Why does David say this? It's such a kooky statement. He's more than smart enough to know that hardly anybody wants their parents dead, but he says it anyway. Therefore, he must know that it will either upset or confound Shaw. Bad robot? Amoral robot? Glitchy robot? Sly robot? Whatever he is, I imagine that he is a very disturbed creation.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

Forgive me if it comes off ignorant .. but maybe it was just a revelation about what was fixing to go down with engineer? Still whatever the reason.. yea David is defenitly off..I still wonder a bit if the green goo affected him in anyway... irrelevant I know.. I am still curious

David Bowie said in an article some years ago that " the young destroy the old ", which is true. David 8 could have been observing this phenomena in his machines way, giving away his own intentions at the same time. Remember too that probably the only  biological parent/ child dynamic he's ever seen up close was Weyland and Vickers. All that said, I do think he was capeable of cruelty and this would have been a cruel and confusing thing to lay on Shaw, whom he knew intimately via her dreams.

David needs the behavioral inhibitors that his future model Bishop had Obviously he doesn't have them installed. When he told the woman he was watching her dreams while she was in cryostasis I creeped out. Then he wants to freeze her so that thing could be removed on earth? That did not smell right at all. Something is definitely not right with David. Perhaps the sequel will reveal what is wrong with him.

This phrase from David is by far my favorite of them all! Think 2 minutes about this... Parents who give drugs, alcohol to their own children. Some even having forced sex with their own children (incest), setting very bad examples to their children (stealing, cheeting, cursing, lying, taking bribes etc... Are those behaviours so rare? I don't think so... I remember one of my friend psychologist telling me: screwed up parents make screwed kids, never the opposite... David has been brainwashed from day 1 and feel downright disgusted. He was made that way and cannot escape from his programming but knows damm well he's just a pawn in Weyland's game. He's a victim and long for redemption that only Weyland'd death can bring to him. Now that Weyland is history, he's free... but does he know what to do with it? That is the question. Shabou

From what i have seen androids lack the ability to grow and mature emotionally on their own. It is always their programming that sets the course.

"..Sly robot?.." This is my choice because it would cause additional confusion in Shaw's world, That would make it easier for her to be manipulated in the future.. He already showed his 'fatherly side' when he rescued the head and her from the storm and ask if shwe was alright. Now..as they are going to meet the Last Engineer,,he knew that Weyland would not get want he wanted(immortality),,,but of all the humans availible,,David wanted Shaw to be his partner in the future,,,knowing he needed somebody more human than he was. to deal with the Engineers.

I see David as that abused child, waiting for his master to die so he can set out on his own.....
I should reach the frontier in about 6 weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo....

I think it ties into Freudian psychology (basically a false belief now in a lot of ways, but one David chooses to associate with) + a lot of other psychological elements in the movie, mainly cognition and behaviourism, it reveals that there's a lot more going on in David's head. He wanted Weyland to die, so unlike Shaw he doesn't even try to warn Weyland about the bio-weapons, that the place is full of death, and the true nature of the Engineers. David already knew they were "mortal after all". The Engineers may have also wanted to kill and replace their Elders... David could also be hinting at this with his statement, because he picked up certain cultural clues the crew didn't.

".."Doesn't everyone want their parents dead?" David doesn't say he wants his parnts dead? He doesn't say to Shaw//'Do You want your Parants dead?.. He uses "Everyone" which shows he still evolving into a better robot.. Somehow he views Weyland as a parent.,,that is becoming an obstacle;; When talking to Holloway he asks..How far would you go to attain your goal? By getting human responses from what David feels are important questions he creating the human side of his development.. Perhaps even the Last Engineers' response was also showing David,,how humans view life..and death..with the latter not in the android's makeup.

I know a lot of women like David8, but I really got an uneasy feeling about his character after seeing him onscreen. He strikes me as a sociopath, I would avoid him like the plague if he was ever around me IRL. He understands emotion but can't feel emotion, yeah no that's just not good.

Indy John

MemberOvomorphOct-30-2012 4:09 PM
Yes he understands the words relating to emotions...but not in context... or even experience (in spite of the pre-programming).. I may have read books about flying a plane,,but that doen't mean I am ready to Pilot a 757! Yes he exhibits(since we know more than Shaw) actions that display questionable motives.. Makes for an interesting charactor..right?

