"According to the New York Times, Fox is about to try another tactic to enhance sales of its movies, by offering downloadable UltraViolet copies for sale a full three weeks ahead of their release on Blu-ray / DVD or for video on-demand rental. The first movie to get the treatment will be Ridley Scott's Prometheus later this month, and Fox is pricing the copies at about $15, down from the $20 of previous releases. Other flicks on deck for the early digital sale treatment are Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, The Watch and Ice Age: Continental Drift. Fox is apparently calling the setup Digital HD, or DHD, as it rolls out in 50 different countries all at once, and opted to offer the flicks in high definition instead of issuing cheaper standard def versions to "put its best foot forward"." Yes hmm it would a bit but if the download is just the movie without some extras possibly not in a way. I will be sitting back till something worth getting arises personally but interesting - could be good news! So the Ultraviolet goes on sale on the 17th of September I guess? Interesting stuff! I wonder if it will be exactly the same as the blu ray or not? Not sure how many people will be doing ultraviolet stuff :S ...

I don't think i'll bother downloading it. I doubt it will be an extended cut version and i really want the extra features, deleted scenes etc. That's going to cost around £20. But thanx for the info.

The poster was good though!

FOX really knows how to pull the strings (like any other company). First the artbook, then the news about the 20 min deleted footage, and now this. But I'm not surprised, this is common these days. Take games for example; in the 90's there were usually just one version of a certain game. Today, you can choose between several editions of one game (standard/steelbook/limited collectors edition etc), downloadable content and merchandise. And companies create demands; you can't get this super-cool suit or weapon unless you sign up for an account and download these extras (more $$$) I guess it's all about competition and trying to regain high budget costs and beyond. Hell, I'll probably end up up buying the Blu-ray anyway because it's hard to resist...

Get the blu-ray it comes with a digital copy and if not make your own digital copy. Why spend all that extra money. I agree that this kind of shoots the 10.11.12 campaign in the foot big time if it is related to the release of the BR.

yes, this is tricky. What if the digital downloads lower sales of their blurays? Not many people are going to want two copies are they?

im getting the collectors edition blu ray either way. However, i am a bit interested in this ultraviolet download. I am a hardcore physical media guy (fidelity, reliability, and archival conveniance of streaming/downloadable media doesnt touch physical media imo) so i havent kept up with the whole ultraviolet download thing. what type of file do you download? i assume you can only watch it on your computer?

It will be DRM protected that's for sure. The bit-rate will be less also to make it a manageable download. Don't forget the bit-rate of a Blu-ray is huge
