A Day in the Life of: Rexy

Before I begin, I just want to say that I personally believe Male Tyrannosaurs were larger, which is an explanation for Rexy’s large size. With the hip argument demolished, and the only sexed Tyrannosaur being  B. rex, confirmed to be a pregnant female (a relatively small Rex for a Tyrannosaurus). My last point is that most reptiles and birds (eagles, birds of prey, emu, ostrich, most other birds, crocodiles, anacondas, alligators, lizards, Komodo dragons and most other large reptiles) the males are quite a bit larger. My averages for females:
39-43 ft. Max: 45 ft
Average for Males:
45-53 ft Max: (with some exceptions, being larger) 57 ft
All in all average length:
43-52 ft in length.
I also believe the males were much more lean and muscular with larger crests (the 3 males (including Rexy) all had very large crests) and nasal bridge knobs or horns. The females were probably more robust. I believe the Males would be the fighters, competing for females, food, territory, and resources, in a battle to the death, with the winner eating the loser. The Males were the offensive, making sure the threat never even hit the female, while the females were the defensive, a last resort to protect territory, food or young. But I do believe that the family groups would hunt and be together for about 1-2 years, then split off, the adults becoming solo hunters. The young might have made prides for a couple years then split off like their parents. However, after about 2-3 years the adults would meet back up and start the cycle over again. By my theory, the adults would be lone hunters for 2/3 to 1/4 of their adult lives then the remainder of their adult lives being pack hunters in families. Now the theory of mine, is just mine, and is NOT a sexist thing, just my opinion based on the evidence lying before me. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t want to meet either gender.

Now... Begin

The great old Bull T. rex rose his massive head. Of course, he didn’t know he had a name. He had no concept of what a name was. However, he had been known before the 1993 incident, lovingly as Rexy. That was when he was a juvenile, before he had cut the worker’s staff numbers in half.... Their bodies too. He had killed and eaten many humans, just because he was hungry. He did what he had to do. What his instincts fir survival told him. Some had mistreated him, and they had paid. Now, however, he shook the memories away, as he heard the sound of choppers approach. He watched as they landed, and snuck up to the helipad as quietly as possible. In fact, he was surprisingly quiet. He could’ve made the ground tremble with each step, but he knew they were already on high alert. The men went to cross the river when suddenly a Deinosuchus sprung out of the water. They all screamed, and shot their guns, the bullets bouncing harmlessly off the huge crocodilian. It hissed and bellowed, snapping forward. Rexy recoiled in surprise, then charged out of the foliage, making his presence known, the ground reverberating with each step.

He rushed forward as the alligator submerged itself, ready to surprise the men again. Rexy, however, had experience with these animals, and splashed into the water, eyeing the log with nearly unnoticeable eyes. He watched as it suddenly sprang out, jaws gaping open. Rexy swiveled around and caught the the alligator mid-air.... By the neck. He hated these things with a passion, they always stole his kills when he wasn’t looking and dragged them back to the water before he could get them back. The T. rex decided to slowly bite down, first the snap of armor, then the squelsh of flesh, the squeal of muscle, then the crack of bone. The Deinosuchus’ eyes widened and he released a sound he had never made before. A squeal of pain and horror. For the first time ever, he was afraid. Rexy gave him mercy, and bit down decisively, ending his life.

The men had been avoiding the whipping tail of the alligator, and the stomping legs of the Tyrannosaur, when they heard the crunch of the Deinosuchus’ neck vertebrae. The theropod let the dead reptile fall from his jaws, the 50 ft length of the massive T. rex turned away from them. Then, slowly, the Tyrannosaurus turned its massive head, and stared right at them. Rexy was now covered in scars, the right side of his face shredded. The most terrifying was the scar that ran down the now pupil-less eye, and the 3 deep scratches that tore way the lip, revealing the teeth anchors and gums. Then the great beast flashed his teeth and let out a deep bellow. One that shook the earth. Rexy was pissed.

