I just finished seeing Alien last night for about the 50th time. I do think that there could be questions answered about Prometheous if you paid good attention at Alien. One question about Alien has always bugged me. We know that the Nostromo was transporting ore back to earth. But from where? This planet or planetoid were the ore is mined has to be father from earth then LV-426. Remember the ship was deviated from the original destination which was earth to LV-426.  Maybe the ore they were transporting came from LV-223. This is just me throwing a question out there. But maybe after what took place on LV-223. The Weyland-Yutani group sent another team of explorers out to investigate what happened on LV-223, and landed on the other side of the planet. They told the Weyland-Yutani heads that the only thing they found was ore. So they then the company decided to make LV-223 a mining facility. Thats just my guess.

Interesting point... it's a question without any true answer... but one everyone will jump on and declare themselves the winner... you just wait... the fun will begin shortly... thanks for posting such a great question.

If you listen to the part where Ripley starts calling the "traffic control" she says that the Nostromo is coming out from a place called "The Solomons". I have always believed this to be some sort of mining colony. However it could also be Nostromo is registered in the Solomon Islands similar as seafaring vessels are today. I do however prefer my first theory. Unknown however in which system or around what star this colony is.

Here's an interesting link on the subject: http://alienexplorations.blogspot.se/2010/02/houston-replaced-by-solomons.html

From the AVP wiki: Thedus is a planet outside the Outer Veil regions rich with natural resources. The Weyland-Yutani corporation mined Thedus extensively throughout the twenty-second century and it was on its return from Thedus that the Weyland-Yutani commercial hauler USCSS Nostromo discovered The Derelict on Acheron LV-426.

Thanks. Knowing how Ridley is. He expects everyone to concentrate on the Prometheuos film to get all there answers. Maybe the answers have been right in front of our faces for the last thirty years. Another thing that Ash say in Alien caught my ear. When they get the distress signal he tells Dallas that there is one ship. All right one distress signal does not mean that it is coming from a ship. It could be from a base. Or there could even be more then one ship. But Ash only says one ship. The answers to all of our questions lies in the words both Ash and David have used in both films. They are the ones who know everything. They know what the missions are really about. They know so much more then the humans. That is why they both got there heads ripped of there shoulders. They went through the same violence because they know eveything.

...Rubirosa, I told ya they would be flocking in... great job. Source materials and books not part of the actual movie do not count.... LMAO.

Your right about that @Patch. There quite a few people who are disspointed with Prometheous because it does not follow rhe guide rules of all the books and graphic novels that have cone out. Like I have said before. The predators have nothing to do wirh Ridleys personal Alien. For him the predators are inconsequential.

But they had come out of lightspeed in the Zeta-Reticuli system, a system consisting of both stars with gas giants in them and themselves orbited by planetoids that we have seen being explained as LV 223 and LV 426/ Ancheron, with each of those having sister worlds accompanying them. So I would summise that the Nostromo came from mining upon another world closer to the 'known' Galactic Rim of explored worlds and as fisherman often do like in The Perfect Storm they decided to push there luck and venture even further out into unexplored regions, banking on the fact that they would be eventually rewarded for their brazen efforts with rich rewards. Don't forget they had picked up Ash I belive six weeks into their voyage at Thedus starbase colony if I remeber correctly. It may not be called Thedus but it sounds familiar. But, if you back track the Nostromo it seems is being 'played' into the arms of a bigger web of shall we say 'galactic intrigue' with certain characters puppeteering events into motion by the machinations of higher corporate echelons, each vieing for power. So Nostromos course was almost carfully re-routed in some ways as I feel inclined to think President Kennedy's motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas was by those who may have 'caused' his muder to happen. You don't go to him to commit the murder, that would raise to much supicion, instead you bring the President to you, along a pre-planned route where assassins may be lying in wait to kill. Well, by the same token, the Nostromo was cleaverly puppeteered and jockeyed into position (no punn intended) because of what I think may be prior knowledge that has not been written up on as yet but when it is it will expand the mythology of the franchise and perhaps further deepen the mystery of it at the same time too.

Like I said before. The truth is in the androids. They are the data banks of all the knowledge of the past when talking about the Xenomorphs and the Engineers. But with rhe creation of the androids to serve man. Our ego has become so great that we forget that the androids in Alien and Prometheous have become like humans. They both display selfish and cunning natures like there creators. I dont think that Weylan had this in mind. He did not expect that his creations might have a devious nature inside of them. It is almost like they have all the anwsers but want to tease the humans. They want to make them suffer just like they have suffered under human dictatorship.

Remember the ship was deviated from the original destination which was earth to LV-426. Maybe the ore they were transporting came from LV-223. I think you've missed out some details about where things are in relation to Earth. In the first movie they tell us where LV 426 is. And it's 39 light years from Earth. In Prometheus, they tell us the distance travelled by the ship, as 327 Trillion kilometres. That's about 34.5 light years, so it's 4.5 light years closer to Earth. It wouldn't make sense to be passing LV 426 on the way home, as it's in the opposite direction. I think the reason that the distance travelled by Prometheus was given in such an odd format (3.27 x 10 ^ 14 KM) is to make this less obvious, most people wouldn't work it out even if they did notice the text on screen.

They were returning from the Thedus Mining Colony

Thats a good one @HadleysHope. But this is why this franchise is great. It makes us think and speculate about the past history of the Alien franchise and its origin.

Taken from Xenopedia. "The USCSS Nostromo was a Weyland-Yutani Lockmart CM 88B Bison M-Class starfreighter used as a commercial hauler between Thedus and Earth. The Nostromo carried (or rather pulled) a massive refinery behind it for processing over 20 million raw tons of ore on the long trip to Earth. This refinery is never actually inhabited, as even the Xenomorph remained on the Nostromo itself. In effect, the Nostromo was more of a tug or a tractor truck rather than a freighter." Also mentioned in the theatrical release of Alien, when Ripley corners Dallas in the corridors asking why Dallas was giving Ash so much leeway.

djrees56 that is amazing, looks either in a dockyard or at the refinery. That is pure gold. Do you have a larger image (I'm thinking wallpaper for the TV/Monitor at home).

During there trip out and back again they may have been taking a sweeping arc approach back into the 'interior' of the galaxy and ultimately home to Earth. Along this route the Zeta Reticuli system lay perhaps relatively directly in their path relative to their sweeping trajectory. As gravity assist helped both the Voyager missions into near brushing contact with the gas giants gravitational field and they would not then be able to be flung on to the next encounter with that of Saturn then Uranus then Neptune. Its possible that the orbits of Zeta's 1 & 2 and coincidentally the Nostromos parabolic flight path brought it relatively in 'direct contact' with the general vicinity of the LV 426 planetary system. It's interesting to theroize whetther the LV system has other planets within it. We know of LV's gas giant parent planet that's like Saturn and it's own planetary family of moons worlds orbiting around it but what if there were other worlds closer in to the parent star of Zeta 1 and icy worlds, ice giants maybe further out as is the case with our's? The same can be said for Zeta 2, how many other planetary bodies does that star system itself have? Makes you wonder?

During there trip out and back again they may have been taking a sweeping arc approach back into the 'interior' of the galaxy and ultimately home to Earth. I like the thinking outside the box, but the physics doesn't work out. They're already travelling faster than light. If you think about the mechanics of a gravity assist, they tiny boost they would get from a star slingshot would not make up for the time they lose getting to it. Voyager was travelling much slower than light, so the maths worked out well for the gravity assists.
