Figured we'd need a thread to talk about the making of doc so here it is. It is, of course, a great making of that covers everything. Wouldn't expect anything less from Charles de Lauzirika who does all Ridley's films of late. One of the things that really caught my attention was the talk about online forums and the filmakers paying attention to them. Pissed me off that they showed screenshots of AVP Galaxy yet we were left out.

@ Engineering Don't feel left out, we were linked off of Fox's webpage before the movie premiered for "Discuss Prometheus" or something along those lines (Chris would remember exactly). Just got my 3D copy today, won't have time to watch all the extras for a while though.

It's alright Engineering, it's good for them! They've been online for 10 years, Prometheus-Movie.com came online 3 years ago. So, it's well deserved I think. Plus, we went 2 years with the majority of the net thinking we were the official Fox site! Haha We even had Fox's official page (fox.com) linking to us for their Prometheus banner, and we got to work with Fox's marketing team and debut the MedPod 720i Weyland Product ad, following IGN's release of the Prometheus ship itself. So I think we got a fair share of recognition over the course of the film's promotional campaign. :)

I'm in the middle of the Furious Gods documentary and this one at last does finely answer all the questions that everybody has been posing. It is the most facinating explanitory documentary I have yet seen on the making of any of the alien franchise movies such as the one about Aliens. Its also inspiring me to want to learn how to do CGI as I am a conventional visual artist who normally works in acrylic on canvas or ball point pen on canvas or paper. But now I want to learn how to convert my ideas on to a digital context like the art designers in prometheus. It will probably take a few years to learn from what I have heard but maybe someday I will be good enough to have the privilege of working on a Sci Fi movie like this. I already downloaded 3 well known up to date software programs and will be looking for on line video tutoring on you tube or other sources. I have heard there are sites like this one where CGI artists blog and exchange ideas which keeps them up to date on the field. I must admit that if I had not broken the rules and waited until I could someday afford or get access to a 3D blu-ray system then I would not be experiencing this profound inspiration that I am now. So it just goes to show the studios should stop ripping off the public by withholding all of these bonus segments from DVD owners in stead of trying to earn money for hardware companies, which they must be heavily invested in. Ridley was right, the 3D theater experience should be kept special to force viewers off of their couches and go to the movies instead of buying a home theaters and specialized collectors editions in a format that the rest of the middle class cant afford. The studios are cutting off their own heads similar to corporations that outsource their hiring to foreign workers at the expense of local middle class workers. For us die hard film collector geeks who desire to learn everything we can about a life enhancing or inspiring movie like a Ridley Scott Sci Fi film the studios should be simply generating all new collectors editions and anthologies with bonus material in ALL formats!!!!! People shouldn't have to go on line and down load torrents to gain access to material that they would be quite willing to buy from Amazon.com if it was available in DVD HD format.

Chris, from what I've seen of Furious Gods they a) seemed to have had 'nothing but fun' on the shoot and b) it adds more to the whys and whynots of what 'that alien prequel' became i.e. its own film, its own franchise.

The documentary explains why Ridley Scott made Prometheus. It was to answer the question of who was the space jockey, but Prometheus does not answer why the engineers were producing bioweapons or why they made us. It raises more questions but it was never meant to be a solo movie. The sequel or sequels can answer that and more questions raised by Prometheus.

Is it possible for someone to upload this documentary and the 2 different scripts? I really wanna see them but I don't have a blu ray player and the dvd doesn't even have all the deleted scenes on it

nostromo001

MemberOvomorphOct-13-2012 10:23 AM
Imora, I sympathize as there is no legal way to upload it, but it is there. Its totally worth watching if you can find it. I hear people have been known to find it as a torrent but I am not suggesting you do that as that would be illegal to do so!

