Pessimistic Preparations

Let me put in a little backstory to my fears. I'm 20, I saw Alien for the first time when I was 11 and fell in love. Since then I've been unable to convince people that one film has remained as my absolute favorite for so long and from such a young age. I try to describe it by saying everyone has a movie that just 'clicks' with them, and for me it was Alien. I'm obvsiouly a huge film-buff as well and usually have no qualms about spoilers, early-reviews, over-exposing trailers until this movie came along. Prometheus is giving me anxiety. All I can think about is "oh god, what if it's awful". This started when I was with some friends who were talking about Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The trailer looked awesome, same director, everyone was hyped and convinced it wouldn't suck, those poor people. I hold Ridley in a higher regard above Mr. Lucas to start, but the parallel is still there. So i'm trying to prepare myself for the absolute worst case scenario. The American release is on my birthday (some cosmic hilarity I think) which isn't helping the scenario. Does anyone else share my fears? Because i'm horrifically afraid of a Phantom Menace scenario. Plus the push for a Blade Runner sequel is setting off an alarm in my brain. What if this is a cash in instead of Ridley trying to redeem a once great franchise? This is seriously making me paranoid to the extent that i'm going to have to laser off my Alien tattoo in shame and depression. Any opinions on the matter? (well, at least it can't be as awful as the AVP's. Right?)

I, as you, have been a fan of Alien since the age of 11. I'm 21 now, and through-out my years of middle and high school and now in college, Alien still remains my all time favorite film. My mom made me watch some crazy stuff when I was younger... and I'm glad she did! There was something about Alien that made it "click" with me, as you said. Maybe it's the originality of the Alien design or the mysteriousness of the whole thing? And with Alien also being my favorite film, I am too getting anxiety from Prometheus :s Every single day I'm on this website looking up news, and coming up with weird theories for everything. I JUST WANT THE FILM TO BE RELEASED ALREADY!!! But what is really irking me is the point that you made right there. Another Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? At first, I kind of enjoyed Episode One...when I was younger! Now I watch it and understand the flaccidity of it -.- First of all, if it was a cash grab, Fox would of definitely forced this to be a PG-13 film. And even if then, I highly doubt Ridley would of even been up to making the film. I really do believe that Ridley and even Fox want to make this something really really special. I'm sure it will be! So do not fret my friend, for you will have the greatest birthday any man can ask for.

Rosesrubella......I totally share your feelings........ although I didn't hate EPISODE I as much as other star wars fans do, actually for me episode 2 is the weakest of the prequel trilogy......... but anyway I think what happens is that we all want to see this movie NOW.........I'm telling myself no to come back to these forums and lurk in you tube but it is impossible......... I think I passed the point of no return; we can't go back and pretend I haven't seen anything besides the teaser trailer....... But like Hi Big Pig says.........just relax and enjoy.........I mean I still watch SPECIES and AVP if they pop out on TV as other guilty pleasures........... my personal tip would be listen to the soundtrack..........It'll get you all hyped in a good way.

I think you are asking the wrong question. Remember, Prometheus IS JUST A FILM, and good or bad, life will go on as usual after you watch it. You will still have breakfast the next day, you will kiss your wife/kids goodbye in the morning and head off to some mind numbing work, where you will trade your time for money, only to repeat the cycle again the next day. ThIs is a Ridley piece of work - it will have great visuals, good acting, a solid storyline and you will talk about the film with your colleagues around the water cooler the next day. Expect that and nothing else, and you might be pleasantly surprised. What we should all be asking is why is it that we allow Fox marketing, or any company for that matter, to condition us to be consumer robots, monetizing our time and inclining us to spend hours on trivial activities like decoding trailer screenshots. Should we not better spend that time doing other meaningful & impactful things like taking the dog for an extra walk to the park, playing ball with your son, or learning a new hobby ? The question you really should be asking is - why am i letting a mere film impact my life so much ?
So i'm trying to prepare myself for the absolute worst case scenario.
I am taking the opposite approach and having complete faith in Ridley Scott because I do not see even one good reason not to! besides we already now what this film is all about Ridley Told us in NO Uncertain terms what he intends to do with it...and I for one am really looking forward to discussing EXACTLY what it's message was to all of us the very day after we see it !!!

@Rosesrubella: ALIEN is one of the few films that really clicked with me as well. it's on my personal "best films" list i do feel a pang of fear that the end result, (not the journey getting there) will be somewhat not what i was hoping for. i have seen far too many things i wish i had not seen in the trailers Fox has released in the past few months at the same time, i have put my true cinematic faith in Scott, and his great sense of storytelling and fantastical directing style fingers croxxed, PROMETHEUS will far exceed what i thought i was going to see and experience time will tell....