He was not ready to be imprisoned. Not again. This was his island now, and NO-ONE was going to take it back. He spun around, and faced the men. He roared, and the men covered their ears to avoid becoming deaf. They were frozen with terror, and some passed out. Finally one snapped out of it and tried to fire at the dinosaur. The bullet hit his scales and bounced off. The T. rex recoiled and lunged forward, grabbing the man by the leg and snapping him into the air, catching him, then shaking him around viciously. The his chest snapped off from the trauma, landing face up, eyes frozen in terror. He swallowed what remained, and looked at the rest. They couldn’t believe what they just saw. They snapped put of their fear-borne paralysis, and fired their weapons the bullets all stung, but didn’t do any real damage. Now, his slow anger was fiery rage. He was beyond pissed, he was furious. He ran into the mob of men, head-butting a ton into a tree, killing them from the impact alone. The rest were crushed under the Tyrannosaur’s foot, or worse, the majority was crushed and swallowed whole by Rexy’s jaws. A small group ran into the bushes as fast as they could.

What they didn’t know was that Rexy was defending something. They stopped short of a nest, as wide in diameter as they were tall. Each chick was no bigger than a modern-day puppy. They were covered in fluffy down, and chirped at each other, playing and wrestling. They stared at the men with big eyes. The leader, Stone, smiled and aimed his gun. The gunshots rang around the island. He was about to finish off the last few when he saw the skeleton of the female Tyrannosaur... and the ripped-to-shreds Spinosaur who had killed her.

His eyes widened in shock at the sight. Both corpses were relatively fresh, no more than a week or two old. He realized the female had been drowned by the spinosaur. The Spinosaurus hadn't been so lucky. Its arms were ripped off, the elegant sail bitten off in two, like a shark bite to a surfboard. The worst part was the head. It lied about 20 ft feel. The body. It had been decapitated. He backed off in shock, his team frozen in steely fear. They were terrified. Suddenly, a small breeze swept through the mans hair. He looked up to see... Rexy.

Rexy let a long, quiet, deep growl. The ground trembled as he took a step forward. Stone couldn't even scream, he was so frightened. Rexy looked at his nest and saw his dead hatchlings. The old bull Tyrannosaur roared as loud as he could in raw fury and disgusted anguish. The T. Rex lunged forward and grabbed Stone. He whipped him around viciously, then snapped him up into the air and crushed him in his jaws. He turned and looked at the rest of the team. A snarl escaped his throat and the men tried to fire their guns. He lunged forward and most of the remaining survivors suffered the same fate as Stone.

The last two of the men screamed and ran for the bushes, not noticing the Velociraptors trailing behind them. The Tyrannosaur looked at his babies once last time, and laid down.  He gave a mournful bellow, and tried to go to sleep. Suddenly, he heard a chirp. He snapped his head up, listening. Another one. And another. He rose and peered into the nest. Suddenly, under one of the fallen leaves, two baby tyrants emerged, one male and one female, unharmed.

He growled in happiness and lifted the two up by the tail. He carried them away, too happy to notice the sudden prick in his thigh. A Tranquilizer. And the man who shot it laid up in the trees, unnoticed by the passing Rex. His name tag said R.M.

When I woke up, I immediately looked around. I went to find my hatchlings when all of a sudden I hit against something invisible. I growled and shoved against the invisible force. The plexiglass wall shattered. I roared and realized my babies weren't there. Then I turned around and went searching. I came to an old bunker in my paddock. Suddenly about 20 of the small bipedal things emerged, long metal things in their hands. I roared and they all flinched, fear written in their eyes. The people were all small, they only reached to my ankle. I growled. Suddenly one shot and the metal bounced off my snout. I roared and lunged forward, flipping the man into the air and swallowing him. I spun around and roared at the rest. They ran and shot their guns, looking behinds them as they ran.

I growled as the small things retreated. Following closely behind , they all shoved into the building, one however was shoved back, as it was trying to push other people at me. The small thing screamed and I slammed my jaws around him, swallowing him whole.

