*PLEASE NOTE: This review should be about as unbiased as I can possibly make it, as I was not expecting the movie to be all that good before seeing it. Also, although I will not summarize the plot, there will be major SPOILERS. There will be a short, spoiler-free summary at the bottom.*

So I just went to see the movie on opening night, and what an experience it was, being in a theater full of other G-fans, with wild applause with every big moment (and there were plenty of those)!

So, I had somewhat low expectations for this going in. I mean, I expected to enjoy it, but I was almost certain it would not have the artistic merit of the original (which it didn't, of course), and I thought it would not be as awesome as Final Wars and GMK or have the same emotional impact as vs. Biollante and Destroyah. What I got, however, was a great movie, quite possibly the best Godzilla film aside from the original!

This will be in no way a fully comprehensive review, I'll just point out whatever comes to mind:

The story is quite fresh and interesting, and Gareth Edward's directing is great, as he manages to continue builing up tension throughout the film even after Godzilla's big reveal, all the way up until the climax.

The style of the film is truly unique and refreshing in the world of modern Hollywood blockbusters, where everything is either dark and gritty or over the top and campy. It is generally dark and serious, but is not afraid to indulge in the childlike joy of a giant saurian anti-hero having epic face-offs with other monsters and saving the day for the humans, not unlike the T-rex from Jurassic Park.

One thing that may anger many over-hyped fans is the much-anticipated Honolulu airport scene, the big reveal of Godzilla. It seems quite epic, with a slow pan up Godzilla's body, followed by him roaring in fury at the severely outmatched Hokmuto... then it cuts to a humorous scene of the main character's son watching snippets of the subsequent "fight" (really more of a chase) on TV. There are several more of these "c*cktease" fights, where Godzilla just barely begins to fight one of the Mutos before it cuts to something else, which will cause disappointment for fans who were expecting to see a lot of Godzilla action (there are a few more extensive action scenes with the Mutos throughout the film). However, these scenes serve a very important purpose: to continue the buildup to the climax. After all, if there were more fight scenes earlier on, the big final battle wouldn't seem so special, now, would it?

The action we do get is AWESOME, with each appearence of Godzilla before the climax being one big huge moment after another, with several more in the climax itself, each of them being more awesome than the last. First, there's the huge tsunami as he rises from the sea, then the above-mentioned big reveal, then the Golden Gate Bridge scene where a huge mass that appears to be Godzilla approaches a boat, only to be revealed to be just his tail, then his final face-off against the Femuto, and then, the moment to end all moments, the huge, monumental, incredible, mind-shattering moment where his tail lights up, then his back, then his neck, and he finally unleashes the most incredibly awesome Atomic Breath EVER! It may not have been as powerful or flashy as that of some previous incarnations, but it's all in the presentation, and this Godzilla has undoubtedly the most dramatic and visually pleasing Atomic Breath of them all. But then, just when you think that this is as good as it gets, that they couldn't possibly top this... well, this brings me to my next point:

The deaths of the Mutos are just incredible. First, we get the Hokmuto flying at Godzilla from behind, then *BOOM* he slams it with his tail right into a skyscraper with an impact that seems to shake the very movie theater, causing it to be impaled on the support beams! Then, finally, in the very peak of the climax and undoubtedly the very best scene of the film, the Femuto is staring Ford Brody down (with him hilariously drawing his pistol on it), poised to kill him, when it suddenly stops, we see Godzilla biting down on its neck, he grabs it, forces its jaws open, fires his Atomic Breath down its throat, and TEARS ITS MOTHERF***ING HEAD OFF! F*CK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

*Ahem*

Testosterone overdose aside, the film has solid acting, with Bryan Cranston, Ken Wantanabe, and David Strathairn in particular standing out. It's just to bad their characters are basically pushed aside in favor of Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character, who is somewhat bland, but not nearly as bad as many make him out to be. He may not be particularly interesting, but he serves his purpose, which is to provide a human character who can really take part in the action rather than just talking about what's going on in a war room. Perhaps my biggest problem with the film is how Bryan Cranston's character is killed off very early on, and we only hear a brief snippet of his big speech that was featured in the trailers (with David Strathairn's speech being cut out entirely). The film could've been even better if the main character had been him or Wantanabe's Dr. Serizawa rather than Ford Brody.

*END OF SPOILERS*

Overall, this is probably the best film released since The Dark Knight that I've seen. Sure, it has some issues with the human characters, but they detracted so little from my enjoyment of the film that I can't give it any less than a 5/5. I'd recommend for anyone, G-fan or not, to see it - just don't expect to see a whole lot of Godzilla before the end.

I think you're fanboying on the film a little saying it's the best besides the original, but I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

*SPOILERS*

Definitely a fun enjoyable movie, but not without faults that are either disappointing to say the least. One thing I will point out is that the movie and Garethe label Godzilla as a force of nature that we can't handle or we deserve, but not at one point during the movie did Godzilla ever turn and attack anything human. Even when they were shooting at him he just ripped through the bridge and walked by. I'm fine with the hero Godzilla but don't label him something he's not the whole time when he's clearly doing something else.

Because Godzilla is apathetic to humankind and its civilization, it is not your boogieman to be scared nor your hero, he does what the hell he pleases, and that gives him tremendous respect. He is godlike, and as such you're not entitled to his attention.

Terror does not need to come from a monster that destroys city because (some reason?). Terror can come from not knowing what's out there and what is its intention. We know so little of this Godzilla, and that makes him effective.

