After all the criticisms being leveled at Prometheus, and also if we follow the pattern of the 'Alien' franchise, could the sequel benefit from another visionary director? Like a Guillermo Del Toro, etc. , etc. What do you guys think? Maybe they could clear up the plot holes and really take things to the next level...

I'll hope that there's not the director of Alien 3. If there is a other i'll choose James carmon.

@Chr1s, The only reason I pose this is because how reasonable is it to assume that Ridely will do more than produce and oversee Part 2, because he has so many other things on his upcoming slate. Maybe, they'll now allow Carl Rinsch to direct it, now that he's got '47 Ronin' under his belt...

@The Lone Gunwoman, I'd love to see what David Cronenberg would do, but as the Hollywood machine is all about the money, if they can't entice Ridley back, they'll go for some other, blockbuster-type director... Maybe Andrew Stanton could do good coming off the back of John Carter? ( Actually, that choice would negate my whole notion of choosing someone for their dollar value - but leaving JC aside, Stanton has a great track record... )

Stanton has a very BIG negative balance in his SciFi account right now as far as the Studios are concerned. He'll be fine if he goes back to Emeryville. I could totally get into an Engineer Homeworld done by either Del Toro or David Fincher. He's a good director. A3 three was just an utter KlvsterPhvck all around. I don't think it was totally his fault. BUT, this is what I want to believe. I want to believe that there are two more films that Ridley genuinely wants to make. 1. A revisiting of Blade Runner (on his own terms) 2. The revealing of the truths/realities behind the Engineers I believe that these are territories that are truly interesting to him personally. I think (hope, dream) that #2 above might be a film like Blade Runner, that is NOT necessarily a commercial success at the time of its release, because there is MORE THERE than a commercial audience would/could appreciate in its own timeframe. BUT, in order to get 100million+ to make it with his very lofty, discriminating stylistic requirements, I think he needs a commercial success again in that 'universe' under his belt to pay for it. And, I also hope, with every finger that crossable crossed, that Prometheus will do that for him.

Other possible choices... - David Lynch Like most of his movies, but dont know if this man would/could fit to alien universe.. i think for lynch WHOLE REAL LIFE is a plain DREAM... LSD head - Cronenberg Hmm.. he had his best times.. loved NAKED LUNCH... but thats some years ago. - James Cameron Must say - Aliens was a REAL masterpiece. Perfect timing, perfect screenplay. Ok, much armee blah but it was REALLY fantastic. Cant imagine doing anything better on Aliens. Still love it after all these years.. - Steven Spielberg Oh, just kidding! Spielberg could be hired by DISNEY ... cant remember any good film by spielberg.. AI was .. hmm dont know... to childish? Super8 was really CRAP. Crap that you forget an hour after leaving the cinema. - David Finsher No.. had his chance on Aliens3. WAs not tooo bad... but dont know why the movie was THAT SERIOUS. And the idea with prison planet was not special at all, dont know what he wanted to tell us with that movie...

...by the way.. i simply dont know if i can trust RIDLEY SCOTT.... he is getting old. Sure, brilliant man, but that was some years ago, and i saw him beeing brilliant just in TWO (2) movies - alien and bladerunner. The rest is more or less CRAP! He did so many things that simply can not be forgiven - G.I. Jane - Jesus Christ, how sick must he have been doing such a crap.. - Working with russel crowe for so long time - robin hood .. ROBIN HOOD! ARRGHH!! - Gladiator - oh how i hate this boring movie. You have seen BenHur? THATS a movie!

HAS to be Ridley to ensure the continuity of mood. Otherwise Christopher Nolan. After The Dark Knight/Inception he can be relied on to twist the idea and push it where others cant imagine. David Lynch had his foray into sci/fi with Dune. He wont get burnt again.

Yo, "should have to be ridley"... but... BUT.... should i wait another 2 years to have another "lindelof shit-crap-script" right before my eyes? When watching "LOST" sometimes i allways thought ".. oh what an a..hole to make you curious without EVER EVER EVER giving you some answer.. just EMPTY BLAH.... Lindelof was my biggest fear according to prometheus - and i CAN believe my feelings, unfortunatelly!

Cunningham would likely make something that I would LOVE, but it would never make enough money to justify its own existence and he's young enough that that would be really bad for his career. All is Full of Love is utterly brilliant as is Windowlicker. Come to Daddy is also noteworthy.

@Kirill, The question isn't dumb, as the imaginative choices by the previous commentors demonstrate. As Ridley and other big directors rarely sequelize their own works, it's reasonable to assume another director may take over the next installment.

I propose the candidacy of David Lynch! I am confident that he will be able to create the most gloomy atmosphere of an alien point of absurdity and horror. Especially as he needs to be rehabilitated after the "Dune". Since the film has not turned out not his fault, but because of Dino De Laurentiis stupidity. Of course, if the artist will be painting the HR Giger, and Angelo Badalamenti wrote the music. just imagine!

Of course, David Lynch. He will make the sequel so confusing and bizarre, nobody will be able to criticize it, and it will turn out everything in part one was just a weird dreeeeeeeeam, of Ripley in hyperspaaaaaace, and when she wakes up the statue of Lincoln turns out to be a SPEEZ JOCKURY, then everybody will stand up and sing the nation anthem in honor of Michael FACEBENDER

Oh i am NOT sure if cunningham cares that much on career. He is genius, and does what he wants to do. He does have the vision - and he has the expirience and is able to do it, he was proved in SO MANY little video, and each of them is ORIGINAL and BREATHTAKING. You have NEVER seen something like that before - thats fact. And it is not "only" fresh and never-seen, it really TOUCHS you somewhere in your brain where you would not expect. Movies from the LSD generation... are "different", as reality is "different" from that what we THINK is reality.

I think realistically, we may have to discount the BIG directors such as Cameron, Lynch, Cronenberg, Aronofsky, Fincher, etc. as they would unlikely ( at this stage in their own careers ) sequelize someone else's work ( even if it's Ridley Scott's ). We may be looking at up-and coming directors, or directors who are out there that have shown great potential.

Duncan Jones - YES!!! Love thast idea too - A brilliantly imaginative director who could break through onto the blockbuster stage with the right project. I think a Prometheus sequel would give him the chance to excel and at the same time take the inventive leap that perhaps Prometheus lacked. Great choice Slipp_Digby!
