Well it's been a long time since my last post (but considering that i have been on vacation in hurghada it is understandable) however this is an idea i had from a long time but I always thought it would be too controversial. Given that most of you are doing it in some way or another i will start the series and i hope that it's longer than most of my rather short series.
The idea is that i will share one of my theories and hope that you will dabate it politely and carefully. Basically no cursing or fighting with others. Anyway let'start:
The first topic will be Spinosaurus , Torvosaurus , and Tyrannosaurus. I will do this in order to put the most sensitive topics out of the Way, so we will start with....(drumbeat)....Spinosaurus Aegypticus.
Spinosaurus Aegypticus:
Length: 52-58 ft ( 16-17.5 m )
Weight: 6.8-10.2 tons
Height: 17-22 ft ( 5.6-6.2 m )
Bite Force: 2200-4700 PSI
Well most of you consider Spinosaurus to be the longest yet not the largest carnivorous dinosaur being 50-60 ft and weighing 6-8 tons, and for a while so did I, but I found something strange while doing my calculations: if an 11.5 m Suchomimus weighed 4.2 then a 17.5 m Spinosaurus would weigh 6.8 tons, but I forgot something. Exponential growth. There is a rule in science that if an animal grows in length its size will increase exponentially not relatively. meaning that a 17.5 m spinosaurus would weigh between 9.3-10.2 tons a little bit more than the 9 tons everyone agrees on but that would make it the third largest carnivorous dinosaur (not the fourth) just behind the 10.8 Carcharodontosaurus and the MASSIVE 11.8 ton Tyrannosaurus ( Read all about next time).
Another aspect of Spinosaurus that I wanted to talk about is, its life. While most of you know that Spinosaurus ate fish and lived part of it's life in water, some of you may not know that it actually spent 69% of it's life in water, Meaning that it could swim...fast. Some calculations put the monster at a swimming speed of 13-17 miles per hour...a crocodile can swim 20 miles per hour. It can also run at about 28 miles per hour, fast for an animal 2 and a half times larger than an elephant. Another part of its mysterious life was its sail, while some see it as a kind of display others see it as temp. regulation. Well I see it as a kind of display, as let's face it that thing is unmistakable for anything else and I could see it being the most brightly coloured thing in the dinosaur world ( seeing as to how they are related to birds such as peacocks and parrots). so I can imagine a Spinosaurus looking like this in fact:
But there is a time when the Sail will easily be considered a liability, if the wind is against the sail it will deeply limit the Spinosaurus's agility and movement.

You also mentioned a 4.2 ton Suchomimus at 11 meters. I myself put Suchomimus at 3.5 tons tops, so that's probably where are difference of opinion begins.

MemberCompsognathusAug-24-2014 12:23 PMabout exponential growth, that was a point i never factored when i covered it in "the size of.." series, but you make a good point with it. IMO, the 6 ton estimates thrown around by nat geo seemed way to low for a 15-17 meter long theropod, even Bahariasaurus ingens would weigh 5.5 - 6 tons at that length, and it's a very gracile theropod.
Spinosaurus had no need to have drab coloration, as it spent most of its life at the waters edge. It didn't need to set ambushes, nor did it need to hide itself from predators(maybe the young, but that's a different story.
The whole sail thing, i don't really know what the spines anchored. They aren't anything like the spines of dimetrodon, yet aren't like the spines that anchor the fatty hump of a bison. a 6 foot tall ridge like that of Suchomimus seems to be rather unlikely as well...and i don't know of anyone suggesting alternatives, nor can i think of any
Out of curiosity, what do you think of Paul Serenos' new spinosaurus mount? with the oddly proportioned legs and arms, it just seems off to me..

I put spino at 5.5-8 tons and 15-16.5 meters. Also I put Suchomimus at 3-3.5 tons ussualy 3.

CARNOSAUR: I did see it, and it does seem a bit wierd ( espacially the arms ) but i can understand why he did make the legs so long, maybe they were like a crane's in order to stand in deep water.

In 2007, its weight was estimated at between 2.6 and 5.2 tonnes. In 2010, Gregory S. Paul gave lower estimations of 9.5 metres and 2.5 tons. A 3.5 ton weight estimate for an 11 meter Suchomimus isn't that "crazy."

anways, Upscaling from a 11 meter, 3.5 ton Sucho would bring ol' spino into the ball park of ~8/9 tons, 16 meters long.
My thing with the new mount is it looks just plain bizarre, i mean look at this skeletal:

MemberCompsognathusAug-24-2014 12:51 PMHa. 16 meters long and 4-6 tons were my early estimates. Spino's length range for me has increased to 17 meters, though I added 14 meters in the lower spectrum. I upped the minimum weight by a ton and the max by 2 tons.