Apethetic isn't really a good sign when something is supposed to be a force of nature that mankind has brought upon itself. He's not even apathetic, he's pegged as a hero before he even shows up by Serisawa. The whole movie he's rooting for Godzilla to save the day, a sentiment that's shared by everyone at the end of the movie when he's even labeled a hero. The way Godzilla was explained by Gareth prior to the movie it gave the sense it was going to be a 3 way brawl between humans Godzilla and the Mutos, but for the most part Godzilla just goes the mutos in a very heroic fashion. He never even attacks humans, whereas a force of nature would have destroyed everything in its path, but he swims under boats, blocks missiles from hitting people in a bridge and casually walks out of the city to the cheers of people at the end.

This Godzilla had always existed, he was discovered and not actually awakened. Because guess what, here's the surprising twist, Godzilla is not the destroyer of worlds that blows stuff up just because he can, the MUTOs are the real symbols of man's arrogance and their retribution. Godzilla represents nature's balance in its entirety, as Serizawa said "I believe he is that order."

This Godzilla is apathetic, not a hero, he fights because that's what he wants to do. The reasoning is impossible to understand and left for us to interpret ourselves. Him attacking humans is as sensible as saying that you like killing ants because they threw pretty firecrackers at you. It makes you look like a child. And Godzilla is no child.

Godzilla doesn't BLOCK the missiles that were firing on the Golden Gate, those missiles were intended to hit Godzilla as he was rising. This is increadibly obvious. And no, the crowd doesn't cheer him in the end.

I need to say that 1954 version is still better than 2014 version because althrough 2014 version is dark but it's still not that dark when you compare it to 1954 version. 2014 version has just a little bit dark in the 30 minutes of the film.

The story is great, it's quite interesting not like the other monster movies. But in the middle of the film when the film focus on the human charactor, Ford, too much it's quite boring because his charactor is so flatted.

The film doesnt show Godzilla much but when he show up to fight against muto it feel like "Here comes the HERO!!!!" and i love it! so i dont really have problem with Godzilla show time

There is another problem in the final fighting scene. I want to see Godzilla fights against Muto for a long take not just show the fight for 10 secs then cut to human! but it's still epic :D! The sound affect is so awesome! I highly recommend that you must see it in Dolby Atmos!

So this is a great movie but not the best. It should has more tension and dark tone. I gonna give it 8.5/10

Those missiles were intended for Godzilla when shot but were headed right for the bridge. One soldier even says "Hold your fire there's civilians on the bridge!!!!" And out of the confusion and shock, they still shoot them, hitting the cables and almost humming Sam Brody's bus until Godzilla rises and unintentionally saves the missiles from hitting that part of the bride.

The nature's balance really doesn't make sense. It's clear he's targeting the Mutos but what are they doing to desturb nature's balance? Is it simply that they were supposed to be asleep? In any case it was humans who woke them up, humans who attract them with their nuclean weapons and obviously humans who overall are disturbing the balance of nature, but he ignores them. If he is truly a force of nature, and there to rebalance things he destroyed the mutos but didn't do anything about the cause that woke them up and him?

Discovered over awakened is a debatable topic as they say the first nuclear sub that reached a deep depth disappeared. Whether it was its nuclear power that woke him up or he was awake and they just stumpled on him is never clear, but to say it was 1 or the other with certaintly as you are is wrong.

If you didn't see him as a hero that's fine but it's clear by the things he does the director was very much giving him a heroic role. The fact that he blocked the missiles, which he did intentionally or not, as it is clear by the way the soldiers reacted those missiles were coming for the bridge, it's not as though all the missiles prior to those ones were spot on with quite a few shots hitting the cables and missing.

I never said Godzilla just stepped out of his bed to set balance, I'm saying that HE is the symbol of order for nature itself, what that means is that he exists to be nature's hand. The personal reasoning in his fight against the MUTO is unknown and beautifully mysterious, which I love. There's simply so much you can pull out of his character. He could become nature's wrath, nature's incarnate, a destroyer, a hero, a villain, whatever. His apathy strenghten his depth as a kaiju.

Godzilla always existed, since it's confirmed in the comics. Go to page 26.

What I got out of this movie, is the portrayal of a King of the Monsters. And how he was shown here makes him the greatest badass character in ALL of fiction. No, I don't mean the fight in the climax, ignore that, that's the chocolate in the cake, I'm talking about the part everyone finds boring, because I did not, they were jamn filled with the presence of Godzilla. And that is really something to appreciate.

There is so much majesty and glow in this movie, and it's all directed to Godzilla alone. With or without seeing him, he was there, he appeared from the moment they mentioned his name. And that's why this movie is really awesome.

@DURP004 You seem to be confused about what a natural disaster is. Natural disasters don't go out of their way to kill humans, they just happen, and whoever is caught in their path is at risk. This version of Godzilla reflects that perfectly, as, when he causes a tsunami as he surfaces, destroys the Golden Gate Bridge unintentionally, and knocks down a skyscraper in the process of killing Hokmuto (that is its official name, isn't it?), he kills many people without noticing or caring, just like a natural disaster.

And, why can’t he be both a natural disaster and a hero at the same time? He may not go out of his way to save humans, just as he doesn’t go out of his way to hurt them, but the people of San Francisco still cheer for him and call him their savior as he wakes up from his supposed death (most heartwarming scene I can remember in recent films, by the way) because, intentionally or not, he did save the city, and possibly all of mankind, from the much more malicious Mutos (added alliterative appeal are awesome). Basically, he’s like the T-rex from Jurassic Park, who is a big threat to the human characters, but still gets that Big Damn Hero moment at the end when he unintentionally saves them from the Velociraptors. I think this was the perfect choice, as they knew that at least G-fans would root for Godzilla no matter what, but probably wouldn’t want to see him as a humanity-loving superhero like he was in the 70s.
