I haven't come across a movie that made me wonder more than get answers so far. I have been thinking a good amount on the movie and have come up with a possible reason for why the engineers are out to exterminate us. If anyone knows of info contradictory to debunk my theory feel free to contribute. The one given thing I am assuming is that the black goo is a form of advanced bio-engineering agents (and the general consensus is that most people agree). The engineers also terraform planets and seed/create life with this. Over time, one one planet this evolved into humans. Perhaps at first they nurtured their creation, trying to explain where they came from. Perhaps, through many, many years humanity evolved and the black goo's effect on humanity also changed. This is hinted in an interview with Lindelof regarding what changed between the cave painting time and modern day. This unexpected mutation of humans creates a formula where the black goo human + another human = the trilobite. This was unintended, this trilobite infects and causes the xenos we know. That is what the engineers in the holograms were running from, xenos, and they are returning to earth to perhaps stop humans from spreading across the universe or where ever they seeded the black goo and spreading the xenos. I could be wrong but this popped into my head upon contemplating the movie. Edit: I just realized that someone found that screech when they start the hologram of the engineer's running matches the screech of the deacon alien at the end. This confirms my suspicion that that is what they are running from. I am really liking my theory that the engineers created us, and we are now the link that is creating the xenos, and they are going back to wipe us out since they made us and the we can cause the xenos. That is why the first engineer is kind of compassionate at first, we made you look at how far you have come, but this is how it has to be. The only thing I can't figure out is this seems to go against Scott's idea that the said multiple times that these ships were specifically used as carriers to deploy the eggs to clean up planets. So I enjoy my theory but it doesn't look like it is holding up.

I agree with you on a general basis, however not so much the end part. The trilobite was a messed up combination of black goo and human sperm through Holloway and Shaw, that made the trilobite a one-off thing. With the engineers I severely doubt that it was trilobites that attacked them causing xeno's to appear. Where would all the trilobites attacking them come from? There's only the one and it infected one engineer.

Also, the new xeno thing at the end of the film was a pretty messed up scenario too if you break it down and is kinda hard to create. Black Goo x Holloway + Shaw = Trilobite + Engineer = New Alien How would there be other trilobites on the planet, there was no humans.

Engineer: I agree. It wasn't a trilobite that killed the other SJs

I think that at first the humans may have been invited to see what the rest of the universe involved, hence the paintings showing the locations in the stars. Perhaps they were offered this opportunity with the engineers being unaware of what the humans could mutate into. These are brought back and unintentionally release generate xenos which, the current engineers we see in Prometheus are fighting, and working to wipe them out. The military base is to destroy us because we are the breeding base for the xeno.

I think more trilobites are possible, e.g., the engineers could have easily abducted a human to conduct experiments.

It was probably the result of what happens when the goo infected an engineer that made them poo and run, then again in the beginning of time sequence the engineer swigs a clump of it... :/ Wow, this film has so many puzzling concepts.

@spektacooler Lol, that would support the 1961 Zeta Reticuli Betty and Barney Hill abduction theory.

I like Citadel535's take - it is a very different explanation than the ones that I've read or thought about...

@Citadel535 Hmm, I dont think they were invited that was the point, its implied by Shaw - 'We were so wrong', that it was no invitation at all and I mean look at the plans, they were coming to earth to destroy us, its not something you kind of announce to the victims. I suppose yeh it might have been an invitation to test the goo works, but im sure they probably knew the effects would be bad anyway.

@Engineer - Chrls :-) yes, that was the intent. it also provides a different explanation for the pictograms - the pictograms are a travel advertisement of sorts to recruit willing abductees :-) (i'm kidding of course - i really don't think the pictograpms are travel ads)

i'm pretty sure it was either the crucifying of jesus (who may have been an engineer) or the rise of christianity, organized religion, monotheism or whatever else you'd like to call it. the engineers wanted to extinguish those human beliefs and cease us coming off the rails any further.

@Engineer-Chr1s Except that the black goo clearly reacts with the DNA of the hosts it infects and as you said yourself the black goo combined with the sperm of a human and then Shaw created the trilobite. And there were no humans on LV-223 at the time the engineers were wiped out, but the trilobite didn't need humans to be created, it needed human DNA. And as they said in the movie, the DNA of the engineers is a match with the DNA of humans. Therefore the trilobite still could have been created by combining with the DNA of engineer, which it would read identically as the DNA of a human.

@spektacooler tbh they could be lol As kind of odd it seems, it could be possible. I mean at what point of intervention did humanity encounter the engineers? All we know is that they were the origin point for all life, it is not confirmed, though entirely plausible they educated us etc, (probably all the dead cities like atlantis and such). Also the constellation points to lv-223 their military science base, not their homeworld. So in a way yeh it could be a travel add for goo infection

@jrock the jesus angle was considered but was eventually dropped - i read that in one of the interviews. they might have replaced that with a more generic "organized religion" plot, but my guess is that they have come up with a completely different reason.

@discgolfer123 Aahh I see your point, but it wouldnt be a proper trilobite would it would be something else entirely, an engineer trilobite maybe. It would probably have the same function but not might not look the same, as it would have the primary dosage of engineer dna, were as humans is a mix of engineer and water and the circumstances in which the trilobite in the film came into being was more compilcated.

Having seen the movie i am not sure.... But before i speculated it being like this... Imagine in the future Mankind created a hybrid Human and Ape and it resulted in Planet of the Apes kind of beings, we placed them on a Planet somewhere out in another system and left clues of where we came from, and liked how they then worshiped us... Fast forwards and somewhere down the line we stop visiting them... maybe because back on Earth we end up destroying all of mankind bar a handfull...... Imagine if then there are only a few of Mankind left and we have many secrets and advancements in Technology and Bio Forming... How would we feel if that after thousands of years after a apocalyptic event on Earth, these Ape beings manage to advance to a level they come to Earth. With only a few of us left, and many of them, the remaining humans would know that our creations would now pose a threat and that they are not only comming to find out who created them but also want to optain the technology that we used to create them... We would then maybe think its time to wipe out our creation, or risk them taking it from us and then seeing our race die off and our power go to our creations.... Thats what i thought... but that may not be the case...

It seems to me that the reasoning for our extermination is that somehow we have failed as a species. Perhaps it could be our history of warfare and so forth. This storyline reminds me of the Star Trek next gen theme where Q is judging the human race. This is consistent with the Space Jesus idea. I find that intriguing and that would roughly fit in the 2000 year time frame that is proposed. Can anyone think of any other significant events that occurred at that time?

The murder of Caesar, the beginning of the slow downfall of Rome, the splintering of the Chinese empire, the burning of the library at Alexandria, all happened within a few centuries there. I'm not sure we know what the Mayans or whoever preceded them were up to, but it probably wasn't good. Rome was probably the last place the old Sumerian gods (who were really engineers) were still worshiped, and it certainly wasn't as religious a place as it used to be. I guess those things could have played a factor, but it seems childish. I still have a hard time buying the death of Christ had anything to do with it. Hardly anyone on the planet even knew who he was until centuries later when Christianity finally spread to Europe, and it doesn't make sense that he would have been an engineer, unless he was a splinter figure himself. He pretty much stamped out all remnants of the old rituals and beliefs in Judaism that still incorporated Sumerian traditions. Why would an engineer do that? If anything, he would revive it and teach them that monotheism was wrong.
