MemberMothra LarvaeJul-28-2014 2:44 PMFrom my perspective, as one who loved the 2014 movie, I think Legendary needs a couple things for the sequel. Especially if Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah ALL appear on screen.
1) They need a bigger budget.
The $160 million was good for Godzilla, but if they're going this big for the second movie they'll need at least $200 million to keep things as realistic as possible.
2) Better CGI.
The CG of Godzilla was great, I'm not dogging it. But imagine Godzilla and the other monsters rendered with as much fidelity and detail as the apes in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. For those who haven't seen the movie, the apes looked almost 100% lifelike as if they were actually on screen. Only a few scenes let it slip that they were CG.
3) Time.
Many of us are dying for the film to be released as soon as possible, but if they're going to be making a movie involving those three monster plus Godzilla, let them take their time. Give them another 3 to 4 years to make sure this next movie is the best it can be. It's a long wait, but hey, we survived waiting from 2010 to 2014 for Godzilla, so one more round couldn't hurt. If they rush it just because the fans can't hold their excitement, then they risk losing quality.
4) Last on the list, they need a stronger human cast.
Keep Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins, as they were great in their respective roles and you have to have Serizawa in it so long as he's still alive. But ditch the Brody herd, maybe keep Stenz, and find an all new leading cast. Aaron Taylor-Johnson did a good job as Ford, but if you ask me his performance was not strong enough to warrant a second appearance.
The reason I say a new and stronger human cast is because I see a lot of people who say that Ford "needs" to come back, like he's some kind of all important hero. He's not. He's just another soldier, and the proof lies in the fact that despite all he did, he received no recognition for it in the end. He was just another face in the crowd while waiting for his wife to appear before the end of the movie. Also, the military never shows such favoritism towards those who do their job. They give them a pat on the back, hand them back their guns and equipment, and tell them not to let it go to their head. Ford was a protagonist to the first film, but not an all important soldier who absolutely must be replaced or reused. There are other EOD specialists who are just as good, if not better, than Ford is. So no, he doens't have to come back and I hope he doesn't. If he does, then that's fine. But make no mistake, he's not all important to the franchise.

1) Totally agree. Gareth proved what he could do with 160 million, give him more around 200 million to create some of the best action set pieces of the genre.
2) Unless they go from animating to motion capture I don't think the CGI will be Planet of the Apes level. Animating CGI takes a little longer to do than motion capture and the monsters won't really be holding any long conversations so there's no real need to try and impress as hard as Planet of the Apes did. Most of the time when the monsters are there it's all acton.

It would be nice if he was now a background character, and used as an expert on the MUTOs/Kaiju in genral. I think the continuity would be good. I think Watanabe should be promoted to leading actor. He was the most interesting character, and I would love if they explored him much further.
as far as budget/time, yup agree. (I also think the money will = better CGI in the end)

1: godzilla would have died
2. the muto eggs would have hatched
3. Sanfransisco would have turned into a burnt stay puff marshmellow man.
Ford deserves to come back, and so does elle, serizara, and serizara's side kick. SHREEEOOONK!!

2.Better CGI!? The CGI was phenomenal! And yeah, i saw the new planet of the apes, but remember, they where motion capture characters, had hair and was a lot smaller, and therefore easier too work with.

4........Wat? Ford, not important? Ehh guess not, its not like he saved a city or something. But with that said, i do kinda agree, i can live without Ford and co., but still...

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-29-2014 5:08 PMI pretty much agree. It's just that, I think Ford has potential as a character. Especially if you've read the novelization of the movie (I have, it's better than the movie, and I LOVE the movie). However, if they don't bring him back, I'll understand and be fine with it. If they replace Ford with Serizawa as the main character, I'll be more than fine, since I loved Serizawa in the film. He could definately carry a new film. And, given the new monsters joining the fray, there is plenty of room for a scientist as a lead.

I especially liked the portrayals of Dr. Serizawa and Dr. Graham. They are the face of Monarch, an organization that should be central to the next installment’s narrative, just from the standpoint of history and mystery.
Also, the next film should hit the ground running, action-wise and kaiju reveal-wise, imho. I’m not advocating the total eschewing of a back story, but, more ‘shock and awe’ is called for with the monsters that will be in Godzilla 2. If all of them are in the next film, we’re talking about large, giant monsters with a tremendous amount of potential to generate killer wind speeds. The Rodan design from the 1956 film is one of my favorite kaiju looks, ever. I hope it’s the basis for what they go with.
I think a bigger budget is going to be necessary with all of those giant monsters. Monsters generally are represented by very good agents, so…anyway, yes, a bigger budget for the sequel. But we’re assuming the next film will take place in the same universe. I hope it does. Continuity would be a great feature and tie-in.
Admiral Stenz would also be welcome. David Strathairn was great in the role. He was firm and decisive, but willing to listen. He even solicited advice from the scientists, the experts.
Can we wait for the next one?
Do we have choice?
