Winged MUTO and the way it flies

After watching the latest (Asian) trailer, we saw glimspes of the Winged MUTO flying. It seems to glide alot in the scenes shown, in that sense it reminded me of Rodan since he glides alot too. So, my speculation is that the Winged MUTO mostly glides, but will do the occasional flapping to ensure he stays airborne and get the necessary lift before getting into a prolonged glide phase.

Of course, it may turned out to be the case he does mostly flapping and only the rare glide (shown in the scenes). But we'll see.

What do you think?

with all we know, possibly. I think it might flap it's wing 1 or 2 times to gain speed and stabillity. but one problem i see it's called the flying muto. (not saying it doesn't glide) But good theroy.

Something funny that occurred to me reading your post and the first response is that you seem to have forgotten that gliding IS flying. So long as a body is suspended in air under its own power, it's technically called "flying." So regardless of style, it's flying through and through.

oh sorry, lol. I accually didn't know that. I just leaned something new. YAY!

condors and vultures are considered flying animals even though they spend a lot of time gliding. Unless the animal can consistantly find high enough places to leap off from, it's gonna have to do some flapping to get airborn. And also to gain speed and altitude.

GODZILLATHEKING123 - I'm willing to speculate that the flying MUTO will actually flap its massive wings quite regularly. When flying creatures dive or manuever through tight areas, they tend to glide - pulling their wings in close or fanning them broadly. Look at hawks and owls - as they dart through forests, they frequently pull their wings in close to their forms in order to avoid collisions with obstacles - much like the MUTO as it flitted amidst the skyscrapers. However, when they dive upon prey, these creatures typically extend their wings widely to both stabilize their flight and reduce sound so as to not alert their quarry. Of course, it looked to me that the MUTO was gliding in to smack Godzilla square on the nose! Ergo it likely wasn't that concerned with muting its approach! :)

Good point Barudarrowi and Something Real.

Although if you are talking about eagles, hawks, owls, pulling in their wings, they are more like diving to their prey and darting through tight corners rather than gliding.

Whereas if you watch the latest trailer, yes, the MUTO does seem to spread its wings (which looks like gliding).  Of course, its a Hollywood movie, so I suppose the producers don't really care to produce ultra-realistic animal flying behaviour.

GODZILLATHEKING123 - And THAT is the finest point of all. Well spoke. Indeed, a little movie magic is necessary to make a creature the size of the winged MUTO fly. I very much doubt that a creature so massive could actually take flight without climbing atop something exceptionally tall and leaping forward to pull into updrafts. Even then, I have difficulty believing that a creature so immense could stay aloft for a great deal of time regardless of how strong the thermals and updrafts carrying it were. :)

Well these are monsters they could have some type of propulsion system to go with its flight. In the scene with the leg coming down it cause some type of energy that pushes people back, so it could have something like that when flying to keep it in the air.

Something Real:

Unless we are talking about Hollywood physics, that way a huge thing like the MUTO don't need to climb tall buildings to fly. ;)

Durpoo4:

You mean like how Gamera had "rocket" propulsion that allowed him to fly?

Basically, rather than being strait fire that shoots it forward though it looks like it would be similar to a shockwave that the leg gave off when it hit the ground that it could give off while midair it propel it upwards or forwards thus it can mostly just glide with minimal flapping.

I think it will mostly glide, but we've seen it flapping on the MUTO1 monitor so it probably doesn't have some sort of alternate propulsion.

^true it could be able to jump start into the air with its legs.

@ Godzillatheking123- Correct, which is why i specified vultures and condors, as gliding on thermals is their primary mode of transportation. The animals you listed are active predators. they need to tuck their wings and dive so they can gain enough speed to catch and kill their prey (perhaps another parallel with the muto). Falcons are the greatest example. Peregrine falcons can dive bomb their prey at speeds reach 180 miles per hour. So maybe the Muto is a combination of both, gliding for perios of time but employing a dive like meneuver when attaking and moving in confined spaces (like say, between buildings).

GODZILLATHEKING - Hahaha! Indeed. There's nothing quite like the take on gravity and other fundamental laws movie makers like to employ! :)

Doperope-

Thanks for the photos. So if it is legit, then we can confirm it can glide quite a bit. The question is, does it also flap?