The "Binks" fiasco IMO is way worse than the Lukas and Spielberg Raped Ford/Jones fiasco making it for me, twice the concern !!!!! & I still want every trace of that character erased completely. After the fact. Now.

Me too, and at the time I thought they might get in trouble for going too far but I think they asked Spielberg for permission to do it and told them both before hand!!!

I have definitely been a bit worried that "Prometheus" could be the "Phantom Menace" all over again....But I take some comfort in that Ridley has been directing great movies since he did "Alien"....he's been honing his directorial skills for years and has a proven track record: Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down... all great movies. His last few I haven't cared for too much.... but they weren't terrible. Lucas hadn't Directed since Star Wars when he did Phantom Menace, and it showed. I'm sure RS knows he needs to knock this one out of the park... He needs a big hit.

Why are we wasting our lives on a movie you, because Ridley Scott is not just your average director and the ALIEN/PROMETHEUS concept is not your run of the mill story and films. I have a family, job, hobby, and pet. But the positive energy generated by the knowledge of this project being green lit added that extra pep in my life. It pretty felt like someone reuniting me with a good old friend. We're just hoping our friend doesn't turn out to be a crazed, incoherent crackhead, out to rob us and leave us for dead. ijs lol =))

Go in and forget everything that you've seen to the best of your ability. Don't go with any expectations other than to have a good time. Don't go in with a checklist of things you're expecting to see. If you're not having fun, being scared, or engaging your mind, then the movie has failed to some degree.

I echo what others have been saying here: Let go of your expectations, let Prometheus be a blank slate, enjoy the ride, and don't overthink it. BTW, you guys are a bunch of young'uns! I'm 34, married, with one child and another on the way. That makes it, let's see now, 23 years since I first saw Alien! (Holy cow.) While I can't say that it's my favorite movie of all time, it IS my favorite movie in the horror/sci-fi genre, which is one of my favorite genres, so there you go. I could never get very excited about Cameron's Aliens or the other sequels, so I'm thrilled that Ridley Scott has come back to offer us something new from the Alien universe. Now would be a good time to watch the original Alien again, not just for old time's sake, but also to remind yourself that it's not perfect.

@Rosesrubella - Poison Idea had a great tune called "Getting The Fear", which tied into the Charles Manson cult mentality - but questions the same things: am I going to be let down or be a part of this? Horrible analogy at this point, but enjoy the flick ("Prometheus") for what it is. You can't recapture the moment of impact when something like "Alien" hits you broadside, makes an impression, and you hold everything else short of what you first experienced. My favorite film of all time is "Throne Of Blood" by Akira Kurosawa - but I came across that long after seeing "The Lower Depths". Nothing until that point compared to "Lower". I skipped on "Phantom" because the trailer looked amazing, but was certain the movie would fall short. I regret this, because watching it years later, I wish I would have had the experience in a theatre on it's release date the way I do now at home. In retrospect, I actually like the movie - but I sincerely think, in this case, we have nothing to be afraid of. There's something Ridley did with this to not only make it worth his while to revisit, but worth ours to do so too.

@abiogenesis - got you beat, Chief - I am 42! Have the same take, man - just enjoy the damn ride. We're too old for this sort of debate! I have two sons, one daughter. She's five. She's going to the flick. So much for parenting skills - learned it from the 'rents who rented "Alien" on VHS when I was 11. Gotta pass the legacy of it, right?

To be honest, I was not happy with Ridley's Hannibal movie and loved Silence of the Lambs. He had upset me with not using Jerry Goldsmith's score in Blade Runner and Legend. BTW, I love Jerry Goldsmith scores and was saddened by his passing. He would have scored this movie lovely. I saw Alien when I was 13 in the movies and that movie has scared me the most to this day. I remember seeing it in the movie theater at the Loew's on 86th street in New York City. I missed the Omen, Exorcist (seeing it in the movie theater) during those years and Scanners somewhat came close afterwards. Aliens was good (funny I served in the Marines from 87 to 91 and now have been in the Army since. I am in Afghanistan currently and pissed that I will miss it seeing it in the movie theater/IMAX/3D) but not the same level as Alien. The movie needed to remain on that horror level. The other films weakened the series so I am hoping for a reprieve with this and wishing that RS brings the standards back to this film. He should.

@Late, Okay, you win! But my husband is your age and we're taking our 20 week old fetus to Prometheus, does that count for anything? (Our 4 year old's way too sensitive for anything scarier than Thomas the Tank Engine, for now.) @colonial soldier, Keep safe, and thank you for your service!
