MemberOvomorphMay-15-2012 2:43 AMYou think perhaps he rapes her?
Myrddin365
MemberFacehuggerMay-14-2012 10:23 PM@Proxy. I agree. I don't think they'd go to all that time and expense just for a shot of him getting out of a coffin/hypersleep chamber.
@Allinamberclad
Thanks for the assist. You're dead on. If a human sees the Engineer "naked" I am damned sure they will wish they hadn't.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 7:26 PMSo don't repost it

MemberFacehuggerMay-14-2012 7:29 PMI'm interested in the why the Engineer is half naked in the movie. I'm giving credit where it is due and referencing the source of my information, so that people will know I'm not making it up.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 7:43 PMSeems to me the suits they wear are the answer.

Being "half naked" from the wardrobe dept.’s point of view may be quite different from the "character" being half naked in the fictional context of the film...
BUT, my guess is s/he comes out of the cryo-cophagous in a similar state of dress as the humans do.
Just guessing here, but based on everything else thematically, her/his clothes are probably also at least partially biotic. They may not be made of cotton. ;•)
Myrddin365
MemberFacehuggerMay-14-2012 7:47 PMYes and no. There are two "suits" The full body space jockey organism suit, and the suit that he's wearing in the chair room. The half naked Engineer was a whole other prosthetics issue.
they also said that the features had to be perfectly symmetrical and appear to made of marble. interesting stuff.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

MemberFacehuggerMay-14-2012 7:52 PM@Sukkal
That could, in fact, be the case, I just wonder if the Engineer might find another reason to disrobe.
Shaw doesn't just appear to be afraid when she screams "DIIIEEEE!!!"
Ripley wasn't mad at the Alien, she was just plain scared.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

That might depend largely on whether the Engineer ever speaks or not. The "having a face factor" probably comes into play as well, though.
The legs in the shot where (OK, it's a›››) he approaches her seem to have on the "leggings" still.
I'm just so glad that this is all still a mystery to me.
I want to save Engineer "full frontal" (if that's to come to pass) for the theater. :•)

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 8:03 PMWe've mostly only seen shots of the engineer half naked and "getting dressed". Still none of him fully clothed.
Myrddin365
MemberFacehuggerMay-14-2012 8:08 PM@Shane When he's wearing the ribsuit, but not the Space Jockey suit, it's different than when he's half naked. The guy talks about it being a totally different prosthesis problem.
I just find it fascinating that there is yet another facet of the Engineer's development that has no current context in what we know.
I'm sure there's a lot of stuff like that, but I like that the Engineers are more humanoid than we knew so far.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 8:13 PMTo me a jockey without the suit on is always half naked and just looks like a dorky buff billy corgan or powder.

MemberFacehuggerMay-14-2012 8:17 PM@ Shane
I agree, but there are basically 3 "costumes" for the Engineer, Half naked, ribsuit, space jockey.

I'll be happy to wait and see the distinctions in the film.
Who's to say that the clothes (ribsuit, leggings, crotch cover etc.) don't just "form" on them depending on the scenario?
Oh, I know! Their home world is called Abercrombia.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 8:35 PMI wonder if he is the half naked jockey when standing infront of .....Shit I am forgetting the character name. The one that looks terrified in the trailer with the huge shadow coming towards her.
Either way, lots of interesting stuff there.

Yes i read the article as well. My point about the suits is that the reason it was a whole other prosthetics issue and something that the prosthetics supervisor went over in such detail might have to do with the greater importance of the various suits.
ya feel me?

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 9:08 PM@Shane
Just to help @Myrddin365 out: if you read the article it's pretty clear that O'sullivan is discussing an iteration of the Engineer that is "naked", as opposed to a "suit" that an Engineer also wears - that they describe as intended to be octupus-like and bio-mechanical.
It's difficult to determine what he means to start with because what is "naked"?
Is, "naked", for an Engineer, that blue figure we see attacking Shaw? Or is that actually the "suit"? Is that even an Engineer attacking Shaw?..
"Naked", is a very specific word and I think he means us to understand that the character is the Engineer equivalent of what we would understand as "nude" - that would not be the blue guy in the control room as he seems to be wearing a suit that stops at his neck - (a suit which, I notice, doesn't seem to look exactly like what we see attacking Shaw).
So either "naked", refers to a Blue Guy without that suit, or something else that we would obviously, regardless of it's Species, be able to understand is "nude"....
I'm with @Myrddin365: I interpret this as at least 3 "versions" of Engineer appearance - and God knows what else!
Why was the question: why, he would be naked I have not one clue at all in my brain - but I believe no good will come of it.
I'm certain someone will be wishing he was not naked.

MemberOvomorphMay-15-2012 3:02 AMSomeone has theorized that Shaw was impregnated by Holloway and the fetus was infected turning into squiddy. This is just conjecture, IMO.
Tokyokid
MemberOvomorphMay-15-2012 3:20 AMI think the nude reference is n respect to a body suit that had to be replaced every few days.
Now I am worrying whether we are going to see a Russian doll act with normal sized engineers poppng out of SJ suits and the full sized engineer. Or, we will see a converted crew member grow the engineer suit.
skyguy1054
MemberOvomorphMay-21-2012 10:08 AMI think the whole idea of these suits will be a lot more malevolent. Like, if you suit up in an SJ chair, then maybe that's what you are for the rest of your life, a derelict driver. The suits aren't intended to come off!