Suddenly, a man emerged from the bunker. I knew him. He was Muldoon. In his arms were my chicks. I growled and he slowly put them down, and they scampered toward me. I stared at the man, not sure of what to do. Behind him were two of the men. I roared a warning. Muldoon saw the men cock their guns and yelled    "Wait! don't do tha-!" Too late. One of the men sneered and shot. I roared at the top of my lungs and lunged forward. I crushed one man in my jaws and threw him to the ground, and the other was flung into a tree, blood smearing the bark.I looked at Muldoon. He was next.

He yelled and ran. I followed close behind, roaring into the sunset. Suddenly, we reached an area where I'd never been. The same invisible force was there with a ton of the small bipeds, flashing strange things and smiling or pointing as I emerged. Muldoon ran though a gate inside the invisible wall, and shut it tight behind him. I roared and backed into the woods. Suddenly, I spun around again, smashing into the barrier, shattering it. I stepped out and growled. All the creatures screamed and fled, the big ones grabbing the little ones. Suddenly, two big ones were swept away, trying to grab their little one, the small one behind. It was very little, a hatchling, an infant.

I stared at it and sniffed. I saw Muldoon try and step forward. I looked up an growled. He froze. The two big ones had a similar scent. They were the parents. Now they screamed and cried, looking at me. The male held back the female as she tried to run towards me. I turned back and looked at the infant... As suddenly a Velociraptor jumped, claws unhinging, jaws cranking open, legs and toe claw flexed back, ready to kill the child....

I roared and grabbed the Raptor out if mid-air. I crushed it in my mouth and threw it as hard as I could, smashing it into a metal tree-like object that had a light on the top, which fell down from the impact. The Velociraptor was already dead before it even hit the pole.

The parents cried and screamed as I faced the infant once again. The baby giggled and touched my snout. He bubbled and made little noises. I growled in contentment. Then, my own babies emerged. They sniffed the other infant who was a little larger.

We watched as the 50 ft monster sniffed and stared down our little Tyson. He was only a year old and we wanted him to see something amazing. A Dinosaur. That's why we brought him. But now, we had no control. It was a T. Rex for Gods' sake! I felt tears stream down my cheeks as I heard Tyson say his first word when he petted the feathered babies. "Doggy"

The hatchling said something, but I didn't understand what. My hatchlings chirped in delight at the small infant. They played and the baby petted my own infants. Suddenly,  I turned around to find the entire Velociraptor cage had been broken out of. A pack of at least 15 now all hissed and creeped towards me. The raptors' eyes scanned the crowd, looking for weaknesses. Then the leaders' eyes saw the infant. He barked an order and they all eyed the baby, spanning out. I growled, as they ran around the sides, ready to flank me. I roared and some jumped back. The hatchling was mine. I heard the parents scream as my jaws engulfed the infant.

The raptors recoiled in surprise and shrieked, all lunging towards me. I shook them off and growled. They kept their distance. This time inching towards me. I turned to the parents. They backed away, accidentally hitting into a wall. "Cornered. No way out." They thought with fear. They were stricken with tears and held back sobs from their infant. I leaned down... Opened my jaws.... And a gurgle escaped my mouth.

They all looked, and saw the infant in my maw. I saw the realization transform their faces as I waited for them to take back their infant. They slowly reached into my mouth and brought out their baby. It was safe, I had carried the baby to its parents knowing the raptors wanted an easy meal.  They gave me a thankful nod, and I bowed my head in respect.
Suddenly I heard the shriek and bark of the alpha male raptor. I spun around to see the entire pack. I growled in warning. "Last chance." I warned.

They all sped toward me. I roared and charged. I turned my head and threw my skull against one, crushed another. They jumped on my back and tried to rip me open. I roared in pain and shook myself. The raptors fell off and shrieked. I roared back, overpowering their shrill screams. I grabbed one and slammed him against a tree. Then I crushed one underfoot, kicked another, and hit one out of the air with my tail. It went flying and slammed against a sign.

After killing a few more, I looked at the alpha male and female. I let the raptor corpse I had drop slowly from my jaws. They hissed and I growled back. The female tried to flank me, but I caught her, lifted her in the air, crushed her, then threw her dead body to the ground. The Alpha Male screamed and shrieked in fury and ran forward, leaping in the air. He landed on the back of my neck. I bellowed in fury.

