I've read many of the "professional" reviews about the film and I am happy that even the GOOD reviews which rate the film an A or 4-5/5 mention how underwhelming an extremely tentative the plot is. For once I agree with reviewers. That was, and continues to be, my only complaint. It's a beautiful looking film with intriguing characters and great ideas but it lacks the intellectual guts to complete itself while answering some of its most provocative questions.

If the plot seems so shallow to you, maybe it's because you are not looking deep enough.

While I believe critics almost automatically give sci-fi movies 1-star, they typically know what they're talking about. Don't honestly remember what Predator got, but that was no way a 1-star film (Predator 2 is another story); neither was Terminator. I simply believe so many questions remain because they're meant to draw you in to Prometheus II.

I agree and lets not forget... Alien got many bad reviews as well. It took people years to appreciate the movie Alien had to offer. I feel Prometheus will do the same on a larger scale. Another thing I believe: Ridley Scott and the writer(s) for Prometheus are reading our posts and debates and high-five'ing each other. This is exactly what they wanted Prometheus to do- stimulate theories and debate.

@ dsjohnson84 "It's a beautiful looking film with intriguing characters and great ideas but it lacks the intellectual guts to complete itself while answering some of its most provocative questions." The problem with that is that we don't have yet answers for the "big" questions the movie supposedly wants to deal with. We've had these questions for quite a long time now, and there may not be a way of answering them to begin with anyway (at least in their present form and with our current understanding). The moment you come up with an answer, you join the ranks of religion or myth (same to me), and then its just another fantastic story. Now, if you leave things open, you are being honest about this, heck, you might entertain and stimulate tinkling for some people along the way...

it's a crap movie please...stop with the "you aren't looking deep enough" horseshit please The IMDB rating is plummeting fast...from 8.5 to now something like 7.8, and falling For every positive review there is one negative review giving this movie 1 star out of ten, and with good reason I prefer Alien 3

@thefall O.K. Now please show us all the screenplay you wrote and the film you made that is better thus giving you any credibility what so ever to make that call !!! Oh wait, you mean you have None, guess that pretty much disqualifies everything you just said... SORRY !!!

@thefall I see you joined here on 06-05-2012 7:10 AM That's June 5th, the day before this film premiered in North America, I'd say that says it all !!!

@Spartacus using that logic then anyone who has not written a screenplay and complained about the story in Battlefield Earth or the Love Guru also has no credibility and should not be allowed to complain about those films. I understand that you loved the film and that is cool but you should not get so upset by the detractors as to lower yourself to low blows.

Damon did this with Lost--I hung in for several seasons thinking all of this must mean something really deep--only to be incredibly disappointed with the series finale. I'm hoping this doesn't happen with the sequel of Prometheus.

@bardolatress Exactly! Lost didn't tell us anything really.

Regarding the "you're not looking deep enough" comment, it's the new form of intellectualizing over nothing creating a self fulfilling mystery based on presumed/hypothesized ideas. It's akin to the concept of psychological horror - not what you saw but what you THINK you saw. So with Damon it's the same idea. We theorize not on what actually transpired but what we THINK transpired. Whatever keeps discussion going and feeding into larger mysteries which are largely community created.

@Drakeequation He has 33 posts each one of them with foul language made in another thread where someone said something positive about the film, sorry but in this case you just cannot do that. There is a place as well for Negative reviews of the film, a special section, they are not to be made in threads discussing other topics including funny or positive things about the film.

"you're not looking deep enough" hahahaha Maybe you are not being objective enough? The trailers got about as "deep" as the actual movie did. Really... in regards to the plot, we gained nothing more profound than what we already were given in the form of tantalizing assumptions that were provided to us in the promotional trailers. People enjoy ambiguity, but this plot was providing only just that as it was too tentative to remotely resolve any of it's big questions. The writers forgot that you CAN resolve major plot points without closing the door on them entirely. There is a more sophisticated way of being ambiguous outside of simply just posing provocative questions. But then again... all will be addressed in Prometheus 2, right?

I only joined this forum yesterday as I deliberately kept myself spoiler free before going into the cinema. I do however have a good knowledge of the alien universe and always liked Ridley saying in the Alien commentary that he wished he'd hinted at the the possibility the Aliens were nothing more than a bio-weapon. There are going to be lovers and haters of this film and I do think over time that Prometheus will be considered a landmark film. Many people had expectations - possibly influenced by spoilers and speculation before the film came out. I did expect the film to be scarier than it was - then again, I haven't found a film that has scared me in a long time - possibly the original Elm Street back when I saw it at the cinema. I guess I've built up a resilience to horror films unfortunately, yet this film wasn't scary to me at all. That said, I totally enjoyed the ride and the discussions raised by this movie. Not since perhaps Mr. Nobody have I pondered the themes raised in a film.

We have to remember that Lindelof wrote the script, and he always rights in a way that makes you want to wait for the next installment. Take Lost as the prime example. Each episode opened up more questions than there were answers. He wrote like this to keep the viewers watching week in - week out. It's all about the universal story than the one of episode or part of a trilogy which this is. Prometheus has been written in a way to show us just a glimpse into the universe of how and why xenomorphs came into existence. Prometheus II & III will expand upon the other questions we have had from the Aliens franchise and also create some new questions from other subject matter they add to create this trilogy a franchise of its own. Lindelof is the perfect writer when it comes to marketing. The marketers don't have to do as much work to get you interested in the next installment because Lindelof has already gotten you sucked in with wanting to know answers to every growing questions. In a way he is making us do the marketing for him. Because we have so many questions about the movie, we are creating a viral effect. All these new forums and websites keep popping up about the movie and what it all means, keeping more and more people discussing it. Just like in the finale of Lost, the story was never completely answered. There are so many questions left unanswered. But the main message was answered. So we are left wondering what, how, why, etc. This is so that we will continue to question the storyline for years to come. Just like with Lost, I believe that Prometheus will be talked about for years to come even after the 3rd movie is complete.
