I recent viewing of the dust mentioned the dust was silica. I did note that another name of silica was Silicon dioxide. It is not clear to me what is the difference silicon is to silica/Silicon dioxide. However it is interesting what earthlings make with Silicon dioxide... *Glass/ceramics / Portland cement/ thermal protection fabric We see very little glass on this moon(Urns are the exception). What we do see of local production is water produced in the domes which many have assumed are some sort of atmosphere generator. I am just noting that there seems to be very little of natural resources on this moon used by the Engineers or any other race of being. Even with all of the tunnels mined out no natural resource is shown to be utilized. Strange. And even the water has been shown to the viewer why or even it's use. As humans we understand water's importantce to humans but not to the Engineer culture. In fact after the Last Engineer starts to move around he didn;t even ask for glass of water...or even where to find the nearest bathroom. Was it an Austin Powers movie that after a long sleep he visited the men's room for a looooong time? So the water's use still has not been explained. It just seems to me that a moon having silica storms that this site would have been selected for natural resources and for good reason. *

There's a simpler explanation. Silicon dioxide is, pretty much, the most common substance in the Earth's crust. Just about any rock that's just a 'rock', as opposed to some fancy mineral, is silicon dioxide. So a silicon dioxide storm is one way of saying, sandstorm, which is indeed what we saw.
The whole point of this is lost if you keep it a secret.

Thanks for the explanation . It was some sand storm wasn't it?

The engineer was wearing a suit that probably regulated all his body functions. Also, it is interesting to note that in "Alien" Ash says the facehugger is silicon based not carbon based, making it truly alien in every way possible.

"..enough static electricity in the air to fry their suits.." Since silica is more of an insulater I didn't think it would cause short circuits in the space suits. However the abrasiveness of teh wind driven sand could shred the suits and lead to nasty results. I recall when the Prometheus first entered the atmosphere of the moon the amount of lightning that was displayed. And that could definately fry a suit.

Svanya, the hypothesis that life could be based upon another element has been around a long time.-Nostromo0001 @Nostromo0001; I am well aware of alternative/hypothetical types of biochemistry and the possibility of extraterrestrial life being composed of it. It is why I mentioned Silicon in relation to the facehugger. In any case I was not aware one needed a Doctorat to be able to properly discuss movies online...

Dr Nostromo0001, this is a fanbased site for Science Fiction, not ridicule. I catch you being a smarty pants cutting down someone on this site again and I'll guarantee that you won't be doing it again here. Agreed?

Anunnaki50

I got into trouble once and I wont do it again, when I got into an altercation with someone. He tried to dumb down my archaeological knowledge by talking poo to someone else. I got really angry with him and lashed out which I shouldnt have. But the past is the past and the only way to get 'passed it' is by learning from it.

The Anunnaki were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, mighty men of high reno

In the interest of full disclosure, the person that Anunnaki50 got annoyed with is me. We'll just agree to be skeptical of each other and just give each other a wide berth. Live and let live. I am a bit curious though, why did nostromo001's posts disappear and get replaced by X-s. In particular, did I say anything wrong about silica? About silica and frying suits- actually, Janek says 'static electricity'. Which means accumulated electrical charge, and in order for charge to accumulate, it must not be able to flow. That's why static builds up on insulators, not conductors. Presumably, the amount of charge accumulated in the sandstorm was such that when it could find a path of release- like someone's suit- it would cause quite a bit of thunder.
The whole point of this is lost if you keep it a secret.

HEY, cool it guys please... No one needs to see this airing of dirty laundry out in the open and it's totally disrespectful to Indy John's thread... Have some respect for the OP please.

"..the amount of charge accumulated in the sandstorm was such that when it could find a path of release- like someone's suit- it would cause quite a bit of thunder..." Sort of like a walking capacitor... It reminds me of a scene from 'One Flew over the Coo Coo's Nest. The Jack Nicholson's charactor , after taking electric shock therapy., said to watch out for the nelxt lady he gets involved with: She would light up like a Christmas Tree! Sort of ties into several Prometheus themes