Finally, I shook him off and caught him by the tail. I snapped him into the air, caught him, crushed him and then threw him. He slammed against a metal moving animal that looked like me, the impact killing the raptor and denting the metal animal, tipping it over. I roared as loud as I could, tipping my head into the sky as lightning flashed in the distance.

I took one last look at the parents and Muldoon, bowed my head in respect, and took my hatchlings back into the wilderness.

That's all folks! What did you think? Btw, yes I did know that the contest is over.

Your story left me speechless.  I could literally feel how Rexy felt the whole way through your narrative, and the power of his paternal instinct.  WELL DONE!!!

However, I saw some misinformation in your first paragraph.

It is true that in almost all reptiles and in most bird species, the males are bigger and stronger.  But not eagles.  The females are larger and heavier.  In fact, all adult female birds of prey (except for vultures and condors) are larger than the males.

Also, if Jane was a T-rex (the jury is still out on that one), she wouldn't have been gravid with fertile eggs.  Everything I read about Jane was that she died when she was ovulating, which means that some of her ova were in her oviducts.  Think of it as a 12 year old girl having her period.  However, if she was gravid with actual eggs, it's quite possible that she was a sexually mature Nanotyrannus, but the jury is still out on that.

Finally, I know that you wanted Rexy to be a male in your story, and it is a fresh angle of covering your story, but in all honesty, I would have kept her as female, since all the original dinosaurs in JP were born female.  As well, since Rexy was the only T-rex on Nublar (in the movie only; there was a young female in the book that lived in fear of her), I doubt there would be a change in the gender.  But I think you just chose to make Rexy a male due to your creative license.

Male or female aside, it was a good story. Love the pics at the end.

Definatly a good story and interesting making the male large, then again wih the genetic tampering Ingen did it is probably  one of the more believable outcomes. And it is possible that they could have still been working out the kinks in gender controling gene theropies so I can see how one male can slip in there.

Amazing story. It was great. Too bad that it was a bit too late.

Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common. The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in. -Brom-

Wow! That was great. If you had posted it before the deadline you surely would have won the competition.

Wow! Thanks Alpha! But for the sake of debate, I have to contradict what you said.

1) In eagles, that is true. I put that there in the middle of my train of thought not thinking. However, it is not like you said. Few raptorial birds share the Female-larger trademark. In most, the female can be up to half as big. A mistake on my part, but the evidence holds strong still.

2) I am not referring to Jane. Jane was a juvenile T-rex or Nanotyrannus. However, both (Jane) are only 15 ft long. I am referring to B-rex, a different specimen. She is a sexually active adult tyrannosaur. She is at the "small" size of 37 ft. Not very big for a Tyrannosaur. She is also not confirmed to be ovulating, but to be pregnant. They dropped a shred of a leg bone tissue into a certain solvent that makes female pregnant bird tissue flexible and create a different chemical. It responded the same, became flexible, stretched, contained all the right proteins, and made the new chemical. Interesting story, you should check it out. Jane, is different. She is like a 12 yr old girl getting her period, while B-rex is like a 25 yr old woman getting her period. Different stories.

3) I never said that Rexy made the gender change. Ingen was incredibly arrogant, so I figured that they might have been so confident, they never even checked. So, one flaw in the system, and suddenly Rexy's a male. Also, Rexy had a small throat dewlap and large, pronounced crests, another factor of a male. (According to JP and today's animals.) IMHO, Rexy was a male, just my opinion though.

Anyways, thanks so much for the compliment! Glad you enjoyed that so much!

@Rex Fan, Thanks! Glad you liked it! I designed/drew 2 of them. Feel free to use them.

@John Morrison, I dont think him being male is that far-fetched like I said with my theory, it wouldn't be that insane. But thanks!

@Tyrant, Thanks! Couldnt kill off the baby!

@UCMP, Yeah, too bad. But thanks!

@Gojira Wow, dont know about that, but thanks!

Thanks S.R! Very nice of you to say. I thought people might want to know what was going on in the T-Rex's head. ;)
