..and no man needs nothing. There will be various explanations of the meaning from the few lines of movie script. My interest was in when they were spoken. David says this while Prometheus is landing. In my mind that is the perfect time for this expression. It is before our adventure really begins. At this point perhaps David is the only crew member who sort of knows the future in regards to this moon and sort let's the cat out of the bag to anyone really listening. I mean if you are on an inter steller space trip and your robot starts to quote lines from a movie 140 years old an attentive crew member might sort of file that away. My interest is in the timing of the comment and it's importance in the storyline.

It's a great (Lawrence) quote on David's part. But quite straightforward, really: They were flying over a desert (for several hours, apparently) and they had found nothing. The last thing they wanted (or needed) was to find nothing.

Thanks zzplural. You usually can find some hidden meaning in parts of the movie that I am oblivious to. It was the timing that got my attention at the first arrrival. I couldn't help about thinking of 'Dune' with their hidden treaures....or even the Middle east. Looking like a desert on the top but filled with oil underground.

nostromo001 The google search works great if any Prometheus related items are also referenced back to this site. For me this site is canon in terms of Prometheus. Using the search feature is good but you need exact wording..or a broad word that may bring of some threads. I am sure various saying/quotes from LoA movie have been discussed here,,but I couldn't find them. I'll google more but i still don't trust anything said in the imbd message board. I would rather take my lumps here.

I think LoA reference means much more than that. Lawrence lived and fought alongside the Arabs - maybe David did with the SJs as well. That explains why the SJ appeared to know David and why the humans approached the first meeting with an alien life form like they were mum and dad waking up Chuck Jnr for baseball training. And then giving the SJ the "this old geezer wants more life, fucker" line.

Yes, the Lawrence quote is apposite, but David is simply hijacking the phrase for a very specific purpose in this scene, in response to Millburn proclaiming that "Nobody's home." It's used in a different context to that in LoA. I'm sure we've all done something similar. When I told my wife one day "Just deal with it," she knew right away that I was recycling Ripley's castigation of Hudson in Aliens. Wifey is smart like that.

Oh yes, I agree with you absolutely that Lawrence has a great impact on the movie, David especially. But there is always the danger of reading too much into little snippets. In the example cited, the quotation (which David would of course know very well) fits perfectly to the matter at hand, i.e. the apparent desolation at the end of their long journey. That is the matter being discussed by the crew, and David chirpily reminds them that it's not a desirable outcome. Whilst you could imagine that he's adding a deeper meaning to that in terms of his own alienation, that's purely supposition. To my mind, the quote fits well enough without requiring any deeper context. Then again, that's what I choose to believe!

There is nothing in the desert. No man needs nothing. Ie: no man will come looking for anything in the desert. If you didn't want to be found (or wanted to keep something safe) you would keep it where No man would ever come looking.

"..If you didn't want to be found (or wanted to keep something safe) you would keep it where No man would ever come looking.. " I sort of like this thinking as it relates to the movie. The implication to me is that there is a still a hidden trasure not yet discovered. Juggernauts may be treasures to some viewers,,but in the grand scale of things not as important as perhaps other unknown discoveries. Maybe it was just Engineer arrogence that they left a star map for humans to follow not thinking that us mere mortals could ever go to their 'desert' to search for truth.

@Indy John, maybe David has warning the humans not to go seeking the answers that they didn’t need to know, so: "There is nothing in the desert" because he knew that they wouldn’t find what they were looking for in LV-223....“and no man needs nothing,” meaning that the humans already had everything that they needed before, and them trying greedily to seek something more (immortality) that would only bring unnecessary trouble. At the same time reminds me of the biblical metaphor of paradise, where we see that Adam and Eve had everything, but they wanted more and they pay the consequences for it.

Furthermore he tells Shaw at the end: May I ask, What you hope to achieve by going there? It almost seems that David had a premonition of what comes next, as if he knew something...or could be just common sense...because he is a robot and his analysis of the situation seems to be cold and rational. Anyway there is no doubt that the others should pay more attention to Him.

Another question is what are the motivations of David now that he is free? At this point I cannot avoid seeing David as Pinocchio because he cannot understand the emotions and feelings involved in the desire/need of Shaw to meet her maker and get answers...Is there anything he wants to achieve? Become a real boy maybe? or is there something more?

I think at the minimum David will be detailing what he is experiencing on his adventure with Shaw. That will lead to more questions(not unlike earthlings at this site) resulting in further exploring and dealing with Shaw's actions what ever that will be. I see David evolving with a combo of robotic functions but also his place in the Engineer/Creator/? universerse he is discovering. Somehow David knows a bit of this journey(as perhaps Weyland did), But it is in the personal encounters with the beings yet to be met. I am curious as what David's reaction will be when he finds a Weyland logo somewhere in Paradise. And how he explains that to Shaw.
