it at the first part.

Lock it? ridiculous.

Guys, comment your thoughts. Seriously, there's no need to not....we can all have a calm rational discussion, can't we? if not, that's on you guys and only you..just sayin

You guys are overreacting... You know, sometimes the cause of fights is the overreacting itself, right?

Wel anyways, I see your reasoningg. I would just put Spino at about 9-12 tons. Just because that's what I believe.

No hes talkin to all of us. Honestly I don't think its a good idea carno. As last time people shared their thought it resulted in a flame war.

I couldnt make it anymore simple thanhow Carno put it, this is nothing that was posted to start anything, pretty sure i stated that above.

Well Ok, you say there is no reason to be big and pray on small animalls, whales, shark whales, and gharials are quite big but only relay on small creatures for food, and both are long but not very tall

This isn't starting anything. S-Rex simply put his thoughts up on what he thinks about Spino, nothing more, nothing less.

11 to 12 tons is where i put it on average as well Raptor, its just that 14 or 15 is my max estimate ;)

If I am correct, this is a discussion of Spinosaurs, not wars or stuff like that. It's okay when discussions go off topic but not right off the bat, if you don't want to discuss Spino, well then don't comment and stop spamming his discusssion with "warnings"!!!

What do you think spino are. I think it are anything it got its jaws on.

MemberCompsognathusAug-27-2014 5:59 PM

Catzilla, this is a land predator we are talking about, not an ocean predator, just keep that in mind.

Whales(at least the baleen ones) are well adapted to eating microprey items, their baleen plates an evolutionary adaptation to occupy a niche that no other animal was really taking at the time. Keep in mind, this was millions of years ago..

Anyway, the whale shark occupies a similar niche, but predominatly feeds on small fish species rather then the krill and shrimp the Baleen whales feed on. The lack of competition allowed them to grow to immense sizes.

Now, larger species of shark often predate on marine vertebrates and mammals. Even aquatic bird species; Sharks are very oppurtunistic creatures. Gharials, are adapted to hunt fish. IT's jaws are elongated, the teeth are very small and conical, and the skull is highly resistent to lateral Torsion( stress in the skull when capturing prey. Gharials don't only eat fish though, and i want you all to keep in mind that even though a creature is adapted to take certain prey, it isn't strictly limited to it. Gharial have been observed taking deer and primates, as well as snakes and others of their own species.

@Carnosaur What does that havre to do with spinosaurs?

Hiphopananomus

MemberCompsognathusAug-27-2014 6:02 PM

Ok, then I'm going to post my thoughts.

Here are my estimates first off all

weight: 6-8 tons 8 is a push though.

Length: 50-55 feet long.

now here are my reasons for this...

first of all spinosaurus in general were very lightly bulit animals, not overly muscular.

diet

90-95% fish 10-5% small dinosaurs in carion

the fish in Spinosaurus ecosystem wernt small... They weighed up to a ton, that's pretty heavy for a fish. Also lets not forget the only animal in Spinosaurus in environment that it could possibly take on Is Ouranosaurus. And even Ouranosaurus would be a tough prey, as it would have been very fast.

The only other herbivores dinosaur that we know about in Spinosaurus envoirment are sauropods... Which honestly I think we can all agree Spinosaurus simply wasn't ment to take on sauropods, it didn't have the teeth or aglity.

Technecly gharials and spinos are river predators and have many simillarities small jaws with pointy teath, have big body masses and leangth, and despite this have a fish diet

Exactly Carno, another thing i have stated a number of times! And like i said, i look at it as more of an accessory for Spino.

Raptor-401

MemberAllosaurusAug-27-2014 6:05 PM

Who knows, maybe Spino would hide in the waters and attack herbivores that came for a drink from the water.

IT'S TIME TO DU-DU-DU-DU-DUEL!!!

Lord Vader

MemberTyrannosaurus RexAug-27-2014 6:06 PM

Well, if we're doing this, here's how big I think the damn thing got.

Weight: 7-8 tons

Length: 50-55 feet

Here's why: The limited remains we have discovered of Spino are in poor condition. They were found in the Sahara desert, and erosion would have taken its toll on any fossil found in the desert. The remains discovered in 1912 may have been from a rather large individual because the average sized ones may have eroded away after millions of years of laying in the sand.

Hiphop, your reasonings are opinionated, if you are going to say it was lightly built, please elaborate on that as well ;)

Tyrant king

MemberCompsognathusAug-27-2014 6:07 PM

Cool. You can't compare s spinosaurs to anything living today because it is so different. My thoughts is that it had a different niche all together. I think it hunted 50% fish and the rest was hadrisUrids and baby sauropods.

Carnosaur

MemberCompsognathusAug-27-2014 6:08 PM

@ Cat, technically, all crocodilians are river predators. They occupy that niche, and surely they do eat fish but the larger species are very capable of taking wildebeest, impala, and you name it( talking mainly about the Saltwater Croc) They have even been observed taking lions and wild dogs from time to time, so for a spinosaurus, a mid sized hadrosaur( ancestor of Ouranosaurus?) were to pass by, it surely wouldn't pass it up because it wasn't adapted to kill it. Shear size and possibly 6 foot arms with meathooks for claws are surely enough to cause death to prey

Nature doesn't deceive us; it is we who deceive ourselves.