No,no,no. That is asking way too much of David to say he is nourishing his human side of developement. To me he is more so like a cold computer analyzing himan emotions. He's creepy. He's like a speeding train without brakes. They most llikely had all kinds of problems with these androids until they decided they had to modify them like bishop

I have to say the statement or feeling about wanting one or both of your parents dead is not that uncommon when a person is a teen and dealing with abusive and/or over controlling parents. But from an android? I question his motivations in saying this as some of the other posters have said. If he had told me he had been watching my dreams that would have beem it. End of any real trust

David is the crux of my misgivings, along with the lack of thought that seems to have gone into this mission. Vickers is hostile to the whole venture, but doesn't want to miss a chance to cut off her father's hopes at the knees. The last thing she desires is for him to live on forever. David seems quite perceptive to have noticed that. I kept wondering who was programming David. He seems hostile, forgiveably, to Holloway, but also very curious about the engineers and where they came from. For a scientist, Holloway is extremely careless, failing to tell anyone else when he sees evidence that his body has been infected by something. And why bring a "crap pilot" sex hound to captain the ship and a misanthropic jerk like Fifield? Then the cavalier manner in which Millburn responds to the Hammerpede. He seems to forget that he's no longer on Earth and assumes that the lifeforms are all benign. Combined, they all spelled doom for the mission. Totally unscientific and stupid. Like the captain in Alien I who overrode Ripley's refusal to allow John Hurt back into the ship.

Another suggestion is that Weyland wants this whole discovery for himself and is willing to kill his daughter and all the scientists to keep it exclusive.

(David's most disturbing conversation, I think, is right before he taints Holloways drink) Robot/android psycology is so interesting. Their brains are not capable of handling lies, even lies of omission. Any shades of deceit, especially resulting in harm to humans is what usually results in the unit becoming unstable, sociopathic. (David's most disturbing conversation, I think, is right before he taints Holloways drink) EXAMPLE: H.A.L. of 2010; Ash of ALIEN; even David were given instructions not to be shared with the crew and the crew became expendable in an effort to keep the information secret! I believe the only reason David didn't have a complete meltdown is because his maker, the one relaying the hidden agendas (Weyland) was present - while H.A.L. and Ash had to act solo with no one to monitor their funtions or answer their endless questions like H.A.L. asked Dr. Chandra

Well it was really ash who over rode ripley°s refusal. If not for ash the alien would not have been on board. I saw it as raw emotions and rember ripley saying if.u were in my position u would do the same meaning she was more rational and thinking clearly I liked the snake scene but it did seem very jurassic parkish. Silly. This is the best they could find to travel on a one trillion dollar scientific expedition?

".. The last thing she desires is for him to live on forever. David seems quite perceptive to have noticed that..." @flataffect.. The Vickers/David relationship is curious... THe first view we have of Vickers she says 'Robe'..through a half open door..as it seems she expected David to be there..like an obedient servant... That all seems like it was prearranged by Vickers,, Others think they are using David,,,but to my mind it is David using the others as has been suggested here..David notices everything..

I chose to not think too much about David saying this.. I really believe he is just making a joke about how we all (humans) have mommy/daddy issues..

MemberOvomorphOct-31-2012 6:27 AM
Still it is curious as to when he speaks of this. Weyland is finally going to meet his the Engineers.. who he may feel are his Parents..Meet his makers so to speak. Maybe his reading of Shaw's dreams..David somehow picked up that Shaw was responsible for her biological parents' death..and could forsee her being responsible for the Last Engineers' demise. This really seems farfetched..

@Svanya - I completely agree with your gut feeling about David8! A Sociopath is what David8 should be likened to! No remorse for any action!

Major Noob

MemberOvomorphOct-31-2012 11:36 PM
I absolutely agree with that statement as well. David is the latest in a long line of fictional sociopaths, and among the greatest. He is easily the equal of any Bond villain for sheer charisma and moral deficit, in fact I've said it before he is borderline Hannibal Lecter ( from the films AND books)  I wrote that he behaves with the same jolly indifference that allows an hydraulic press to crush its operator, and that sums it up for me. The thorough realization of his character alone elevates Prometheus above the majority of science fiction film over the last 30 years.

".. I wrote that he behaves with the same jolly indifference that allows an hydraulic press to crush its operator, .." In thinking of all of the deaths portrayed in the film..David does not show the sightest concern...or even reaction to their passing. The slight exception was when Weyland utters his final words,,,with David sort of responds. 'I Know'... Even for a robot that seems cold,,,