@nostromo001 Thanks I think I'll wait till it shows up on youtube if it ever does I am just really annoyed that there aren't any features on the dvd they could have at least put all the deleted/alternate scenes on them because not everyone has a blu ray player... Have you read the first draft script? Is that tqhe jon spaiths script? Could you tell me how the main story goes and if there are any major changes? Thanks

I just spent the morning watching Prometheus again followed by the Furious Gods documentary and still am only halfway through that but I just wanted to say that as I watch the Furious Gods, which is the making of Prometheus it is just mind blowing all the incredible artistry and technology that went into this movie. The actors talk about how Ridley works by actually placing them in a physically built environment instead of CGI for example. To Imora, I haven't read Jon Spaith's script but there are interviews with him, with Ridley and with Damon Lindelof all discussing the process of writing the script and working with the visual artists about designing the monsters to designing the space craft or environments. Jon Spaith discusses how he was told from the first that the studio would probably replace him with a known screen writer and to be prepared and he was disappointed but not as much as he would have been without that preparation. Still a lot that he wrote made its way into the movie and all involved played a roll in building this truly remarkable movie. You may be able to see segments of this documentary on You Tube someday but remember its 3:40 hours long!!! I have never seen such a detailed documentary and it really makes you appreciate all of the aspects of this movie. I could not say enough positive things to even break the ice with how incredible and extraordinary a process went into the making of this movie and only when you watch the Furious Gods do you begin to appreciate just how amazing it is.

Having just finished the documentary later in the day I have to say that this documetary itself is amazing. Charlize Theron even expresses how great us geeks are and how incredible it is to be a part of something that effects us so iconically. Jon Spaith talks about how careful he had to be about publically saying something that might give something away, such that any clues like that are actually worth a lot of money. Anybody that is a part of this board simply must see this documentary or else you are missing out of so much. OK I have said enough. Now its time for others to comment.

nostromo001 So them there are answers on the mysteries and everybody has been very much "coached" as to what to say and what not. I still SAy it almost unbelievable that with exception of the engineer speaking there is no extended/ cut scenes for the Orrery - cargo hold - ampule room .......

I RARELY buy movies, but I went out and purchased this Day 1, as soon as my local video store opened. I did not plan on watching Furious Gods or Deleted Scenes until the weekend but curiousity got the best of me and watched everything that same day + the movie twice to get listen to commentaries. Worth every single penny! I only wish we cold've got the steelbook like our friends in the UK. It looks so sweet. Ah well.

I get the sense that Spaihts was a little disgruntled with Lindelof stepping in. It seems a little puzzling to me that they'd tap him for an Alien prequel and then completely change it up on him.

@nostromo001 - Right on! I do like a lot of Spaiht's original concepts also. I hope to see some of his ideas make it into the sequel. It's possible, part of the sequel has been filmed already using some of Spaiht's original script! @Custodian - Yeah, it looks like everyone had a lot of fun making the film and also yes, it did become its own franchise in itself. Which is great. It's really unique, how it runs parallel of it's predecessor franchise, while at the same time starting its own. Very very neat and allows for literally - limitless possibilities for future films. I'm very excited to see what they put into Paradise!

Imora, I have the same situation as yourself, I have already purchased my Blu-Ray 3D/Blue-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy but have no Blu-Ray system nor digital television, yet, unless, I purchase the PlayStation 3. But, I'm investing my money in a Gretsch guitar (I'm a guitarist)

So I am just watching it and it is said that Fifield was not transforming but was going to get the same faith the Engineer's head got. It was going to explode at some point. Interesting then...

Many months later, I still find The Furious Gods a powerful resource for understanding how Prometheus was made - the intentions of the director but of course they did leave out some answers to questions that many people have raised. To me that is OK but I would have liked to see a longer movie as I felt a bit dissatisfied when it was over. That is a universe I would love to spend much more time in. PS, reading my posts above I have to say I have mellowed in my opinions but I certainly was excited back then so that is worth something. Now I have had more time to gain accesss to Jon Spaihts' script as well as Damon Lindelof's and that also helped in understanding the genesis of Prometheus. But to get back to the OP, this is an incredible documentary and I would expect any poster here to have seen it in order to make qualified and valid posts.

The little that I have seen on the 'Furious Gods' scenes have been impressive. On the movie set it is interesting to see then actors/charactors acting, well, human. It did seem like it was more than just another acting job. And that was kind of nice to hear.
