Should the New Godzilla Movie be a Classic?

No, you did not read that title incorrectly! Before you think I'm crazy, I'm not one of those people who falls in love with a new movie every time one comes out. In fact, this is the first time I've genuinely wanted to argue with anyone who says negative things about it until they starve to death! It is a simple, yet compelling question with a not so easy answer. It has the feel of a beautiful Steven Spielberg movie and the cinematography of a professional news reporter caught in the action. I may be a little in love with Godzilla. It isn't as dark as we may have thought it would be, but it is a lot like Jaws, but I think different enough to be considered a classic movie. At least it won't be considered that right now, but maybe in another 10-20 years people will appreciate it enough, right? What do you guys think?

It's one of those things that needs to be seasoned before anyone can say, but ultimately no. It won't be considered a classic. It's a good movie. But asking if Godzilla '14 will be considered a classic is no different than asking the same about any of the Millennium movies and perhaps the Heisei films. I'm not saying all of those movies are poor, but I don't believe any have reached the defined status of "classic". (I suppose that's up for debate though.)

Godzilla 2014 actually has to be a classic. Its the first american Godzilla. if that doesnt deserve classic title then no Godzilla does except the original.

Good grief.

Except that it's not the first American Godzilla. That title goes to 1998's Godzilla.

Yeah, as much as us fans understand the rebranding and whatnot, technically the 1998 disaster is the first attempt at an American Godzilla. Cinema history will always remember it as such regardless how fans feel about the new movie.

Plus, I don't think being, "the first American Godzilla" is criteria for a classic or not, guys.

Yes but this is the first REAL GODZILLA non GINO movie made in america. I think it deserves classic title just by it being truly the first real Godzilla movie in america. Featureing the real Godzilla btw.

Good grief.

I was saying it could be a classic not because it's the first true American Godzilla film, but because it's a giant monster movie that's actually treated like a disaster, with beautiful camera angles and long-lasting shots to really get you in the mood that something terrible is happening and you are in the center of it all!

Aricco is hitting the nail on the head. If it's to be regarded as a classic it's because it's seasoned and loved over time with great influence. Being the first "american version" makes no difference. With that logic, Dragonball: Evolution is a classic just because it's the first American, live action Dragonball movie. (I assure you it's not a classic in the least.)

Regardless, I don't see the new movie being regarded as a classic in the future. At best I see it being remembered as a good summer movie, but not a long-lasting influence or overtly memorable. I actually touched on this in an article I wrote for Scified before the movie was even released.

I guess it's up to the fans this movie makes. If in a few years the western Godzilla fan base is largely expanded through this movie then I suppose it would be, but if not then no.

Well in my book, no, however it is a great film and to me legendary created the 29th godzilla film. Sorry i am a purist, sure suitmation may not have done a better job with realism terms and jim rygiels visual effects made godzilla in godzilla 2014 come to life. :)

Not to mention when advertisment was going on, some people said it was a instant classic, only time will tell if it truly was a classic, but for now it is in my top 15 favorites. :)

Not to mention godzilla 2014 was better than tristar's godzilla 1998.

I feel as though Gman2887 isn't listening to me...

I'm listening. I just don't agree is all. Regardless, I think your reasons for its possible inauguration into "classics" is better than Gorilla's. No offense to Gorilla or anything.
